Spacelab energetic ion mass spectrometer
Basic design criteria are given for an ion mass spectrometer for use in studying magnetospheric ion populations. The proposed instrument is composed of an electrostatic analyzer followed by a magnetic spectrometer and simultaneously measures the energy per unit and mass per unit charge of the ion species. An electromagnet is used for momentum analysis to extend the operational energy range over a much wider domain than is possible with the permanent magnets used in previous flights. The energetic ion source regions, ion energization mechanisms, field line tracing, coordinated investigations, and orbit considerations are discussed and operations of the momentum analyzer and of the electrostatic energy analyzer are examined
A measure of majorisation emerging from single-shot statistical mechanics
The use of the von Neumann entropy in formulating the laws of thermodynamics
has recently been challenged. It is associated with the average work whereas
the work guaranteed to be extracted in any single run of an experiment is the
more interesting quantity in general. We show that an expression that
quantifies majorisation determines the optimal guaranteed work. We argue it
should therefore be the central quantity of statistical mechanics, rather than
the von Neumann entropy. In the limit of many identical and independent
subsystems (asymptotic i.i.d) the von Neumann entropy expressions are recovered
but in the non-equilbrium regime the optimal guaranteed work can be radically
different to the optimal average. Moreover our measure of majorisation governs
which evolutions can be realized via thermal interactions, whereas the
nondecrease of the von Neumann entropy is not sufficiently restrictive. Our

Online Convex Optimization Using Predictions
Making use of predictions is a crucial, but under-explored, area of online algorithms. This paper studies a class of online optimization problems where we have external noisy predictions available. We propose a stochastic prediction error model that generalizes prior models in the learning and stochastic control communities, incorporates correlation among prediction errors, and captures the fact that predictions improve as time passes. We prove that achieving sublinear regret and constant competitive ratio for online algorithms requires the use of an unbounded prediction window in adversarial settings, but that under more realistic stochastic prediction error models it is possible to use Averaging Fixed Horizon Control (AFHC) to simultaneously achieve sublinear regret and constant competitive ratio in expectation using only a constant-sized prediction window. Cardiovascular MRI evidence of reduced systolic function and reduced LV mass in rheumatoid arthritis: impact of disease phenotype
The accelerated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) requires further study of the underlying pathophysiology and determination of the at-risk RA phenotype. Our objectives were to describe the cardiac structure and function and arterial stiffness, and association with disease phenotype in patients with established) RA, in comparison to healthy controls, as measured by cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). 76 patients with established RA and no history of CVD/diabetes mellitus were assessed for RA and cardiovascular profile and underwent a non-contrast 3T-CMR, and compared to 26 healthy controls. A univariable analysis and multivariable linear regression model determined associations between baseline variables and CMR-measures. Ten-year cardiovascular risk scores were increased in RA compared with controls. Adjusting for age, sex and traditional cardiovascular risk factors, patients with RA had reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (mean difference − 2.86% (− 5.17, − 0.55) p = 0.016), reduced absolute values of mid systolic strain rate (p < 0.001) and lower late/active diastolic strain rate (p < 0.001) compared to controls. There was evidence of reduced LV mass index (LVMI) (− 4.56 g/m2 (− 8.92, − 0.20), p = 0.041). CMR-measures predominantly associated with traditional cardiovascular risk factors; male sex and systolic blood pressure independently with increasing LVMI. Patients with established RA and no history of CVD have evidence of reduced LV systolic function and LVMI after adjustment for traditional cardiovascular risk factors; the latter suggesting cardiac pathology other than atherosclerosis in RA. Traditional cardiovascular risk factors, rather than RA disease phenotype, appear to be key determinants of subclinical CVD in RA potentially warranting more effective cardiovascular risk reduction programs
Excited states of linear polyenes
We present density matrix renormalisation group calculations of the Pariser-
Parr-Pople-Peierls model of linear polyenes within the adiabatic approximation.
We calculate the vertical and relaxed transition energies, and relaxed
geometries for various excitations on long chains. The triplet (3Bu+) and even-
parity singlet (2Ag+) states have a 2-soliton and 4-soliton form, respectively,
both with large relaxation energies. The dipole-allowed (1Bu-) state forms an
exciton-polaron and has a very small relaxation energy. The relaxed energy of
the 2Ag+ state lies below that of the 1Bu- state. We observe an attraction
between the soliton-antisoliton pairs in the 2Ag+ state. The calculated
excitation energies agree well with the observed values for polyene oligomers;
the agreement with polyacetylene thin films is less good, and we comment on the
possible sources of the discrepencies. The photoinduced absorption is
interpreted. The spin-spin correlation function shows that the unpaired spins
coincide with the geometrical soliton positions. We study the roles of
electron-electron interactions and electron-lattice coupling in determining the
excitation energies and soliton structures. The electronic interactions play
the key role in determining the ground state dimerisation and the excited state

