Spontaneous Dynamics of Asymmetric Random Recurrent Spiking Neural Networks

We study in this paper the effect of an unique initial stimulation on random recurrent networks of leaky integrate and fire neurons. Indeed given a stochastic connectivity this so-called spontaneous mode exhibits various non trivial dynamics. This study brings forward a mathematical formalism that allows us to examine the variability of the afterward dynamics according to the parameters of the weight distribution. Provided independence hypothesis (e.g. in the case of very large networks) we are able to compute the average number of neurons that fire at a given time -- the spiking activity. In accordance with numerical simulations, we prove that this spiking activity reaches a steady-state, we characterize this steady-state and explore the transients.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figure

A number of methods have been described in the literature for the isolation and concentration of dissolved organic matter from landfill leachate samples. Membrane ultrafiltration, gel permeation and high performance liquid chromatography are commonly used because these techniques can be easily adapted to separate soluble organic substances from large volumes of leachate. The objective of this study was to fractionate and characterize dissolved organic matter found in leachates collected from sanitary landfills. The discharges are defined with regard to the geological context from which they are situated and the nature of the waste. The discharges are classified in three categories, based upon the value of the permeability coefficient K, the substratum and its continuity.- class 1; impermeable site (K 10-[sup]6 ms-¹). The studied leachates come from landfill of class 2:- Crézin (Haute-Vienne) of compacted type: it was used for household rubbish and assimilated ordinary wastes. - Foussais-Payre (Vendée): leachate coming from the fermentation area of a composting plant and from the compost refuse. Fractionation of dissolved organic matter was applied on three leachates samples. The first sample was the raw leachate collected from the Crézin landfill and the two others came from Foussais-Payre (a raw sample and a sample treated in an aerated lagoon for 52 days). Because of the wide variety of organic compounds that can be found in such leachates, we classified and isolated the different groups of organic constituents using an XAD resin adsorption procedure. The experimental method consisted of acidifying samples to pH 1 to isolate the first fraction (fig. 1) and then treating the remaining supernatant with XAD-7 and XAD-4 resins. The adsorption on XAD resins allowed the isolation of the other organic fractions (figs. 2 to 6). Various analytical techniques were applied to characterize the isolated fractions such as elementary analysis infrared spectroscopy, ¹3C nuclear magnetic resonance (¹3C CP/MAS NMR), gas chromatography (GC/FID), and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Results showed that more then 90% of the total organic carbon (TOC) in leachates can he recovered by the isolation procedure. Most of the isolated compounds corresponded to humic substances (76% to 90% of the chemical oxygen demand). Hydrophobic and hydrophilic neutral compounds were found only in small concentrations

Native rodent species are unlikely sources of infection for Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis along the Transoceanic Highway in Madre de Dios, Peru.

An estimated 2.3 million disability-adjusted life years are lost globally from leishmaniasis. In Peru's Amazon region, the department of Madre de Dios (MDD) rises above the rest of the country in terms of the annual incidence rates of human leishmaniasis. Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis is the species most frequently responsible for the form of disease that results in tissue destruction of the nose and mouth. However, essentially nothing is known regarding the reservoirs of this vector-borne, zoonotic parasite in MDD. Wild rodents have been suspected, or proven, to be reservoirs of several Leishmania spp. in various ecosystems and countries. Additionally, people who live or work in forested terrain, especially those who are not regionally local and whose immune systems are thus naïve to the parasite, are at most risk for contracting L. (V.) braziliensis. Hence, the objective of this study was to collect tissues from wild rodents captured at several study sites along the Amazonian segment of the newly constructed Transoceanic Highway and to use molecular laboratory techniques to analyze samples for the presence of Leishmania parasites. Liver tissues were tested via polymerase chain reaction from a total of 217 rodents; bone marrow and skin biopsies (ear and tail) were also tested from a subset of these same animals. The most numerous rodent species captured and tested were Oligoryzomys microtis (40.7%), Hylaeamys perenensis (15.7%), and Proechimys spp. (12%). All samples were negative for Leishmania, implying that although incidental infections may occur, these abundant rodent species are unlikely to serve as primary reservoirs of L. (V.) braziliensis along the Transoceanic Highway in MDD. Therefore, although these rodent species may persist and even thrive in moderately altered landscapes, we did not find any evidence to suggest they pose a risk for L. (V.) braziliensis transmission to human inhabitants in this highly prevalent region

