    Interventions to Control Virus Transmission During an Outbreak of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever: Experience from Kikwit, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1995.

    On 6 May 1995, the Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) coordinator in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), received a request for assistance for what was believed to be a concurrent outbreak of bacillary dysentery and viral hemorrhagic fever (suspected Ebola hemorrhagic fever [EHF]) in the town of Kikwit, DRC. On 11 May, the MSF intervention team assessed Kikwit General Hospital. This initial assessment revealed a nonfunctional isolation ward for suspected EHF cases; a lack of water and electricity; no waste disposal system; and no protective gear for medical staff. The priorities set by MSF were to establish a functional isolation ward to deal with EHF and to distribute protective supplies to individuals who were involved with patient care. Before the intervention, 67 health workers contracted EHF; after the initiation of control measures, just 3 cases were reported among health staff and none among Red Cross volunteers involved in body burial

    Pricing High Growth Firms: Arbitrage Opportunities in the Inc. 100

    The ability of the market to price high growth stocks is examined by analyzing the returns to simple investment portfolio strategies based on public information. The portfolios consist of shares in the firms listed in the Inc. 100 Ranking of the fastest growing public companies in America. The results indicate that significant abnormal returns are generated by these strategies, even after adjusting for risk. Although the tests could potentially be affected by a form of survivorship bias, supplementary analyses indicate that this is unlikely to be the case here. These results support the assumption that markets have difficulties pricing high-growth entities, leaving significant arbitrage opportunities in these stocks and validating the use of various market timing practices

    Traumatic urinary bladder rupture: the usefulness of CT cystography

    A 38-year-old male presented at the emergency unit with acute abdominal pain and massive hematuria after a fall in the stairs of his home. At physical examination, tenderness was found in the hypogastric area and in both right and left iliac regions. The first radiological investigation performed was ultrasonography (Fig. A). Free liquid was found in the Morisson pouch, in the perihepatic-space and in the perisplenic fossa. The bladder contained blood clots and there was no liquid in the Douglas pouch. Active bleeding was not excluded. Unenhanced and contrast-enhanced CT of the abdomen in arterial, venous and late phase was performed and large amount of intraperitoneal liquid was confirmed but without evident cause (Fig. B). There were no visceral injuries neither skeletal lesion nor vascular lesion. 60 minutes later, an additional cystography phase was performed and revealed a rupture in the superior aspect of the bladder with intraperitoneal spilling of contrast (Fig. C and D). Consequently, the patient was admitted for surgical repair of the bladder defect

    K2 Y F5 crystal symmetry determined by using rare-earth ions as paramagnetic probes

    The electron paramagnetic resonance angular dependences for Gd3+ and Ce3+ centers in K2 Y F5 crystals show that the Y3+ site has monoclinic Ch symmetry in these crystals. This site symmetry is compatible with the crystal structure having the Pnam space group. From the zero-field splitting parameters of the Gd3+ center, it is deduced that the symmetry of the Y3+ sites is close to trigonal around the b axis, distorted by the overall orthorhombic symmetry of the crystal structure. This information is required for the identification of radiation-induced centers in this material, which shows favorable properties for applications as thermoluminescent dosimeter. © 2007 The American Physical Society

    A 11-year-old boy was admitted to the emergency department complaining of pain in the right hip, fever and had developed a noticeable limp sinds one week. He had fallen on his buttock in the swimming pool a few weeks before. Physical examination revealed pain at the mobilisation of the right hip, without limitation of movement. The laboratory data showed increased value CRP (154 mg/l) and leukocytosis at 11300 WBC/µl

    PAPER-64 Constraints On Reionization II: The Temperature Of The z=8.4 Intergalactic Medium

    We present constraints on both the kinetic temperature of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z=8.4, and on models for heating the IGM at high-redshift with X-ray emission from the first collapsed objects. These constraints are derived using a semi-analytic method to explore the new measurements of the 21 cm power spectrum from the Donald C. Backer Precision Array for Probing the Epoch of Reionization (PAPER), which were presented in a companion paper, Ali et al. (2015). Twenty-one cm power spectra with amplitudes of hundreds of mK^2 can be generically produced if the kinetic temperature of the IGM is significantly below the temperature of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB); as such, the new results from PAPER place lower limits on the IGM temperature at z=8.4. Allowing for the unknown ionization state of the IGM, our measurements find the IGM temperature to be above ~5 K for neutral fractions between 10% and 85%, above ~7 K for neutral fractions between 15% and 80%, or above ~10 K for neutral fractions between 30% and 70%. We also calculate the heating of the IGM that would be provided by the observed high redshift galaxy population, and find that for most models, these galaxies are sufficient to bring the IGM temperature above our lower limits. However, there are significant ranges of parameter space that could produce a signal ruled out by the PAPER measurements; models with a steep drop-off in the star formation rate density at high redshifts or with relatively low values for the X-ray to star formation rate efficiency of high redshift galaxies are generally disfavored. The PAPER measurements are consistent with (but do not constrain) a hydrogen spin temperature above the CMB temperature, a situation which we find to be generally predicted if galaxies fainter than the current detection limits of optical/NIR surveys are included in calculations of X-ray heating.Comment: companion paper to Ali et al.     Differences in serum IL-6 response after 1°C rise in core body temperature in individuals with spinal cord injury and cervical spinal cord injury during local heat stress

    Objectives: Passive rise in core body temperature achieved by head-out hot water immersion (HHWI) results in acute increases in serum interleukin (IL)-6 but no change in plasma adrenaline in patients with cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI). The purpose of the present study was to determine the mechanism of heat stress-induced increase in serum IL-6. Setting: A cross-sectional study. Methods: The study subjects were 9 with CSCI, 10 with thoracic and lumbar spinal cord injury (TLSCI) and 8 able-bodied (AB) subjects. Time since injury was 16.4±4.1 years in TLSCI and 16.1±3.4 years in CSCI. Subjects were subjected to lower-body heat stress (LBH) by wearing a hot water-perfused suit until 1°C increase in core temperature. The levels of serum IL-6, plasma adrenaline, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, C-reactive protein (CRP), and counts of blood cells were measured at normothermia and after LBH. Results: Serum IL-6 concentrations increased significantly immediately after LBH in all the three groups. ΔIL-6% was lower in CSCI subjects compared with AB subjects. Plasma adrenaline concentrations significantly increased after LBH in AB and TLSCI subjects, but did not change throughout the study in CSCI subjects. Cardiac output and heart rate increased at the end of LBH in all three groups. Conclusion: Under a similar increase in core temperature, ΔIL-6% was lower in the CSCI group compared with the AB group. These findings suggest that the observed rise in IL-6 during hyperthermia is mediated, at least in part, by plasma adrenaline

    We present a new approximation scheme for the centrifugal term to obtain a quasi-exact analytical bound state solutions within the framework of the position-dependent effective mass radial Klein-Gordon equation with the scalar and vector Hulth\'{e}n potentials in any arbitrary DD dimension and orbital angular momentum quantum numbers l.l. The Nikiforov-Uvarov (NU) method is used in the calculations. The relativistic real energy levels and corresponding eigenfunctions for the bound states with different screening parameters have been given in a closed form. It is found that the solutions in the case of constant mass and in the case of s-wave (l=0l=0) are identical with the ones obtained in literature.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur
