Competition for the urban poor : urban community development (Crossroads) : the complexities of giving and receiving
Bibliography: pages 191-199.Black people in South Africa have been the targets - or victims - of massive development intervention by successive South African governments. And in more recent years urbanised Africans in particular have been the targets of increasing levels of development intervention, much of which has been funded and directed through bilateral aid programmes initiated by western governments. It is with those kinds of development intervention that this thesis is concerned. Research, conducted during 1989 and 1990, examined a slice of development activity occurring in an African urban area during what is becoming a period of transition from South Africa's effective isolation to the beginning of its reincorporation into the world "development system"
Migration and Sustainable Livelihoods: A Critical Review of the Literature
This paper focuses on the links between migration and sustainable livelihoods, looking in particular at the
institutional factors that connect the two. It argues that much of the development literature makes the
false assumption that sedentary patterns in society are the norm, instead making the case that migration is
often the rule, rather than the exception. It concludes that migration should be seen as just one of the
livelihood strategies open to households, that it is often combined with other strategies, and that it is
frequently a two-way process in which migrants maintain close links with their areas of origin over a much
longer period than is frequently assumed. Pointing out the range of different types of migration, ranging
from voluntary to forced, the paper highlights the complex institutional factors involved in determining
who is able to migrate, and who benefits most from it

Media Selection and the Imposter Phenomenon: A Multinational Investigation
Imposterism, where individuals seek to create a false impression that they are more qualified than they actually are, is an emerging area of study, while media selection has been a subject of interest to IS researchers for over 25 years. This study seeks to determine if individuals who score highly on imposterism dif er in their media preference, and if there is a cultural dimension to this relationship. Using a scenario-based experiment administered to 439 subjects in the U.S. and China, we demonstrate relationships between media choice and both imposterism and two dimensions of espoused national culture
Phosphorylation in intrinsically disordered regions regulates the activity of Neurogenin2.
BACKGROUND: Neuronal differentiation is largely under the control of basic Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH) proneural transcription factors that play key roles during development of the embryonic nervous system. In addition to well-characterised regulation of their expression, increasing evidence is emerging for additional post-translational regulation of proneural protein activity. Of particular interest is the bHLH proneural factor Neurogenin2 (Ngn2), which orchestrates progression from neural progenitor to differentiated neuron in several regions of the central nervous system. Previous studies have demonstrated a key role for cell cycle-dependent multi-site phosphorylation of Ngn2 protein at Serine-Proline (SP) sites for regulation of its neuronal differentiation activity, although the potential structural and functional consequences of phosphorylation at different regions of the protein are unclear. RESULTS: Here we characterise the role of phosphorylation of specific regions of Ngn2 on the stability of Ngn2 protein and on its neuronal differentiation activity in vivo in the developing embryo, demonstrating clearly that the location of SP sites is less important than the number of SP sites available for control of Ngn2 activity in vivo. We also provide structural evidence that Ngn2 contains large, intrinsically disordered regions that undergo phosphorylation by cyclin-dependent kinases (cdks). CONCLUSIONS: Phosphorylation of Ngn2 occurs in both the N- and C-terminal regions, either side of the conserved basic Helix-Loop-Helix domain. While these phosphorylation events do not change the intrinsic stability of Ngn2, phosphorylation on multiple sites acts to limit its ability to drive neuronal differentiation in vivo. Phosphorylated regions of Ngn2 are predicted to be intrinsically disordered and cdk-dependent phosphorylation of these intrinsically disordered regions contributes to Ngn2 regulation. This work was

Online Word-Of-Mouth and Mobile Product Reviews:An Experimental Investigation of the Mediating Role of Mobile Self Efficacy
Online word-of-mouth (WOM) has been studied extensively by electronic commerce researchers, particularly in the realm of online product reviews. As mobile computing becomes more and more common, difference in navigation and the ability to foster focus may lead to changes in the way in which consumers read and react to mobile product reviews compared to online reviews. We use research related to mobile computing limitations, Mobile Self Efficacy and information overload to outlines a study in which two common online review outcomes, trust in the review and purchase intention are evaluated in a mobile environment
Low vs high field 1h NMR spectroscopy for the detection of adulteration of cold pressed rapeseed oil with refined oils
Cold pressed rapeseed oil (CPRO) is a relatively recent development in rapeseed processing, which produces a quality product with a high market value. High field NMR (400 MHz) is a well-established tool in food analysis, while low-field NMR (60 MHz) is much less studied. This study aims to establish the effectiveness of both techniques in identifying binary adulteration in CPRO. Three adulteration scenarios were investigated: a) CPRO and refined rapeseed oil (RRO); b) CPRO and refined sunflower oil (RSO); and c) CPRO and RRO or RSO. A range of classification techniques were trialled as well as partial least squares regression to gauge predictive quantification performance. The 400 MHz NMR achieved classification rates of 100% in the scenarios with a single adulterant, and 93% in the multiple adulterant scenario. The 60 MHz NMR produced lower but still encouraging classification rates (RSO 92%; RRO 85%; both RRO and RSO 87%)