Preconception Brief: Occupational/Environmental Exposures
In the last decade, more than half of U.S. children were born to working mothers and 65% of working men and women were of reproductive age. In 2004 more than 28 million women age 18–44 were employed full time. This implies the need for clinicians to possess an awareness about the impact of work on the health of their patients and their future offspring. Most chemicals in the workplace have not been evaluated for reproductive toxicity, and where exposure limits do exist, they were generally not designed to mitigate reproductive risk. Therefore, many toxicants with unambiguous reproductive and developmental effects are still in regular commercial or therapeutic use and thus present exposure potential to workers. Examples of these include heavy metals, (lead, cadmium), organic solvents (glycol ethers, percholoroethylene), pesticides and herbicides (ethylene dibromide) and sterilants, anesthetic gases and anti-cancer drugs used in healthcare. Surprisingly, many of these reproductive toxicants are well represented in traditional employment sectors of women, such as healthcare and cosmetology. Environmental exposures also figure prominently in evaluating a woman’s health risk and that to a pregnancy. Food and water quality and pesticide and solvent usage are increasingly topics raised by women and men contemplating pregnancy. The microenvironment of a woman, such as her choices of hobbies and leisure time activities also come into play. Caregivers must be aware of their patients’ potential environmental and workplace exposures and weigh any risk of exposure in the context of the time-dependent window of reproductive susceptibility. This will allow informed decision-making about the need for changes in behavior, diet, hobbies or the need for added protections on the job or alternative duty assignment. Examples of such environmental and occupational history elements will be presented together with counseling strategies for the clinician
A novel and practical screening tool for the detection of silent myocardial infarction in patients with type 2 diabetes
Silent myocardial infarction (MI) is a prevalent finding in patients with type 2 diabetes and is associated with significant mortality and morbidity. Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is the most validated technique for detection of silent MI but is time consuming, costly and requires administration of intravenous contrast. We therefore planned to develop a simple and low cost population screening tool to identify those at highest risk of silent MI validated against the CMR reference standard.100 asymptomatic patients with type 2 diabetes underwent electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiography, biomarker assessment and CMR at 3.0T including assessment of left ventricular ejection fraction and LGE. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) from 2 and 4 chamber cines was measured using feature tracking.17/100 patients with no history of cardiovascular disease had silent MI defined by LGE in an infarct pattern on CMR. Only 4 silent MI patients had Q waves on ECG. Patients with silent MI were older (65 vs 60, p=0.05), had lower E/A ratio (0.75 vs 0.89, p=0.004), lower GLS (-15.2% vs -17.7%, p=0.004) and higher NT-proBNP (106ng/L vs 52ng/L, p=0.003). A combined risk score derived from these 4 factors had an area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of 0.823 (0.734-0.892), P<0.0001. A score of ?3/5 had 82% sensitivity and 72% specificity for silent MI.Using measures that can be derived in an outpatient clinic setting, we have developed a novel screening tool for the detection of silent MI in type 2 diabetes. The screening tool had significantly superior diagnostic accuracy than current ECG criteria for the detection of silent MI in asymptomatic patients
User-friendly tail bounds for sums of random matrices
This paper presents new probability inequalities for sums of independent,
random, self-adjoint matrices. These results place simple and easily verifiable
hypotheses on the summands, and they deliver strong conclusions about the
large-deviation behavior of the maximum eigenvalue of the sum. Tail bounds for
the norm of a sum of random rectangular matrices follow as an immediate
corollary. The proof techniques also yield some information about matrix-valued
martingales.
In other words, this paper provides noncommutative generalizations of the
classical bounds associated with the names Azuma, Bennett, Bernstein, Chernoff,
Hoeffding, and McDiarmid. The matrix inequalities promise the same diversity of
application, ease of use, and strength of conclusion that have made the scalar

Analysis causes of the incidence and compare social, economic, physical characteristics of informal settlements, case study: city of Marivan in Kurdistan province
Informal settlements are one of the problems of urban management in developing countries. Various theories about the causes and management of these settlements have been proposed. The most important of these theories, new socialist, liberal and dependency can be noted. The theory that argues for mandatory clearing informal settlement is not logical. Empowerment approach to be interested by countries and international organizations, and successful examples of this approach, with emphasis on the internal dynamics of these communities has been experienced. This paper tries to analyze the causes of marginalization and social, economic and spatial characteristics of informal settlement of Marivan city in Kurdistan province. Research areas consist of 4 region of Marivan informal settlement (Kosar,tape Mosk, sardoshiha, Tefine) sample size based on Cochran formula is 320 samples that Randomly and in four districts have been selected. Reasons for residents that they living in such places and social, economic characteristics of marginalized communities collected and entered into SPSS software and have been analyzed. The results show that more than 50 percent of residents in informal settlement areas of the city have come to this neighborhood. The main factor in the development of these four areas is not rural migrants. The highest levels of rural migrants from the neighborhood Tefin are that only 47% of residents are immigrants. The results suggest the great differences in social, economic and physical characteristics of slums. Among neighborhoods communities tapa Mosk and Tefini in the index close to each other and compare to two other neighborhoods are poor
