Successful treatment of psychosis induced by interferon alpha and ribavirin with paliperidone: first case reported

Several clinical studies have shown a large number of mental symptoms by immunomodulatory treatment with interferon (IFN). The most frequently described symptoms are depression, suicidal behaviour, manic symptoms, anxiety, psychosis and delirium, associated with other non-specific symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, psychomotor retardation, decreased libido, insomnia, difficulty in concentration and attention. Having a history of mental disorder contraindicates the use of IFN-alpha. These adverse effects that affect the mental state appear usually at the beginning of the treatment (most after 3 weeks of treatment). The incidence of psychotic episodes is low and the episodes usually remit when treatment is interrupted; only some cases require antipsychotic treatment. We present the case of a patient affected with hepatitis C who began to present self-referential delirious symptoms after receiving the treatment with IFN and who was successfully treated with paliperidone. This patient could be classified within the group of high-risk psychiatric patients given the family history of schizophrenia and his personal history of illegal drug consumption. The pharmacological actions of paliperidone are similar to other high potency atypical antipsychotics. The receptorbinding profile of paliperidone most closely resembles that of risperidone and ziprasidone. Paliperidone differs from risperidone and most other antipsychotics by its relatively low extent of enzymatic hepatic metabolism. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case described that was successfully treated with paliperidone

Dental treatment for handicapped patients: sedation vs general anesthesia and update of dental treatment in patients with different diseases

Dental treatment on Handicapped Patients is often difficult because many people with a wide range of ages (from children to the elderly) with different pathologies that can affect the oral cavity and differ widely are included in this group. This situation creates some controversy, because according to pathology, each patient will be treated differently depending on collaboration, general health status, age or medication used to treat this pathologies. Ac - cording to this situation we can opt for an outpatient treatment without any kind of previous medication, a treat - ment under conscious or deep sedation or a under general anesthesia treatment. With this systematic review is intended to help clarify in which cases patients should be treated under general anesthesia, sedation (conscious or deep) or outpatient clinic without any medication, as well as clarify what kind of treatments can be carried in private dental clinics and which should be carried out in a hospital. It will also discuss the most common diseases among this group of patients and the special care to be taken for their dental treatment

IL-10 deficiency exacerbates the brain inflammatory response to permanent ischemia without preventing resolution of the lesion

This work examines whether interleukin-10 (IL-10) deficiency exacerbates inflammation and worsens the outcome of permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO). Expression of IL-10 and IL-10 receptor (IL-10R) increased after ischemia. From day 4, reactive astrocytes showed strong IL-10R immunoreactivity. Interleukin-10 knockout (IL-10 KO) mice kept in conventional housing showed more mortality after pMCAO than the wild type (WT). This effect was associated with the presence of signs of colitis in the IL-10 KO mice, suggesting that ongoing systemic inflammation was a confounding factor. In a pathogen-free environment, IL-10 deficiency slightly increased infarct volume and neurologic deficits. Induction of proinflammatory molecules in the IL-10 KO brain was similar to that in the WT 6 hours after ischemia, but was higher at day 4, while differences decreased at day 7. Deficiency of IL-10 promoted the presence of more mature phagocytic cells in the ischemic tissue, and enhanced the expression of M2 markers and the T-cell inhibitory molecule CTLA-4. These findings agree with a role of IL-10 in attenuating local inflammatory reactions, but do not support an essential function of IL-10 in lesion resolution. Enraizamiento in vitro de embriones cigóticos de Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd ex Mart

Acrocomia aculeata is a potential specie for the energy industry, however, the latency in its seeds delay germination, affecting performance. The experiment was performed in the Biology Laboratory of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the National University of Asunción; the objective was to establish a protocol for zygotic embryogenesis and rooting of this species. A completely randomized design was used, applying Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test with 5% error probability, subject to verification of assumptions of distribution The treatments consisted of MS medium (Murashige and Skoog) supplemented with benzylaminopurine (BAP) of 1, 2 and 4 ppm, MS medium with 2 g/L of active carbon (AC) and simple MS mediums. 45 zygotic embryos were initially cultivated on MS medium supplemented with 2 g/L of AC and exposed to initial darkness for 20 days, then subcultured in the mentioned treatments. Root length was the measured variable, assessed in two periods of 20 days. There was no significant effects in the treatments with BAP, the CA suppressed explants oxidation; whereas the best results showed treatments 1 (MS + 1 ppm BAP) and 4 (MS + CA 2g/L) with 6 and 5 cm of root length respectively, after 40 incubation days.Acrocomia aculeata es una especie potencial para la industria energética; sin embargo, la latencia de sus semillas retrasa la germinación, afectando al rendimiento. El experimento se realizó en el Laboratorio de Biología de la Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias de la Universidad Nacional de Asunción, el objetivo fue establecer un protocolo de embriogénesis cigótica y enraizamiento de esta especie. Se utilizó un diseño completamente al azar, aplicándose el test Kruskal-Wallis y Mann-Whitney con 5% de probabilidad de error, previa comprobación de supuestos de distribución. Los tratamientos fueron medios MS (Murashige y Skoog) con bencilaminopurina (BAP) en 1, 2 y 4 ppm, medios MS con 2 g/L de carbón activado (CA) y MS simples. Se utilizaron 45 embriones cigóticos cultivados inicialmente en medios MS con 2g/L de CA, expuestos a oscuridad inicial por 20 días; posteriormente subcultivados en los tratamientos. La variable medida fue la longitud radicular, evaluada en dos periodos de 20 días. No existió efectos significativos en los tratamientos con BAP, el CA suprimió la oxidación en explantes; mientras que, los mejores resultados presentaron los tratamientos 1 (MS+1 ppm de BAP) y 4 (MS+CA 2g/L) con 6 y 5 cm de longitud radicular respectivamente, luego de 40 días de incubación

Análisis de algunos aspectos de la teoría de la objetivación

En este artículo se presentan y se discuten algunos de los elementos fundadores de la teoría de la objetivación. Destacamos inicialmente los que consideramos ser los temas clave de esta teoría, sobre la base de la contradicción epistemológica clásica entre teorías realistas y teorías pragmáticas, para luego proponer, de una manera problematizada, reflexiones sobre dos de sus pilares: el concepto de labor y el concepto de objetivación. Proponemos también un análisis de la teoría de la objetivación con referencia a posibles relaciones con otros enfoques en educación matemática
