    Taylor-Lagrange renormalization scheme, Pauli-Villars subtraction, and light-front dynamics

    We show how the recently proposed Taylor-Lagrange renormalization scheme can lead to extensions of singular distributions which are reminiscent of the Pauli-Villars subtraction. However, at variance with the Pauli-Villars regularization scheme, no infinite mass limit is performed in this scheme. As an illustration of this mechanism, we consider the calculation of the self-energy in second order perturbation theory in the Yukawa model, within the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics.     Investigating the consistency between proxy-based reconstructions and climate models using data assimilation: a mid-Holocene case study

    The mid-Holocene (6 kyr BP; thousand years before present) is a key period to study the consistency between model results and proxy-based reconstruction data as it corresponds to a standard test for models and a reasonable number of proxy-based records is available. Taking advantage of this relatively large amount of information, we have compared a compilation of 50 air and sea surface temperature reconstructions with the results of three simulations performed with general circulation models and one carried out with LOVECLIM, a model of intermediate complexity. The conclusions derived from this analysis confirm that models and data agree on the large-scale spatial pattern but the models underestimate the magnitude of some observed changes and that large discrepancies are observed at the local scale. To further investigate the origin of those inconsistencies, we have constrained LOVECLIM to follow the signal recorded by the proxies selected in the compilation using a data-assimilation method based on a particle filter. In one simulation, all the 50 proxy-based records are used while in the other two only the continental or oceanic proxy-based records constrain the model results. As expected, data assimilation leads to improving the consistency between model results and the reconstructions. In particular, this is achieved in a robust way in all the experiments through a strengthening of the westerlies at midlatitude that warms up northern Europe. Furthermore, the comparison of the LOVECLIM simulations with and without data assimilation has also objectively identified 16 proxy-based paleoclimate records whose reconstructed signal is either incompatible with the signal recorded by some other proxy-based records or with model physics

    Systematic renormalization scheme in light-front dynamics with Fock space truncation

    Within the framework of the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics, we develop a general non-perturbative renormalization scheme based on the Fock decomposition of the state vector and its truncation. The counterterms and bare parameters needed to renormalize the theory depend on the Fock sectors. We present a general strategy in order to calculate these quantities, as well as state vectors of physical systems, in a truncated Fock space. The explicit dependence of our formalism on the orientation of the light front plane is essential in order to analyze the structure of the counterterms. We apply our formalism to the two-body (one fermion and one boson) truncation in the Yukawa model and in QED, and to the three-body truncation in a scalar model. In QED, we recover analytically, without any perturbative expansion, the renormalization of the electric charge, according to the requirements of the Ward identity.Comment: 32 pages, 14 figures, submitted in Phys.     Relativistic description of electron scattering on the deuteron

    Within a quasipotential framework a relativistic analysis is presented of the deuteron current. Assuming that the singularities from the nucleon propagators are important, a so-called equal time approximation of the current is constructed. This is applied to both elastic and inelastic electron scattering. As dynamical model the relativistic one boson exchange model is used. Reasonable agreement is found with a previous relativistic calculation of the elastic electromagnetic form factors of the deuteron. For the unpolarized inelastic electron scattering effects of final state interactions and relativistic corrections to the structure functions are considered in the impulse approximation.     Nonperturbative renormalization in a scalar model within Light-Front Dynamics

    Within the covariant formulation of Light-Front Dynamics, in a scalar model with the interaction Hamiltonian H=gψ2(x)ϕ(x)H=-g\psi^{2}(x)\phi(x), we calculate nonperturbatively the renormalized state vector of a scalar "nucleon" in a truncated Fock space containing the NN, NπN\pi and NππN\pi\pi sectors. The model gives a simple example of non-perturbative renormalization which is carried out numerically. Though the mass renormalization δm2\delta m^2 diverges logarithmically with the cutoff LL, the Fock components of the "physical" nucleon are stable when LL\to\infty.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure

    Impact of indirect and ohmic heating sterilization processes on quality parameters of apple puree: Application in a real industrial line

