Collaboration experience in the supply chain of knowledge and patent development
In this paper we aim at understanding the role of collaboration experience in supply chains of knowledge (SCoK). The SCoK of a company is its supply chain not related to the flow of physical goods but to the flow of R&D commodities. R&D commodities are for example patents, technologies, research services, studies, and projects, and, in high-tech industries, their development and commercialization is considered as important as real products. To accomplish our aim in this paper we fulfil the following research objectives: 1) investigate the relationship between the collaboration experience in SCoK and the propensity of the firm to develop new patents; 2) examine how the structural embeddedness of the firm within its SCoK mediates this relationship. We ground our conceptual model on the supply chain, open innovation and social capital literatures and empirically test our hypotheses on a cross-sectional dataset of 208 biotech companies that have signed 612 SCoK agreements in the years 2006–2010. The key findings of this study are: first, accumulating experience in SCoK collaborations facilitates the development of new patents; second, being central and bridging structural holes within the SCoK are two means by which the experience in SCoK collaborations is translated into new patents
Damages of Digitized Historical Images as Objects for Content Based Applications
This work presents the preliminary results achieved within a FIRB project aimed to develop innovative support tools for automatic or semi-automatic restoration of damaged digital images oncerning archaeological and monumental inheritance of Mediterranean coast. In particular, this paper is focused on a methodology for describing image degradation and its meta-representation for content based storing and retrieval.
Our innovative idea is to decompose and store in a conventional RDBMS the images content, considering the damages as objects of the images. Moreover, a set of descriptors(a subset of MPEG7 descriptors) is used for the damage meta representation aimed to content based application. Finally we developed a user-friendly database management tool for manipulating the contents of the database
Critical assessment of two-qubit post-Markovian master equations
A post-Markovian master equation has been recently proposed as a tool to
describe the evolution of a system coupled to a memory-keeping environment [A.
Shabani and D. A. Lidar, Phys. Rev. A 71, 020101 (R) (2005)]. For a single
qubit affected by appropriately chosen environmental conditions, the
corresponding dynamics is always legitimate and physical. Here we extend such
situation to the case of two qubits, only one of which experiences the
environmental effects. We show how, despite the innocence of such an extension,
the introduction of the second qubit should be done cum grano salis to avoid
consequences such as the breaking of the positivity of the associated dynamical
map. This hints at the necessity of using care when adopting phenomenologically

Pseudomodes as an effective description of memory: Non-Markovian dynamics of two-state systems in structured reservoirs
We investigate the non-Markovian dynamics of two-state systems in structured
reservoirs. We establish a connection between two theoretical quantum
approaches, the pseudomodes [B. M. Garraway, Phys. Rev. A 55, 2290 (1997)] and
the recently developed non-Markovian quantum jump method [J. Piilo et al.,
Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 180402 (2008)]. This connection provides a clear physical
picture of how the structured reservoir affects the system dynamics, indicating
the role of the pseudomodes as an effective description of the environmental

Frozen and Invariant Quantum Discord under Local Dephasing Noise
In this chapter, we intend to explore and review some remarkable dynamical
properties of quantum discord under various different open quantum system
models. Specifically, our discussion will include several concepts connected to
the phenomena of time invariant and frozen quantum discord. Furthermore, we
will elaborate on the relation of these two phenomena to the non-Markovian
features of the open system dynamics and to the usage of dynamical decoupling

Sound production mechanism in the semiterrestrial crab Neohelice granulata (Brachyura, Varunidae)
Very few studies of sound production in the Brachyura have simultaneously identified the type of individuals (e.g. sex) producing acoustic signals, the structures involved in making sound and the social context. The emission and type of sound signals in Neohelice granulata were previously characterized, but the sex and the body structures involved in the sound production mechanism were not determined. In the present study, experiments conducted in the laboratory demonstrated that acoustic signals were produced by males through an up-down movement of the cheliped by rubbing the merus against the pterygostomial area of the carapace. The micromorphology of the merus showed that it has a ridge of tubercles which may act as a plectrum, while the pterygostomial area bears tubercles and might function as the pars stridens. Acoustic signals were displayed more frequently in the presence of receptive females. Agonistic encounters among males also occurred more often in the presence of receptive females. We propose that Neohelice granulata males use their chelipeds to produce sound signals in a mating context, probably to attract the receptive female and/or to repel other males when a receptive female is present. The sudden change phenomenon of quantum discord
Even if the parameters determining a system's state are varied smoothly, the
behavior of quantum correlations alike to quantum discord, and of its classical
counterparts, can be very peculiar, with the appearance of non-analyticities in
its rate of change. Here we review this sudden change phenomenon (SCP)
discussing some important points related to it: Its uncovering,
interpretations, and experimental verifications, its use in the context of the
emergence of the pointer basis in a quantum measurement process, its appearance
and universality under Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics, its theoretical
and experimental investigation in some other physical scenarios, and the
related phenomenon of double sudden change of trace distance discord. Several
open questions are identified, and we envisage that in answering them we will
gain significant further insight about the relation between the SCP and the
