    Abstract. For compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds we lift the Bloch invariant defined by Neumann and Yang to an integral class in K3(C). Applying the Borel and the Bloch regulators, one gets back the volume and the Chern-Simons invariant of the manifold. We also discuss the non-compact case, in which there appears a Z/2-ambiguity

    Hall effect in the normal state of high Tc cuprates

    We propose a model for explaining the dependence in temperature of the Hall effect of high Tc cuprates in the normal state in various materials. They all show common features: a decrease of the Hall coefficient RH with temperature and a universal law, when plotting RH(T)/RH(T0) versus T/T0, where T0 is defined from experimental results. This behaviour is explained by using the well known electronic band structure of the CuO2 plane, showing saddle points at the energies ES in the directions (0,+/-pi) and (+/-pi,0). We remark that in a magnetic field, for energies E>ES the carrier orbits are hole-like and for E<ES they are electron-like, giving opposite contributions to RH. We are abble to fit the experimental results for a wide range of hole doping, and to fit the universal curve. For us kb*T0 is simply EF-ES, where EF is the Fermi level varying with the doping.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figure

    Electric field effect modulation of transition temperature, mobile carrier density and in-plane penetration depth in NdBa2Cu3O(7-delta) thin films

    We explore the relationship between the critical temperature, T_c, the mobile areal carrier density, n_2D, and the zero temperature magnetic in-plane penetration depth, lambda_ab(0), in very thin underdoped NdBa2Cu3O{7-delta} films near the superconductor to insulator transition using the electric field effect technique. We observe that T_c depends linearly on both, n_2D and lambda_ab(0), the signature of a quantum superconductor to insulator (QSI) transition in two dimensions with znu-bar where z is the dynamic and nu-bar the critical exponent of the in-plane correlation length.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Events in the affective city: Affect, attention and alignment in two ordinary urban events

    In a representational regime, planned urban events are used by urban planners to render urban projects visible and acceptable. As a corollary of the focus of urban studies on their representational dimension and in spite of a burgeoning literature on the notion of affective urbanism, the experiential character of events remains surprisingly unexplored. This paper argues that an ordinary regime of events is mobilised by city-makers to act on the embodied, affective experience of the city and on the ways urban dwellers know and act upon the city. By analysing planned urban events in their embodied, experiential dimension, we focus on the ways in which, through the design of ephemeral material dispositives, urbanists attempt to encourage citizens to incorporate ways of knowing and acting on space and on the modalities of knowing and acting that are at play. We stage an encounter between critical event studies and Ingoldian approaches to affect and attention, examining two urban events in a Swiss canton. We show how intense encounters with urban matter are staged in an attempt to modulate affects, guide attention, and produce alignment with a specific political project, asking urban dwellers either to embody a project still in the making or to cultivate expectations regarding an already-written future

    The Impact of The European Enlargement and CAP Reforms on Agricultural Markets. Much Ado about Nothing?

    We analyze the effects of the 2004 CAP reform and EU enlargement on European and world agricultural markets. We compare the results from a CAP reform only and a CAP reform plus enlargement scenarios to a no-enlargement baseline implementing Agenda 2000 CAP policies. We utilize the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute's policy analysis model to simulate the effects of CAP reform and EU enlargement on production, consumption, and trade for the EU, its New Member States (NMS), and major players in world agricultural markets. The model is a partial-equilibrium model of world agricultural markets including important producer and consumer countries in world livestock and products, dairy, grains, oilseeds and products, cotton and sugar markets. Each country's commodity sectors are modeled with structural equations which incorporate all important policy parameters. With prices in most commodities in the NMS historically below EU-15 prices accession leads to substantial price increases for many commodities in the NMS. Higher prices stimulate production and dampen consumption in the NMS, and trade between the new members and the EU-15 increases. Prices in the EU-15 decrease moderately. The impact of the two reforms on world markets is negligible. The CAP reforms have their greatest impact in the EU-15 markets for meats, rice, rapeseed, and dairy products.     Micro-cantilever testing of diamond - silicon carbide interfaces in silicon carbide bonded diamond materials produced by reactive silicon infiltration

    SiC-bonded diamond materials produced by pressureless reactive infiltration of diamond preforms with silicon show high hardness and wear resistance. These properties are due to the relatively high diamond volume content of approximately 50 vol% and the mechanically strong interface between diamond and SiC. To determine the bending strength of individual interfaces between diamond and SiC, micro-cantilevers were prepared by focused ion beam milling at 13 grain boundaries and in-situ bending tests were carried out in a scanning electron microscope. The determined strength of cantilevers showing interface fracture was 10.4 ± 4.0 GPa. Fracture surfaces were analyzed to verify the fracture behavior and initiation. In addition to fracture at the interface diamond/SiC, fracture occurred inside the SiC grains and at the SiC/silicon interface at comparable strength values.