Analyse non-linéaire des instabilités mécaniques induites par le frottement dans les systèmes de freinage aéronautique: effets de l'amortissement sur le comportement transitoire et les cycles limites

    Get PDF

Using dense seismo-acoustic network to provide timely warning of the 2019 paroxysmal Stromboli eruptions

Stromboli Volcano is well known for its persistent explosive activity. On July 3rd and August 28th 2019, two paroxysmal explosions occurred, generating an eruptive column that quickly rose up to 5 km above sea level. Both events were detected by advanced local monitoring networks operated by Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) and Laboratorio di Geofisica Sperimentale of the University of Firenze (LGS-UNIFI). Signals were also recorded by the Italian national seismic network at a range of hundreds of kilometres and by infrasonic arrays up to distances of 3700 km. Using state-of-the-art propagation modeling, we identify the various seismic and infrasound phases that are used for precise timing of the eruptions. We highlight the advantage of dense regional seismo-acoustic networks to enhance volcanic signal detection in poorly monitored regions, to provide timely warning of eruptions and reliable source amplitude estimate to Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres (VAAC)

Design, Performance and Series Production of Superconducting Trim Quadrupoles for the Large Hadron Collider

    Get PDF
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be equipped with several thousands of superconducting corrector magnets. Among the largest ones are the superconducting trim quadrupoles (MQTL). These twin-aperture magnets with a total mass of up to 1700 kg have a nominal gradient of 129 T/m at 1.9 K and a magnetic length of 1.3 m. Sixty MQTL are required for the LHC, 36 operating at 1.9 K in and 24 operating at 4.5 K. The paper describes the design features, and reports the measured quench performance and magnetic field quality of the production magnets. The MQTL magnet production is shared between CERN and industry. This sharing is simplified due to the modular construction, common to all twin-aperture correctors

Exploring local knowledge and perceptions on zoonoses among pastoralists in northern and eastern Tanzania

Background: Zoonoses account for the most commonly reported emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, there is limited knowledge on how pastoral communities perceive zoonoses in relation to their livelihoods, culture and their wider ecology. This study was carried out to explore local knowledge and perceptions on zoonoses among pastoralists in Tanzania. Methodology and principal findings: This study involved pastoralists in Ngorongoro district in northern Tanzania and Kibaha and Bagamoyo districts in eastern Tanzania. Qualitative methods of focus group discussions, participatory epidemiology and interviews were used. A total of 223 people were involved in the study. Among the pastoralists, there was no specific term in their local language that describes zoonosis. Pastoralists from northern Tanzania possessed a higher understanding on the existence of a number of zoonoses than their eastern districts' counterparts. Understanding of zoonoses could be categorized into two broad groups: a local syndromic framework, whereby specific symptoms of a particular illness in humans concurred with symptoms in animals, and the biomedical framework, where a case definition is supported by diagnostic tests. Some pastoralists understand the possibility of some infections that could cross over to humans from animals but harm from these are generally tolerated and are not considered as threats. A number of social and cultural practices aimed at maintaining specific cultural functions including social cohesion and rites of passage involve animal products, which present zoonotic risk. Conclusions: These findings show how zoonoses are locally understood, and how epidemiology and biomedicine are shaping pastoralists perceptions to zoonoses. Evidence is needed to understand better the true burden and impact of zoonoses in these communities. More studies are needed that seek to clarify the common understanding of zoonoses that could be used to guide effective and locally relevant interventions. Such studies should consider in their approaches the pastoralists' wider social, cultural and economic set up
