Mallophaga found on chicks of purple heron Ardea purpurea and little egret Egretta garzetta at S’Albufera de Mallorca. We describe the species of chewing lice found on ten purple heron Ardea purpurea) chicks and seven little egret Egretta garzetta chicks inspected in S’Albufera de Mallorca Natural Park (Balearic Islands, Spain) in 2008. Ardeicola leucoproctus was found on the head of one of the herons, whereas Ciconiphilus decimphastiatus was detected on the wings of two other herons and in five egrets. This is the first observation of A. leucoproctus in Europe, though it is known to parasitize the purple heron in other locations. Ciconiphilus decimphastiatus has been described parasitizing Ardeid species in the Iberian peninsula but not in the Balearic Islands. The transmission of these parasites probably follows a vertical route. The low prevalence observed, together with the detection of species typical of Ardeidae, may indicate that the birds inspected were in a condition of good health

Objective: To describe and understand the experience of Latin American migrant women as caregivers of elderly people in situations of advanced illness and end of life. Method: Qualitative study using Gadamer’s hermeneutic phenomenology. Data were collected in 2019 through 9 semi-structured interviews with Latin American women caregivers, who had cared for people at the end of life, in the Province of Granada (Spain). Results: Two themes emerged: “Migrant caregiver at the end of life” and “And now, what should I do?”: the impact of the loss at the economic, emotional and labor level Conclusion: Care during the end of life of the cared person generates an additional overload to the situation of migrant women. The experience of this stage is related to the bond with the persons cared and their families, which may affect the development of complicated grief and personal problems related to the loss of employment and the absence of economic support. Assessment by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy of penetration depth in limestones of four nano-biocides based on silver/titanium nanoparticles

[Abstract]: Four biocidal treatments based on nanoparticles were designed and their penetration depths were char- acterized by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique. This kind of biocidal nanoparticles are being studied to be employed in historic buildings and stone monuments due to their capability to inhibit the growth of biofoulings. The effectiveness of the treatment is related to the penetration depth of the nanoparticles in the limestone pore. For this reason, LIBS depth profiling was used in this work to characterize the diffusion of the nanoparticles in the limestone matrix and to compare the penetration depth of the different treatments. Four different nano-biocides based on silver/titanium dioxide nanopar- ticles were analysed by LIBS in limestone from Novelda quarry (Alicante, Spain). This limestone has been widely employed in both historical and contemporary buildings in Spain. The positive detection of the emission line of Ag at 338.289 nm was examined in the depth-related emission spectra as evidence of the presence of the silver nanoparticles and derived nanocomposites in the limestone matrix. The LIBS depth-profiles that were generated, showed a decrease of the Ag net signal with depth due to the diffusion of the nanoparticles in the limestone. Furthermore, the comparison of the in-depth sequences of spectra, and of the Ag depth profiles evidenced penetration differences between the nano-biocides which were explained by differences in the hydrodynamic diameter of the nanoparti- cles that would affect their diffusion in the limestone pore. The results of this assessment demonstrate the capability and potential of LIBS technique for the in-depth characterization of the nanoparticles and for the comparison of the effectiveness of nanoparticles biocidal treatments based on their penetration in the stone matrix

Applications of bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) in the study of body composition in athletes

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThe study of body composition (BC) allows evaluating nutritional status, optimizing competitive performance, and monitoring the success of training regimens in athletes. Since BC reference techniques are expensive and/or invasive, in practice simpler, less expensive, and safer methods such as anthropometry are often used. The problem is that anthropometry requires a qualified anthropometrist, a rigorous measurement protocol using validated equipment, and a lengthy procedure because of its limited accuracy. Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) is an indirect method for estimating BC in a simple, fast, inexpensive, noninvasive, accurate, and reproducible manner. Despite the limitations of conventional BIA, it is still the most commonly used method for assessing BC in athletes. However, bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) allows qualitative assessment of body cell mass (BCM) and hydration status without the need for biological assumptions and without being subject to conventional BIA errors. The purpose of this article was to demonstrate the uses and applications of BIA in the study of the BC and physical characteristics of athletes. For example, several practical cases of athletes from different sports were compared. The results obtained from somatotype studies, conventional BIA, and BIVA were included. BIVA interpretation and somatotype were consistent for all cases analyzed, but BIVA also provided information about hydration and BCM. The application of BIVA in the assessment of athletes can improve BC studies in sports because it is fast, simple, and reliable and neither imposes two-compartment-model limitations on BC estimation nor requires any biological assumptions

Specific bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) is more accurate than classic BIVA to detect changes in body composition and in nutritional status in institutionalised elderly with dementia

A new analytical variation of bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA), called specific BIVA, has shown to be more accurate in detecting changes in fat mass than classic BIVA.To compare classic and specific BIVA in order to identify which is more strongly associated with psycho-functional and nutritional indicators in a group of institutionalised elderly patients with dementia.Cross-sectional study. Fifty-four patients (34 women, 20 men) with dementia in moderately severe to very severe stages and aged 60–95years underwent geriatric nutritional assessment, including body mass index calculations, the Mini Nutritional Assessment, the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index, and whole body composition analysis. With specific BIVA (unlike with classic BIVA), significant differences were found between women with moderately severe and very severe dementia. In the BIVA conducted for body mass index, the confidence ellipses produced with the classic BIVA approach were highly overlapping; but with specific BIVA, significant differences were observed between the women in different nutritional categories (malnutrition, risk of malnutrition, normal weight and obesity). On the other hand, both approaches distinguished malnourished women from those who were at risk of malnutrition, according to the Mini Nutritional Assessment; and men with a moderate-high risk of malnutrition from men with no risk, on the basis of the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index.Overall, the findings of the present study suggest that specific BIVA is more effective than classic BIVA in identifying bioelectrical changes associated with psycho-functional and nutritional indicators in institutionalised elderly with dementia
