    Altered vitamin B12 metabolism in the central nervous system is associated with the modification of ribosomal gene expression: new insights from comparative RNA dataset analysis

    Recent studies have confirmed the direct role of vitamin B12 (VitB12) in the central nervous system (CNS) homeostasis; nevertheless, the detailed mechanisms are poorly understood. By analyzing RNA-Seq and microarray datasets obtained from databanks, this study aims to identify possible basic mechanisms, related to the brain, involved in altering the gene expression under VitB12 deficiency mimicking conditions. The database inquiry returned datasets generated from distinctly heterogeneous experimental sets and considering the quality and relevance requirements, two datasets from mouse and one from rat models were selected. The analyses of individual datasets highlighted a change in ribosomal gene expression in VitB12 deficiency mimicking conditions within each system. Specifically, a divergent regulation was observed depending on the animal model: mice showed a down regulation of the ribosomal gene expression, while rats an upregulation. Interestingly, E2f1 was significantly upregulated under VitB12 deficiency mimicking conditions in the animal models, with a greater upregulation in rats. The rat model also revealed putative E2F1 Transcription Factor Binding Sites (TFBSs) in the promoter of the differently regulated genes involved in ribosomal gene expression. This suggested the possibility that E2F1, being greater expressed in rats, could activate the ribosomal genes having E2F1 TFBSs, thus giving a plausible explication to the divergent regulation observed in animal models. Despite the great diversity of the experimental sets used to generate the datasets considered, a common alteration of the ribosomes exists, thereby indicating a possible basic and conserved response to VitB12 deficiency. Moreover, these findings could provide new insights on E2F1 and its association with CNS homeostasis and VitB12 deficiency

    Microstrip antenna with DGS based on CSRR array for WiMAX applications

    This paper reports a novel method for designing a miniaturized microstrip antenna with DGS based on CSRR array which operates in the frequency of 2.6GHz for low band WiMAX application. The proposed antenna is designed using ANSYS HFSS simulation software. The antenna with optimized parameters is fabricated using FR-4 substrate of thickness 1.6 mm. The simulated and measured performances of the antenna in terms of return loss, directivity and radiation patterns are presented in this work. When Complimentary Split Ring Resonators (CSRRs) array are placed on the ground plane, the resonant frequency is shifted  to a lower value and patch size is reduced .The measurements were taken and compared with the simulated results. The performance characteristics obtained from the measurements show that the proposed antenna is suited for WiMAX application at 2.6GHz

    Optical vortex generation from molecular chromophore arrays

    The generation of light endowed with orbital angular momentum, frequently termed optical vortex light, is commonly achieved by passing a conventional beam through suitably constructed optical elements. This Letter shows that the necessary phase structure for vortex propagation can be directly produced through the creation of twisted light from the vacuum. The mechanism is based on optical emission from a family of chromophore nanoarrays that satisfy specific geometric and symmetry constraints. Each such array can support pairs of electronically delocalized doubly degenerate excitons whose azimuthal phase progression is responsible for the helical wave front of the emitted radiation. The exciton symmetry dictates the maximum magnitude of topological charge; detailed analysis secures the conditions necessary to deliver optical vortices of arbitrary order

    Weighted One-Deterministic-Counter Automata

    We introduce weighted one-deterministic-counter automata (ODCA). These are weighted one-counter automata (OCA) with the property of counter-determinacy, meaning that all paths labelled by a given word starting from the initial configuration have the same counter-effect. Weighted ODCAs are a strict extension of weighted visibly OCAs, which are weighted OCAs where the input alphabet determines the actions on the counter. We present a novel problem called the co-VS (complement to a vector space) reachability problem for weighted ODCAs over fields, which seeks to determine if there exists a run from a given configuration of a weighted ODCA to another configuration whose weight vector lies outside a given vector space. We establish two significant properties of witnesses for co-VS reachability: they satisfy a pseudo-pumping lemma, and the lexicographically minimal witness has a special form. It follows that the co-VS reachability problem is in P. These reachability problems help us to show that the equivalence problem of weighted ODCAs over fields is in P by adapting the equivalence proof of deterministic real-time OCAs by B\"ohm et al. This is a step towards resolving the open question of the equivalence problem of weighted OCAs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the regularity problem, the problem of checking whether an input weighted ODCA over a field is equivalent to some weighted automaton, is in P. Finally, we show that the covering and coverable equivalence problems for uninitialised weighted ODCAs are decidable in polynomial time. We also consider boolean ODCAs and show that the equivalence problem for (non-deterministic) boolean ODCAs is in PSPACE, whereas it is undecidable for (non-deterministic) boolean OCAs.Comment: 36 pages, 11 figure

