A Simulated Annealing Method to Cover Dynamic Load Balancing in Grid Environment

High-performance scheduling is critical to the achievement of application performance on the computational grid. New scheduling algorithms are in demand for addressing new concerns arising in the grid environment. One of the main phases of scheduling on a grid is related to the load balancing problem therefore having a high-performance method to deal with the load balancing problem is essential to obtain a satisfactory high-performance scheduling. This paper presents SAGE, a new high-performance method to cover the dynamic load balancing problem by means of a simulated annealing algorithm. Even though this problem has been addressed with several different approaches only one of these methods is related with simulated annealing algorithm. Preliminary results show that SAGE not only makes it possible to find a good solution to the problem (effectiveness) but also in a reasonable amount of time (efficiency)

Race and Ethnic Inequality in Health and Health Care in Colombia

In this paper we explore race and ethnic health inequalities in Colombia. We first characterize the situation of Afro-Colombians and indigenous populations in Colombia. Second, we document racial/ethnic disparities in health outcomes and access to health care using data from the Living Standards Survey and the evaluation of the Familias en Acción program. Third, we set up a statistical model that allows us to test whether some of the health inequalities that are observed still remain after controlling for a wide range of individual and household observed characteristics, including access to health care. The results indicate that most racial and ethnic disparities in health and access to health care disappear once we control for socioeconomic characteristics of individuals, employment status and characteristics of the job and geographic location among other things. Generalized effective hamiltonian for graphene under non-uniform strain

We use a symmetry approach to construct a systematic derivative expansion of the low energy effective Hamiltonian modifying the continuum Dirac description of graphene in the presence of non-uniform elastic deformations. We extract all experimentally relevant terms and describe their physical significance. Among them there is a new gap-opening term that describes the Zeeman coupling of the elastic pseudomagnetic field and the pseudospin. Actualmente la información resulta ser uno de los principales recursos con que cuenta las empresas. Y compartiendo la opinión del autor inglés Alvin Tofler, “aquellas que puedan administrarla y aprovecharla para crear valor, son las que sobresaldrán." Partiendo de esta base, encontramos la relevancia del papel del Contador Público en el estudio de esta información y de agregar valor en la toma de decisiones. El presente Trabajo de Investigación busca demostrar la importancia del Contador Público en el análisis de Estados Contables, disminuyendo el nivel de incertidumbre sobre el comportamiento de ciertas variables importantes. Conocer los principales indicadores económicos y financieros, así como interpretarlos, es imprescindible para la conducción de una empresa en un mercado competitivo. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo desarrollar los aspectos relevantes del análisis económico-financiero con el fin de destacar la importancia de esta herramienta, a través de aspectos teóricos y prácticos. Esta premisa nos permite considerar al análisis de Estados Contables como una herramienta valiosa tanto para las operaciones de la empresa, como también para las decisiones de la Gerencia, si se tiene claro el objetivo del análisis y la manera de llevarlo a cabo. Se destaca el rol del profesional, desarrollando cómo debe ser su perfil, qué herramientas puede utilizar y finalmente comentando de qué manera las conclusiones de éste pueden ayudar a la gestión del ente. Otro importante objetivo de este Trabajo de Investigación, consiste en contribuir a la reflexión de los empresarios para que incorporen como accionar cotidiano de la empresa el análisis de la información que se maneja para optimizar la toma de decisiones y lleven a cabo una eficaz gestión de la misma. Pero el campo de dominio del análisis va más allá de los procesos de toma de decisiones internas, ya que entregará información relevante a agentes externos, como instituciones financieras, inversionistas, acreedores, etc. Cada uno de estos potenciales usuarios de la información tienen necesidades distintas y por ende su análisis estará orientado a su real necesidad. Para cumplir con los objetivos descriptos, en los primeros capítulos de este Trabajo se desarrollan aspectos teóricos sobre Información y sobre Estados Financieros. Una vez definidos los conceptos, se describen las tareas previas necesarias para el análisis y se detallan las herramientas con las que cuenta el profesional para poder llevarlo a cabo. Análisis cualitativo y cuantitativo de la informalidad empresarial en Colombia

Este documento profundiza el estudio de los determinantes de la informalidad empresarial en Colombia y aporta nueva evidencia al respecto. El análisis se realiza tanto cuantitativa como cualitativamente. El primero se desarrolla con el Censo Empresarial de Cali y Yumbo de 2005, el cual permite estudiar, por primera vez, la incidencia y los determinantes de la informalidad en empresas de cualquier tamaño y sin problemas relacionados con la muestra. Los resultados indican que en las microempresas, la informalidad es un fenómeno generalizado, y que en la mayoría de los casos, tiende a desaparecer con el crecimiento de las empresas. Por otro lado, el análisis cualitativo se desarrolla tomando como base sesiones de grupo dirigidas a empresarios formales e informales, lo cual facilita estudiar aspectos que no pueden ser identificados sólo con análisis estadísticos. Feeding habits of the threatened aquatic Andean frog Telmatobius rubigo (Anura: Telmatobiidae)

