Shell-shaped condensates with gravitational sag: contact and dipolar interactions.

    Get PDF
We investigate Bose-Einstein condensates in bubble trap potentials in the presence of a small gravity. In particular, we focus on thin shells and study both contact and dipolar interacting condensates. We first analyze the effects of the anisotropic nature of the dipolar interactions, which already appear in the absence of gravity and are enhanced when the polarization axis of the dipoles and the gravity are slightly misaligned. Then, in the small gravity context, we investigate the dynamics of small oscillations of these thin, shell-shaped condensates triggered either by an instantaneous tilting of the gravity direction or by a sudden change of the gravity strength. This system could be a preliminary stage for realizing a gravity sensor in space laboratories

The paper presents a collaborative research between GREID (Research Group on Inclusive Education and Diversity, UIB) and the AEAC (Area of Education of Es Baluard, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Palma). This is a pioneering study that applies the principles of Universal Design to assess the accessibility that presents the museum. Specifically, the study suggests two basic objectives: The first one is to identify the barriers to undestand the information and content that the museum offers any visitor. The second one is to evaluate the accessibility of visits and workshops for schools. Through various data collection instruments (direct observation, analysis and video recordings of meetings, document analysis and focus groups), we identify significant barriers that reflect an homogeneus concepto f visitor, still predominant in the Museum and also that is shared with a lot of schools.

Shaping the niche of Taxus baccata, a modelling exercise using biologically meaningful information

Widely used Correlative Species Distribution Models (C-SDMs) usually make some simplifying assumptions, often failing to consider important ecological and evolutionary attributes potentially hindering the characterization of the species niche. Here, we use the tree species Taxus baccata to explore the effects of including biologically meaningful information on processes and features beyond purely abiotic factors that are expected to determine its niche and range size. To elucidate how these often neglected factors affect C-SDM results, we modelled the current niche in the species' southernmost European range using Maxent. More specifically, we included available basic information regarding biotic interactions, local adaptation and non-equilibrium demographic dynamics. The potential effect of biological interactions was introduced using habitat suitability of co-occurring tree species as predictive variables. Local adaptation was included modelling two distinct regional adaptive groups. We also used individual growth estimated under field conditions as a surrogate for demographic behaviour to control for the quality of model predictions and empirically assess the effect of biotic interactions. Including information on co-occurring tree species improved model performance and decreased the projected range size in most cases. These effects were not a result of biological interactions per se, but instead a consequence of co-occurring species accounting for fine-scale environmental variability not described by any of the climatic variables used. Considering local adaptation allowed detecting the role of different climatic variables in shaping the niche of each adaptive group that could potentially also act as selective pressures in the near future. Finally, and more importantly, we found that including populations that are probably currently found under non-equilibrium suboptimal conditions might largely overestimate the species niche

    Rotating mixed 3^3He-4^4He nanodroplets

Mixed 3^3He-4^4He droplets created by hydrodynamic instability of a cryogenic fluid-jet may acquire angular momentum during their passage through the nozzle of the experimental apparatus. These free-standing droplets cool down to very low temperatures undergoing isotopic segregation, developing a nearly pure 3^3He crust surrounding a very 4^4He-rich superfluid core. Here, the stability and appearance of rotating mixed helium droplets are investigated using Density Functional Theory for an isotopic composition that highlights, with some marked exceptions related to the existence of the superfluid inner core, the analogies with viscous rotating droplets.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures (plus Supplemental Material). Chiral currents in Bose-Einstein condensates subject to current-density interactions

Persistent currents in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates become chiral in the presence of current-density interactions. This phenomenon is explored in ultracold atoms loaded in a rotating ring geometry, where diverse current-carrying stationary states are analytically found to generalize previously known solutions to the mean-field equations of motion. Their dynamical stability is tested by numerical simulations that show stable currents for states with both constant and modulated density profiles, while decaying currents appear only beyond a unidirectional velocity threshold. Recent experiments in the field make these states within experimental reach.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

Twelve clinical cases of neoplasia affecting the encephal are presented. There were nine dífferent types of tumors: four were located in the rostral fossa, four in the medial fossa and four in the posterior fossa. Surgical approaches to the different areas of the encephálus are exposed and how to handle the neoplasia tissue is explained. Two nat very common surgical approaches to the craneal base in veterinary feld are described. Magnetic resonance is of unquestionable importance to plan the surgery, giving other pronostic expectatives to those animals affected by brain tumors

This study identifies and analyses both the enabling factors and the obstacles for improvement to the quality of life of students with Chronic Illness (CI) at school, as well as the role of Physical Education in the development and welfare of this group. Following 43 interviews with paediatricians and students with CI, as well as 8 discussion groups with healthcare professionals, teachers and families, we detected a patent need for an in-depth study of the role of Physical Education in improvement to the quality of life of students with CI at school. Among the results obtained in the study, it is noteworthy that all the participating groups agree that the school, and particularly the figure of a committed mentor teacher, are essential to enabling the solid emotional and physical development of students with CI. On the other hand, we would highlight a lack of communication among professionals, the scarcity of resources and non participation in Physical Education classes, extracurricular outings and activities as obstacles that hinder the quality of life for students with CI at school. Based on the results obtained, we propose a reconsideration of the care of students with CI at school, particularly in Physical Education classes, and the provision of healthcare staff and psychologists, to create support networks for this group. Rotating mixed 3He-4He nanodroplets

Mixed 3He−4He droplets may acquire angular momentum during their passage through the nozzle of the experimental apparatus, cooling down and undergoing isotopic segregation, developing a 3He crust surrounding a superfluid 4He core. Within density functional theory, we investigate their stability and the relations between their angular momenta and their shapes. We uncover a variety of behaviors where the interplay between the superfluid 4He core and the normal-fluid 3He coating leads to a scenario that both bears analogies with viscous rotating drops and displays new features such as configurations with a fissioned or three-lobed 4He core, or with multiply charged vortices
