    The role of binarity in Wolf-Rayet central stars of planetary nebulae

    Over a hundred planetary nebulae (PNe) are known to have H-deficient central stars that mimic the spectroscopic appearance of massive Wolf-Rayet stars. The formation of these low-mass Wolf-Rayet stars, denoted [WR] stars, remains poorly understood. While several binary formation scenarios have been proposed, there are too few [WR] binaries known to determine their feasibility. Out of nearly 50 post-common-envelope (post-CE) binary central stars known, only PN G222.8−-04.2 ([WC7], P=1.26P=1.26 d) and NGC 5189 ([WO1], P=4.05P=4.05 d) have a [WR] component. The available data suggests that post-CE central stars with [WR] components lack main sequence companions and have a wider orbital separation than typical post-CE binaries. There is also some indirect evidence for wide binaries that could potentially lead to the discovery of more [WR] binaries.Comment: To appear in conference proceedings of the Physics of Evolved Stars meeting. 4 page

    A patent is an intellectual property right granted as a reward for the labours of the inventor so as to commercially exploit the invention in return for disclosure of the invention. The benefits of the patent system find perfect expression in the employment situation since the employer is better equipped to exploit the invention through provision of resources and capital whereas the employee is provided with an opportunity to develop his technical know-how. A comparative study of the laws pertaining to employee inventions in the United Kingdom, Federal Republic of Germany and the United States of America reveals a variety of approaches to the subject of employee inventions. The approach of the South African law on the subject is inadequate and legal reform is a necessity.     Imbalance Learning for Variable Star Classification

    The accurate automated classification of variable stars into their respective sub-types is difficult. Machine learning based solutions often fall foul of the imbalanced learning problem, which causes poor generalisation performance in practice, especially on rare variable star sub-types. In previous work, we attempted to overcome such deficiencies via the development of a hierarchical machine learning classifier. This 'algorithm-level' approach to tackling imbalance, yielded promising results on Catalina Real-Time Survey (CRTS) data, outperforming the binary and multi-class classification schemes previously applied in this area. In this work, we attempt to further improve hierarchical classification performance by applying 'data-level' approaches to directly augment the training data so that they better describe under-represented classes. We apply and report results for three data augmentation methods in particular: Randomly Augmented Sampled Light curves from magnitude Error (RASLE), augmenting light curves with Gaussian Process modelling (GpFit) and the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE). When combining the 'algorithm-level' (i.e. the hierarchical scheme) together with the 'data-level' approach, we further improve variable star classification accuracy by 1-4%. We found that a higher classification rate is obtained when using GpFit in the hierarchical model. Further improvement of the metric scores requires a better standard set of correctly identified variable stars and, perhaps enhanced features are needed

    Vps35 Mediates Vesicle Transport between the Mitochondria and Peroxisomes

    SummaryMitochondria-derived vesicles (MDVs) have been shown to transport cargo from the mitochondria to the peroxisomes [1]. Mitochondria and peroxisomes share common functions in the oxidation of fatty acids and the reduction of damaging peroxides [2, 3]. Their biogenesis is also linked through both the activation of master transcription factors such as PGC-1α [4, 5] and the common use of fission machinery, including DRP1, Mff, and hFis1 [6–9]. We have previously shown that MDVs are formed independently of the known mitochondrial fission GTPase Drp1 and are enriched for a mitochondrial small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) E3 ligase called MAPL (mitochondrial-anchored protein ligase) [1]. Here, we demonstrate that the retromer complex, a known component of vesicle transport from the endosome to the Golgi apparatus [10–13], regulates the transport of MAPL from mitochondria to peroxisomes. An unbiased screen shows that Vps35 and Vps26 are found in complex with MAPL, and confocal imaging reveals Vps35 recruitment to mitochondrial vesicles. Silencing of Vps35 or Vps26A leads to a significant reduction in the delivery of MAPL to peroxisomes, placing the retromer within a novel intracellular trafficking route and providing insight into the formation of MAPL-positive MDVs

    Confirmation of six Be X-ray binaries in the Small Magellanic Cloud

    The X-ray binary population of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) contains a large number of massive X-ray binaries, and the recent survey of the SMC by XMM–Newton has resulted in almost 50 more tentative high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) candidates. Using probability parameters from Haberl and Sturm together with the optical spectra and timing in this work, we confirm six new massive X-ray binaries in the SMC. We also report two very probable binary periods of 36.4 d in XMM 1859 and of 72.2 d in XMM 2300. These Be X-ray binaries are likely part of the general SMC population, which rarely undergoes an X-ray outburst.This paper is based on ESO data from 079.D−0371 and 088.D−0352.     RXTE Discovery of Multiple Cyclotron Lines during the 2004 December Outburst of V0332+53

    We present an analysis of the 2-150 keV spectrum of the transient X-ray pulsar V0332+53 taken with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in 2004 December. We report on the detection of three cyclotron resonance features at 27, 51, and 74 keV in the phase-averaged data, corresponding to a polar magnetic field of 2.7 x 10^12 G. After 4U0115+63, this makes V0332+53 the second accreting neutron star in which more than two cyclotron lines have been detected; this has now also been confirmed by INTEGRAL. Pulse-phase spectroscopy reveals remarkably little variability of the cyclotron line through the 4.4 s X-ray pulse.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
