    Computational and theoretical aspects of a grain-boundary model that accounts for grain misorientation and grain-boundary orientation

    A detailed theoretical and numerical investigation of the infinitesimal single-crystal gradient plasticity and grain-boundary theory of Gurtin (2008) "A theory of grain boundaries that accounts automatically for grain misorientation and grain-boundary orientation". Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids 56 (2), 640-662, is performed. The governing equations and flow laws are recast in variational form. The associated incremental problem is formulated in minimization form and provides the basis for the subsequent finite element formulation. Various choices of the kinematic measure used to characterize the ability of the grain boundary to impede the flow of dislocations are compared. An alternative measure is also suggested. A series of three-dimensional numerical examples serve to elucidate the theory

    An ontology for ISO software engineering standards: 1) Creating the infrastructure

    Software engineering standards developed under the auspices of ISO/IEC JTC1's SC7 have been identified as employing terms whose definitions vary significantly between standards. This led to a request in 2012 to investigate the creation of an ontological infrastructure that aims to be a single coherent underpinning for all SC7 standards, present and future. Here, we develop that necessary infrastructure prior to its adoption by SC7 and its implementation (likely 2014). The proposal described here requires, firstly, the identification of a single comprehensive set of definitions, the definitional elements ontology (DEO). For the scope of an individual standard, only a subset of these definitional elements will be needed. Once configured, this definitional subset creates a configured definitional ontology or CDO. Both the DEO and the CDO are essentially foundational ontologies from which a domain-specific ontology known as a SDO or standard domain ontology can be created. Consequently, all such SDOs are conformant to a CDO and hence to the single DEO thus ensuring that all standards use the same ontological base. Standards developed in this fashion will therefore be not only of a higher quality but also, importantly, interoperable. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Does spinophilin play a role in alteration of NMDAR phosphorylation?

    poster abstractNormal brain function requires proper organization of downstream signaling pathways. This organization can be modulated by protein phosphorylation. Protein phosphorylation is a balance of phosphatases, such as protein phosphatase 1 (PP1), and kinases such as protein kinase A (PKA) and cyclin dependent kinase 5 (CDK5). Proper targeting of these proteins is critical for their normal function and is perturbed in various disease states. Spinophilin is critical in targeting PP1 to various substrates making it important in regulating the phosphorylation state and thus the function of various proteins including glutamate receptors, such as AMPARs and NMDARs. NMDARs are abundant postsynaptic proteins that are critical for normal synaptic communication. It has been reported that NMDAR phosphorylation modulates channel function. Here we aim to understand if spinophilin regulates NMDAR phosphorylation and function as well as the mechanisms by which the spinophilin NMDAR interaction are altered. Specifically, we have found that the presence of spinophilin decreases the abundance of PP1 bound to NMDAR. This affect was not observed when a PP1 binding-deficient spinophilin mutant (F451A) was expressed. Furthermore, activation of endogenous PKA and/or overexpression of PKA catalytic subunit robustly increased the association between spinophilin and GluN1 and C-terminal tail of the GluN2B subunit of the NMDAR. Conversely, these associations are decreased when CDK5 is present. Our future studies will evaluate the role of spinophilin in regulating the phosphorylation state of the NMDAR. Taken together, our data demonstrate that spinophilin can associate with multiple subunits of the NMDAR in HEK293 cells and that protein kinases can biphasically modulate these associations

Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 447(1), 234-245. doi:10.1093/mnras/stu2460Observations of redshift-space distortions in spectroscopic galaxy surveys offer an attractive method for observing the build-up of cosmological structure, which depends both on the expansion rate of the Universe and our theory of gravity. In preparation for analysis of redshift-space distortions from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) final data release, we compare a number of analytic and phenomenological models, specified in configuration space, to mock catalogues derived in different ways from several N-body simulations. The galaxies in each mock catalogue have properties similar to those of the higher redshift galaxies measured by BOSS but differ in the details of how small-scale velocities and halo occupancy are determined. We find that all of the analytic models fit the simulations over a limited range of scales while failing at small scales. We discuss which models are most robust and on which scales they return reliable estimates of the rate of growth of structure: we find that models based on some form of resummation can fit our N-body data for BOSS-like galaxies above 30 h(-1) Mpc well enough to return unbiased parameter estimates

    A Semantic Model for Enhancing Network Services Management and Auditing

    The road toward ubiquity, heterogeneity and virtualization of network services and resources urges for a formal and systematic approach to network management tasks. In particular, the semantic characterization and modeling of services provided to users assume an essential role in fostering autonomic service management, service negotiation and auditing. This paper is centered on the definition of an ontology for multiservice IP networks which intends to address multiple service management goals, namely: (i) to foster client and service provider interoperability; (ii) to manage network service contracts, facilitating the dynamic negotiation between clients and ISPs; (iii) to access and query SLA/SLSs data on an individual or aggregated basis to assist service provisioning in the network; and (iv) to sustain service monitoring and auditing. In order to take full advantage of the proposed semantic model, a service model API is provided to allow service management platforms to access the ontological contents. This ontological development also takes advantage of SWRL to discover new knowledge, enriching the possibilities of systems described using this support

    INTEGRAL observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud

    The first INTEGRAL observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (carried out in 2003) are reported in which two sources are clearly detected. The first source, SMC X-1, shows a hard X-ray eclipse and measurements of its pulse period indicate a continuation of the long-term spin-up now covering ~30 years. The second source is likely to be a high mass X-ray binary, and shows a potential periodicity of 6.8s in the IBIS lightcurve. An exact X-ray or optical counterpart cannot be designated, but a number of proposed counterparts are discussed. One of these possible counterparts shows a strong coherent optical modulation at ~2.7d, which, together with the measured hard X-ray pulse period, would lead to this INTEGRAL source being classified as the fourth known high mass Roche lobe overflow system.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