    The aim of the present work is to investigate the impact of the production process and heat treatment technology to produce sterilized apple puree in the case of a real industrial production line. The technologies considered for the sterilisation process are traditional indirect thermal heating and ohmic heating, while the results will be expressed in terms of residual amount of vitamin C, Furfural content and finally HunterLab colour space (L, a, b value). The samples for the evaluation of the comparison parameters have been taken in 3 different steps of the production process, i.e. in the fresh product, after hot finisher (after extraction) and at the end of the line (after sterilization and bottling). It has been observed that both processes considered showed similar performance for all the various parameters evaluated, leading to a very similar final product. This result is somehow unexpected since the Ohmic technology has demonstrated in the last years to bring significant advantages in terms of preserving of nutrients and of colour stability. This could be since apple puree is a sort of homogeneous product, while the best advantages for the Ohmic heating are expected to be found in heterogeneous products containing pieces or particulate matter. But the main reason is related to the fact that in the present work the focus is on the whole process and not only on the heat treatment technology. One of the aims is to put the attention on the importance of specifically designing the whole production line: the adoption of ohmic heating or other innovative technologies to shield nutrients and colour will be wasted if the rest of the production line is not specifically designed to obtain such objectives

    Effective Hamiltonians with Relativistic Corrections I: The Foldy--Wouthuysen transformation versus the direct Pauli reduction

    Two different methods of obtaining ``effective 2×22\times 2 Hamiltonians'' which include relativistic corrections to nonrelativistic calculations are discussed, the standard Foldy--Wouthuysen transformation and what we call the ``direct Pauli reduction''. We wish to investigate under which circumstances the two approaches yield the same result. Using a generic interaction with harmonic time dependence we show that differences in the corresponding effective S--matrices do arise beyond first--order perturbation theory. We attribute them to the fact that the use of the direct reduction effective Hamiltonian involves the additional approximation of neglecting contributions from the negative--energy intermediate states, an approximation which is unnecessary in the Foldy--Wouthuysen case as there the 4×44\times 4 Hamiltonian does not connect positive-- and negative--energy states. We conclude that at least in the cases where the relativistic Hamiltonian is known, using the direct Pauli reduction effective Hamiltonian introduces spurious relativistic effects and therefore the Foldy--Wouthuysen reduction should be preferred.Comment: TRIUMF preprint TRI-PP-93-1

    On isovector meson exchange currents in the Bethe-Salpeter approach

    We investigate the nonrelativistic reduction of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude for the deuteron electrodisintegration near threshold energies. To this end, two assumptions have been used in the calculations: 1) the static approximation and 2) the one iteration approximation. Within these assumptions it is possible to recover the nonrelativistic result including a systematic extension to relativistic corrections. We find that the so-called pair current term can be constructed from the PP-wave contribution of the deuteron Bethe-Salpeter amplitude. The form factor that enters into the calculation of the pair current is constrained by the manifestly gauge independent matrix elements.Comment: 15 pages, incl. 3 figures, to be published Phys. Rev.

    Cost-effectiveness of a community-delivered multicomponent intervention compared with enhanced standard care of obese adolescents: cost-utility analysis alongside a randomised controlled trial (the HELP trial)

    OBJECTIVE: To undertake a cost-utility analysis of a motivational multicomponent lifestyle-modification intervention in a community setting (the Healthy Eating Lifestyle Programme (HELP)) compared with enhanced standard care. DESIGN: Cost-utility analysis alongside a randomised controlled trial. SETTING: Community settings in Greater London, England. PARTICIPANTS: 174 young people with obesity aged 12-19 years. INTERVENTIONS: Intervention participants received 12 one-to-one sessions across 6 months, addressing lifestyle behaviours and focusing on motivation to change and self-esteem rather than weight change, delivered by trained graduate health workers in community settings. Control participants received a single 1-hour one-to-one nurse-delivered session providing didactic weight-management advice. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Mean costs and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) per participant over a 1-year period using resource use data and utility values collected during the trial. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was calculated and non-parametric bootstrapping was conducted to generate a cost-effectiveness acceptability curve (CEAC). RESULTS: Mean intervention costs per participant were £918 for HELP and £68 for enhanced standard care. There were no significant differences between the two groups in mean resource use per participant for any type of healthcare contact. Adjusted costs were significantly higher in the intervention group (mean incremental costs for HELP vs enhanced standard care £1003 (95% CI £837 to £1168)). There were no differences in adjusted QALYs between groups (mean QALYs gained 0.008 (95% CI -0.031 to 0.046)). The ICER of the HELP versus enhanced standard care was £120 630 per QALY gained. The CEAC shows that the probability that HELP was cost-effective relative to the enhanced standard care was 0.002 or 0.046, at a threshold of £20 000 or £30 000 per QALY gained. CONCLUSIONS: We did not find evidence that HELP was more effective than a single educational session in improving quality of life in a sample of adolescents with obesity. HELP was associated with higher costs, mainly due to the extra costs of delivering the intervention and therefore is not cost-effective. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ISRCTN9984011