The aquatic Andean frogs of the genus Telmatobius have evolved closely with the aquatic ecosystems of the Andes of South America. The Laguna de Los Pozuelos’ Rusted Frog (Telmatobius rubigo) is a Threatened and endemic species of the Central Andean Puna ecoregion in Argentina. This species has a specialized feeding mechanism which relies on the inertial suction of prey, but our knowledge about its natural history is still incomplete. This study examined the feeding habits of T. rubigo by the stomach fushing technique. The relevance of the registered prey items was assessed using the dietary importance value index, and the relationship between frog body size and prey volume was determined. In total, 189 prey items were identifed in 29 stomach content samples, reaching a representative number of diet samples for this species. Telmatobius rubigo had a fully aquatic diet, with a clear predominance of adult aquatic coleopterans, immature stages of benthic insects, and crustaceans; and a high incidence of non-nutritive elements (sand and vegetation debris) was also found in the stomach contents. The results indicate that the species exhibits generalist feeding habits, and the volume of consumed prey items is positively related to the body size of the frogs. We suggest that the species develops mainly an active search mode of their benthic prey. This study represents one of the most complete dietary records for a Telmatobius species, and helps us to understand the ecology of this species in the extreme desert environment of the high Andes Puna. Atypical presentation of cervical necrotizing fasciitis. Case report

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a soft tissue infection with a low incidence, characterized by rapid progression and high morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this report is to communicate the case of a patient diagnosed with cervical NF and its successful management. A 54-year-old male consulted after suffering from the condition for seven days. It was characterized by bilateral submandibular swelling, accompanied by fever, dysphagia, odynophagia, which were severely affecting the patient’s generalhealth. Physical examination revealed a painful, erythematous cervical swelling. A cervical computed tomography scan was performed, revealing a gaseous collection in the left mucosal pharyngeal space, extending to the glottis, associated with significant deep plane soft tissue emphysema onon the left side of the neck and with possible involvement of the danger space; pertinent lab findings include 19,190/uL leukocytes and 219mg/LCRP. Broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy was initiated with ceftriaxoneand clindamycin. Exploratory surgery, lavage and drainage of the collected material were performed. Streptococcus anginosus was isolated by culture. The patient recovered appropriately showing improvement in clinical as well as in inflammatory parameters, being discharged on the ninth day. Ancillary Services in Hybrid AC/DC Low Voltage Distribution Networks

In the last decade, distribution systems are experiencing a drastic transformation with the advent of new technologies. In fact, distribution networks are no longer passive systems, considering the current integration rates of new agents such as distributed generation, electrical vehicles and energy storage, which are greatly influencing the way these systems are operated. In addition, the intrinsic DC nature of these components, interfaced to the AC system through power electronics converters, is unlocking the possibility for new distribution topologies based on AC/DC networks. The use of global and local semantic strategies in the oral discourse of non Mapuche Chileans from the city of Temuco

Este trabajo da cuenta de resultados parciales de una investigación acerca de la discriminación étnica de los chilenos no mapuches contra la etnia mapuche en la ciudad de Temuco, Chile. Para este efecto, basados en la hipótesis de que dicha discriminación existe y que se manifiesta a través del discurso hablado, se analizan las estrategias semánticas globales y locales en entrevistas de dichos chilenos no mapuches sobre la base de conversaciones semiformales realizadas con un cuestionario guía. Los resultados demostraron que las estrategias semánticas globales, fundamentalmente de evasión y de autopresentación positiva de sí mismo, se evidencian a través de las estrategias semánticas locales, que son principalmente de autojustificación, de evasión de ciertos temas, de concesión aparente y de implicaturas. Además, las expresiones de prejuicio explícito son más numerosas en el estrato social bajo, en tanto que en los estratos medio y alto este prejuicio es más implícito y subyacente.This paper shows partial results of a research project having to do with ethnic discrimination of non Mapuche Chileans against the Mapuches in the city of Temuco, Chile. To this effect, based on the hypothesis that such discrimination exists and is expressed through oral discourse, global semantic strategies and local semantic strategies are analyzed from a corpus of semiformal interviews using a guide questionnaire of said non Mapuche Chileans. The results showed that global semantic strategies, basically evasion and positive self-representation, are manifested through local semantic strategies, which are, mainly, self-justification, evasion of certain topics, apparent concession and implicatures. Besides, the explicit discriminatory expressions are more evident in the lower social stratum, while the implicit prejudice prevails in the middle and high social strata
