O programa nacional de fortalecimento da agricultura familiar no Brasil: uma análise sobre a distribuição regional e setorial dos recursos.
No Brasil, as políticas públicas para o espaço rural sempre tenderam a priorizar a agricultura patronal, em detrimento dos agricultores familiares. Todavia, os estudos realizados pelos órgãos FAO - INCRA deram subsídio para a criação do Programa Nacional de Fortalecimento da Agricultura Familiar (PRONAF), resultando em um novo direcionamento dos investimentos públicos, os quais passaram a contemplar o segmento dos agricultores familiares. Entende-se o PRONAF como uma política não-compensatória, que, apesar de seus problemas, tem contribuído de fato para mudanças e melhorias no espaço agrário brasileiro. Desde sua criação no final da década de 1990, o PRONAF passou por várias mudanças em sua estrutura administrativa e operacional, a fim de alcançar seus objetivos e adequar-se face a complexa realidade social agrária brasileira. Sendo assim, o presente estudo visa discutir as ações do Estado por meio desse Programa, a partir de suas linhas de atuação, bem como analisar a distribuição de suas concessões de crédito regional e setorialmente. Assim, os procedimentos metodológicos utilizados para a realização deste trabalho compreendem pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, além de pesquisa em fontes secundárias, no intuito de obter dados e informações relevantes para a análise das relações sociais estabelecidas em meio a esse processo de concretização e espacialização desse Programa. Dentre as implicações do PRONAF pode-se notar em âmbito nacional, uma diminuição da disparidade regional brasileira, bem como a preocupação que o Programa tem demonstrado com os aspectos socioculturais locais e regionais, como forma de garantir que seus investimentos perpassem a dimensão econômica, mas valorize outras dimensões, a exemplo dos elementos culturais
Disparities in allele frequencies and population differentiation for 101 disease-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms between Puerto Ricans and Non-Hispanic Whites
BACKGROUND. Variations in gene allele frequencies can contribute to differences in the prevalence of some common complex diseases among populations. Natural selection modulates the balance in allele frequencies across populations. Population differentiation (FST) can evidence environmental selection pressures. Such genetic information is limited in Puerto Ricans, the second largest Hispanic ethnic group in the US, and a group with high prevalence of chronic disease. We determined allele frequencies and population differentiation for 101 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 30 genes involved in major metabolic and disease-relevant pathways in Puerto Ricans (n = 969, ages 45–75 years) and compared them to similarly aged non-Hispanic whites (NHW) (n = 597). RESULTS. Minor allele frequency (MAF) distributions for 45.5% of the SNPs assessed in Puerto Ricans were significantly different from those of NHW. Puerto Ricans carried risk alleles in higher frequency and protective alleles in lower frequency than NHW. Patterns of population differentiation showed that Puerto Ricans had SNPs with exceptional FST values in intronic, non-synonymous and promoter regions. NHW had exceptional FST values in intronic and promoter region SNPs only. CONCLUSION. Studying the Pulsation of Mira Variables in the Ultraviolet
We present results from an empirical study of the Mg II h & k emission lines
of selected Mira variable stars, using spectra from the International
Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). The stars all exhibit similar Mg II behavior during
the course of their pulsation cycles. The Mg II flux always peaks after optical
maximum near pulsation phase 0.2-0.5, although the Mg II flux can vary greatly
from one cycle to the next. The lines are highly blueshifted, with the
magnitude of the blueshift decreasing with phase. The widths of the Mg II lines
are also phase-dependent, decreasing from about 70 km/s to 40 km/s between
phase 0.2 and 0.6. We also study other UV emission lines apparent in the IUE
spectra, most of them Fe II lines. These lines are much narrower and not nearly
as blueshifted as the Mg II lines. They exhibit the same phase-dependent flux

Flickering in FU Orionis
We analyze new and published optical photometric data of FU Orionis, an
eruptive pre-main sequence star. The outburst consists of a 5.5 mag rise at B
with an e-folding timescale of roughly 50 days. The rates of decline at B and V
