    Polarization scattering by intra-channel collisions.

    Get PDF
We show that polarization modulated and polarization multiplexed transmission may be significantly impaired by the polarization scattering induced by intra-channel cross-phase modulation and four-wave mixing. In polarization multiplexed transmission, channel interleaving may be used to mitigate the effect when two-pulse collisions are dominant

Intra-channel nonlinearity in differentially phase-modulated transmission

    Get PDF
The mechanisms responsible for nonlinear impairments in single-channel phase modulated system employing differential detection are investigated. The role of dispersion precompensation is discussed. It is shown that precompensation may be designed as to minimize the in-phase components of the fluctuations thus reducing nonlinear impairments. In differential-phase-shift-keying the effect of precompensation is stronger than in differential-quadrature-phase-shift-keying. The results of an analytic theory are compared with split-step based computer simulations using realistic system parameters

Singularities of Symmetric Hypersurfaces and Reed-Solomon Codes

We determine conditions on q for the nonexistence of deep holes of the standard Reed-Solomon code of dimension k over Fq generated by polynomials of degree k + d. Our conditions rely on the existence of q-rational points with nonzero, pairwise-distinct coordinates of a certain family of hypersurfaces defined over Fq. We show that the hypersurfaces under consideration are invariant under the action of the symmetric group of permutations of the coordinates. This allows us to obtain critical information concerning the singular locus of these hypersurfaces, from which the existence of q-rational points is established.Fil: Cafure, Antonio Artemio. The authors study a case of inguinal hernia occurred in a bitch, verifying the presence of a pregnant uterine horn in the herniary sac. They begun the work studing the frequency of inguinal hernia, in bitches, revealing that this is, perhaps, the first case reported among us. They revised several hypothesis assumed to explain the formation of these hernia and conclude by accepting Hendrickx’s point of view. They offer a summarized clinic history of the case, present considerations about the general operative technique of the inguinal hernia and describe the intervention. Finally they resum the post-operative, concluding by the success attained

After short considerations about the methods of closing wounds of the skin, the authors make a study about the subcuticular suture. Revising the bibliography which they were able to consult upon the subject they quote various methods subcuticular suture conceived by the authors. Immediately after they study the zig-zag subcuticular suture and describe the technique, the material, the method and the removing of the suture. They presente table with 241 operations performed on enimals, 206 being on dogs and 35 on cats, using systematically the indicated suture to the closing up of the cutaneous incisions. Based on discriminating observations carried out during three years of practice, they conclude by pointing out the advantages resulting of its use.

Internet of Things (IoT) technology best suits automation in different domains, such as home automation, retail, industry, and transportation, to name but a few. While these domains are strongly characterized by implicit user interaction, more recently, automation has been adopted also for the provision of interactive and immersive experiences that actively involve the users. IoT technology thus becomes the key for Smart Interactive Experiences (SIEs), i.e., immersive automated experiences created by orchestrating different devices to enable smart environments to fluidly react to the final users’ behavior. There are domains, e.g., cultural heritage, where these systems and the SIEs can support and provide several benefits. However, experts of such domains, while intrigued by the opportunity to induce SIEs, are facing tough challenges in their everyday work activities when they are required to automate and orchestrate IoT devices without the necessary coding skills. This paper presents a design approach that tries to overcome these difficulties thanks to the adoption of ontologies for defining Event-Condition-Action rules. More specifically, the approach enables domain experts to identify and specify properties of IoT devices through a user-defined semantics that, being closer to the domain experts’ background, facilitates them in automating the IoT devices behavior. We also present a study comparing three different interaction paradigms conceived to support the specification of user-defined semantics through a “transparent” use of ontologies. Based on the results of this study, we work out some lessons learned on how the proposed paradigms help domain experts express their semantics, which in turn facilitates the creation of interactive applications enabling SIEs.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