    Developmental trends in voice onset time: some evidence for sex differences

    This study reports on an investigation into the voice onset time (VOT) patterns of the plosives /p b t d/ in a group of 30 children aged 7 (n = 10), 9 (n = 10) and 11 (n = 10) years. Equal numbers of girls and boys participated in the study. Each child named a series of letter objects to elicit /p b t d/ in a syllable onset position with a fixed vowel context. VOT data were examined for age, sex and plosive differences with the following hypotheses: Firstly, that there would be sex differences in the VOT patterns of preadolescent children. Secondly, that the sex differences in VOT patterns would be linked to age and development, and that these would eventually become marked by the age of 11 years, by which time adult-like VOT values should have been achieved. Finally, that the extent of sex and age differences would be dependent upon the plosive being investigated. Results indicated patterns of decrease with age in the VOT values of /p b/ for the boys, with some evidence of increases in the VOT values of /t/ for the girls. In addition, 'voiced' and 'voiceless' cognates showed a more marked bimodal distribution in the girls' VOT patterns. This bimodal distribution was investigated by examining the degree of difference between the VOT values of voiced and voiceless cognate pairs /p b/ and /t d/, and examining the effects of age, sex and cognate pair. These results indicated that more marked sex differences in the 'voiced'/'voiceless' contrast emerged between the data of the 9- and 11-year-olds, a pattern, which was more marked for the alveolar plosives. These preliminary results confirmed all three hypotheses. The findings are presented and discussed both within a developmental and sociophonetic framework

    Distributed Disdrometer and Rain Gauge Measurement Infrastructure Developed for GPM Ground Validation

    Global Precipitation Mission (GPM)retrieval algorithm validation requires datasets characterizing the 4-D structure, variability, and correlation properties of hydrometeor particle size distributions (PSD) and accumulations over satellite fields of view (FOV;<10 km). Collection of this data provides a means to assess retrieval errors related to beam filling and algorithm PSD assumptions. Hence, GPM Ground Validation is developing a deployable network of precipitation gauges and disdrometers to provide fine-scale measurements of PSD and precipitation accumulation variability. These observations will be combined with dual-frequency, polarimetric, and profiling radar data in a bootstrapping fashion to extend validated PSD measurements to a large coverage domain. Accordingly, a total of 24 Parsivel disdrometers(PD), 5 3rd-generation 2D Video Disdrometers (2DVD), 70 tipping bucket rain gauges (TBRG),9 weighing gauges, 7 Hot-Plate precipitation sensors (HP), and 3 Micro Rain Radars (MRR) have been procured. In liquid precipitation the suite of TBRG, PD and 2DVD instruments will quantify a broad spectrum of rain rate and PSD variability at sub-kilometer scales. In the envisioned network configuration 5 2DVDs will act as reference points for 16 collocated PD and TBRG measurements. We find that PD measurements provide similar measures of the rain PSD as observed with collocated 2DVDs (e.g., D0, Nw) for rain rates less than 15 mm/hr. For heavier rain rates we will rely on 2DVDs for PSD information. For snowfall we will combine point-redundant observations of SWER distributed over three or more locations within a FOV. Each location will contain at least one fenced weighing gauge, one HP, two PDs, and a 2DVD. MRRs will also be located at each site to extend the measurement to the column. By collecting SWER measurements using different instrument types that employ different measurement techniques our objective is to separate measurement uncertainty from natural variability in SWER and PSD. As demonstrated using C3VP polarimetric radar, gauge, and 2DVD/PD datasets these measurements can be combined to bootstrap an area wide SWER estimate via constrained modification of density-diameter and radar reflectivity-snowfall relationships. These data will be combined with snowpack, airborne microphysics, radar, radiometer, and tropospheric sounding data to refine GPM snowfall retrievals. The gauge and disdrometer instruments are being developed to operate autonomously when necessary using solar power and wireless communications. These systems will be deployed in numerous field campaigns through 2016. Planned deployment of these systems include field campaigns in Finland (2010), Oklahoma (2011), Canada (2012) and North Carolina (2013). GPM will also deploy 20 pairs of TBRGs within a 25 km2 region along the Virginia coast under NASA NPOL radar coverage in order to quantify errors in point-area rainfall measurements

It can disrupt their ability to work and carry out other daily activities, and to engage in satisfying personal relationships. Unlike a physical injury, a psychological injury cannot be easily recognized and understood. This research document is a conceptual work, which tries to define and isolate stress and stress related injuries, as well as psychological injuries at work. Such an understanding would help the top management to cater and prevent injuries of such extent. Based on literature, a model has been developed for the study and the research document has defined “Psychological injury as an employee’s explicit manifestation of distress in the form of affective behavioral and cognitive dysfunction in work context”. This research document can be considered a seminal work done in Indian context. This works gains importance in the light of increasing number of lawsuits in Indian courts on work- related stress and agony. India still does not have any laws that deal with emotional health and stress related injuries at work or psychological injuries as compared to other countries like Canada, U.K and the U.