are identical, 0.015 +- 0.001 mag per yr. Random fluctuations superimposed on
this decline have an amplitude of 0.035 +- 0.005 mag at V and occur on
timescales of 1 day or less. Correlations between V and the color indices U-B,
B-V, and V-R indicate that the variable source has the optical colors of a G0
supergiant. We associate this behavior with small amplitude flickering of the

Measurement of secondary particle production induced by particle therapy ion beams impinging on a PMMA target
Particle therapy is a technique that uses accelerated charged ions for cancer treatment and combines a high irradiation precision with a high biological effectiveness in killing tumor cells [1]. Informations about the secondary particles emitted in the interaction of an ion beam with the patient during a treatment can be of great interest in order to monitor the dose deposition. For this purpose an experiment at the HIT (Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center) beam facility has been performed in order to measure fluxes and emission profiles of secondary particles produced in the interaction of therapeutic beams with a PMMA target. Geologic map, volcanic stratigraphy and structure of the Cabo de Gata volcanic zone, Betic-Rif orogen, SE Spain
The geologic map of the Neogene Cabo de Gata volcanic zone is presented together with a comprehensive volcanic stratigraphy and structure based on logging, correlation and mapping. Volcanic rocks are interbedded with sedimentary rocks throughout the Cabo de Gata volcanic zone. The volcano-sedimentary succession of Cabo de Gata has been divided into formations according to lithology, age, composition and stratigraphic position. The contacts between sedimentary units and volcanic units and between formations are unconformities. Sedimentary units were deposited during periods of volcanic repose. The depositional environment of volcanism in Cabo de Gata is characterized as shallow-water submarine to emergent based on lithofacies of volcanic rocks and on fossil content and sedimentary structures of sedimentary rocks. The eruptive style in Cabo de Gata is dominantly effusive, although small-volume explosive eruptions due to magma-water interaction processes and to explosions of lava flow and domes complexes occurred.Peer Reviewe
Invasive fungal infections in patients with acute myeloid leucemia and in those submitted to allogeneic hemopoieticstem cell transplant: who is at highest risk ?
Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are a growing cause
of morbidity and mortality in patients with acute
myeloid leukemia (AMLs) and in recipients of allogeneic
hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCTs) (1–6).
It is widely debated if either allo-HSCTs or AMLs are to
be considered at higher risk, but no data comparing the
two categories of patients have been reported in
literature so far.
This cohort study has been conducted from January
1999 to December 2003 in hematology wards located
throughout Italy. The study was aimed at evaluating the
incidence and mortality for IFIs in adult AMLs and in
patients submitted to all types of allo-HSCT procedures;
a comparison between the two categories of patients was
carried out
Self-consistent simulation of plasma scenarios for ITER using a combination of 1.5D transport codes and free-boundary equilibrium codes
Self-consistent transport simulation of ITER scenarios is a very important
tool for the exploration of the operational space and for scenario
optimisation. It also provides an assessment of the compatibility of developed
scenarios (which include fast transient events) with machine constraints, in
particular with the poloidal field (PF) coil system, heating and current drive
(H&CD), fuelling and particle and energy exhaust systems. This paper discusses
results of predictive modelling of all reference ITER scenarios and variants
using two suite of linked transport and equilibrium codes. The first suite
consisting of the 1.5D core/2D SOL code JINTRAC [1] and the free boundary
equilibrium evolution code CREATE-NL [2,3], was mainly used to simulate the
inductive D-T reference Scenario-2 with fusion gain Q=10 and its variants in H,
D and He (including ITER scenarios with reduced current and toroidal field).
The second suite of codes was used mainly for the modelling of hybrid and
steady state ITER scenarios. It combines the 1.5D core transport code CRONOS
[4] and the free boundary equilibrium evolution code DINA-CH [5].Comment: 23 pages, 18 figure
