    An exploratory study of a new kink activity: “Pup Play”

    his study presents the narratives and experiences of 30 gay and bisexual men who participate in a behavior known as “pup play.” Never empirically studied before, we use in-depth interviews and a modified form of grounded theory to describe the dynamics of pup play and develop a conceptual framework with which to understand it. We discuss the dynamics of pup play, demonstrating that it primarily consists of mimicking the behaviors and adopting the role of a dog. We show that the majority of participants use pup play for sexual satisfaction. It is also a form of relaxation, demonstrated primarily through the existence of a “headspace.” We classify pup play as a kink, and find no evidence for the framing of it as a form of zoophilia. We call for further research on pup play as a sexual kink and leisure activity from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives

    Valve interstitial cells induce donor-specific T-cell anergy

    AbstractObjectives: Valve allografts produce an immune response, which can influence their performance. The exact role of the interaction between recipient T cells and the different cellular components of the donor valve in stimulating an immune response is not known. Therefore the T-cell response to valve endothelial and interstitial cells was investigated in vitro. Methods: Valve endothelial and interstitial cells were characterized for cell-surface molecules before and after interferon γ treatment by means of a panel of specific monoclonal antibodies and flow cytometry. The proliferative response of highly purified T lymphocytes was used to assess the immunogenicity of cultured valve endothelial and interstitial cells. This was further investigated by using a 2-step tolerance-induction protocol. Results: Valve endothelial and interstitial cells express similar levels of human leukocyte antigens and adhesion and costimulatory molecules, which are either induced or upregulated after interferon γ treatment. T-cell responses to endothelial cells were detected after interferon γ treatment, but responses to interferon γ–treated interstitial cells were not detected. This lack of response resulted in the induction of T-cell anergy, which was reversed by the presence of the costimulatory molecule B7-1. Conclusions: Although valve endothelial and interstitial cells express a similar range of cell-surface molecules, it is only the endothelial cells that are immunogenic. In addition, we have shown that these 2 cell types interact in a donorspecific manner to orchestrate the immune response and therefore may have clinical relevance in the allogeneic response of the heart valve recipients.J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 2001;122:129-3

    This research’s objective is to assist the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) in its efforts to develop strategies to address natural hazard vulnerabilities and improve the resiliency of Kentucky’s transportation infrastructure. Recent federal legislation calls for state transportation agencies to develop a risk-based asset management plan for National Highway System (NHS) assets that includes consideration of natural hazards. Similarly, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) calls for state transportation agencies to identify potential vulnerabilities associated with extreme weather events and climate change, and to incorporate these findings into transportation planning, design, and maintenance practices

    Physical activity patterns in urban neighbourhood parks: Insights from a multiple case study

    Background: Many characteristics of urban parks and neighbourhoods have been linked to patterns of physical activity, yet untangling these relationships to promote increased levels of physical activity presents methodological challenges. Based on qualitative and quantitative data, this article describes patterns of activity within urban parks and the socio-demographic characteristics of park visitors. It also accounts for these patterns in relation to the attributes of parks and their surrounding neighbourhoods.Methods. A multiple case study was undertaken that incorporated quantitative and qualitative data derived from first-hand observation in a purposive sample of four urban parks. Quantitative data, based on direct observation of visitors' patterns of use and socio-demographic characteristics, were collected using a structured instrument. Differences in frequencies of observed activities and socio-demographic characteristics of visitors were compared between the four parks. Qualitative data, based on direct observation of park characteristics and patterns of use, were generated through digital photography and analyzed through captioning. Quantitative data on patterns in activity and socio-demographic characteristics were synthesized with the qualitative data on park and usage characteristics.Results: A comprehensive portrait of each park in the study was generated. Activity types (sedentary, walking, dog-related, cycling, and play), patterns of park use (time of day, day of week), and socio-demographic characteristics (age group, social group) differed between the four parks. Patterns in park use and activity appeared to be associated with socio-demographic characteristics of the surrounding neighbourhoods as well as the physical and social environmental characteristics specific to each park.Conclusions: Both park and neighbourhood characteristics influence patterns of use and physical activity within parks. The study findings suggest that socio-demographic characteristics of neighbourhoods surrounding parks need be considered in planning, development and management. Engaging local communities could help planners to develop and update urban parks in ways that reflect the needs and characteristics of community residents and, in turn, encourage visits and more physical activity amongst visitors

    Line Intensities and Molecular Opacities of the FeH F4ΔiX4ΔiF^4\Delta_i-X^4\Delta_i Transition

    We calculate new line lists and opacities for the F4ΔiX4ΔiF^4\Delta_i-X^4\Delta_i transition of FeH. The 0-0 band of this transition is responsible for the Wing-Ford band seen in M-type stars, sunspots and brown dwarfs. The new Einstein A values for each line are based on a high level ab initio calculation of the electronic transition dipole moment. The necessary rotational line strength factors (H\"onl-London factors) are derived for both the Hund's case (a) and (b) coupling limits. A new set of spectroscopic constants were derived from the existing FeH term values for v=0, 1 and 2 levels of the XX and FF states. Using these constants extrapolated term values were generated for v=3 and 4 and for JJ values up to 50.5. The line lists (including Einstein A values) for the 25 vibrational bands with v\leq4 were generated using a merged list of experimental and extrapolated term values. The FeH line lists were use to compute the molecular opacities for a range of temperatures and pressures encountered in L and M dwarf atmospheres. Good agreement was found between the computed and observed spectral energy distribution of the L5 dwarf 2MASS-1507.Comment: 52 pages, 3 figures, many tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement

    Unlocking the potential within: A preliminary study of individual and community outcomes from a university enabling program in rural Australia

Many rural communities have a pool of mature-aged local people seeking a career change or better lifestyle, which inevitably involves reskilling or upskilling. These people have strong local ties and are committed to their community. University enabling programs provide a bridge to higher education. This longitudinal study explores the impact on rural mature-aged people of participation in a university enabling program, in terms of further study and employment outcomes. The benefits of enabling programs extend beyond individuals, to family and friends, and beyond. These broader benefits include an enhanced local skills base in key industry areas, and an increased awareness of the value of higher education within the community. Enabling programs are a powerful but under-valued tool in helping to unlock and harness the potential within rural communities, both in the medium and longer term
