Audio subtitling : dubbing and voice-over effects and their impact on user experience

    Get PDF
This article reports the outcome of an experiment in which 42 Spanish blind and partially sighted participants were exposed to two diverging audio subtitling strategies: audio subtitles with a voice-over effect and audio subtitles with a dubbing effect. Data on the users' emotional responses were collected through a tactile and simplified version of the SAM questionnaire and psychophysiological recordings of electrodermal activity and heart rate. The results obtained from both methods do not show statistically significant differences between the two effects. However, results from the questionnaire proved that emotions were induced in the participants calling for more research on the topic and with the application of such methods

Inferior alveolar nerve block anesthesia via the retromolar triangle, an alternative for patients with blood dyscrasias

One of the most commonly used mandibular anesthesia techniques is the Spix technique, which is very useful in clinical practice, but is risky when the patient is a bearer of blood dyscrasias. Objective: The aim of this study was to present an alternative to the Spix technique in order to achieve troncular anesthesia of the inferior alveolar nerve. To this purpose, an infiltrative technique was designed to anesthetize the inferior alveolar nerve via the retromolar triangle. Study Design: This study included 40 patients with an average age of 23.65 years, 22 males and 18 females, who were previously evaluated with a vitalometer control, then subjected to the designed anesthetic technique. The effectiveness of the technique used to anesthetize the inferior alveolar nerve was evaluated by the results of tests using a vitalometer applied to a molar and a premolar on the anesthetized side after 5, 10 and 15 minutes. Moreover, the anesthesia was evaluated in mucosa innervated regions by the inferior alveolar, lingual and buccal nerves, and by having the patient relate the duration of the induced feeling of numbness. Results: The technique proved to be effective in 72.5% of the cases, with a latency of 10 minutes and an average duration of the anesthetic effect for 141.125 minutes. Moreover, anesthesia was obtained in the mucosa innervated regions by the inferior alveolar nerve in 72.5% of the cases, by the buccal nerve in 27.5% and in the innervated areas by the lingual nerve in 55% of the cases. Conclusions: The proposed technique, even when it proved to be less effective than the Spix technique, can be seen as a lower risk alternative for patients carrying blood dyscrasias and being subjected to dental procedures in mandibular teeth

Oral metastasis of renal cell carcinoma : presentation of a case

    Get PDF
The oral cavity constitutes a site of low prevalence for metastasis of malignant tumors. Nevertheless, it has a high prevalence for metastasis of renal origin. Besides the kidneys, there are other primary sites with high prevalence of metastasis to the oral mucosa, such as the lungs, skin and breasts. Metastasis is common in patients with a background of treated renal tumors, thereby, it is proper to determine the possibility of oral metastasis as part of the protocol of attention. However, it constitutes a diagnostic challenge when it presents in patients with no renal antecedents. It is in this type of patients that the diagnosis of carcinoma is achieved by means of a metastasis. Survival rate in these patients is short because at the time of the metastasis diagnosis, the general compromise is high. The following report describes a case referred from the Rheumatology Unit with an intraoral tumor, that was finally diagnosed as a Metastasic Renal Cell Carcinoma with multiple metastasis

Beckwith Wiedemann Syndrome : presentation of a case report

    Get PDF
Beckwith Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS) is a rare congenital disease of low prevalence. However, it presents a high prevalence within the genetic pathologies of overgrowth. This syndrome presents typical manifestations such as macroglossia, macrosomy at birth, omphalocele and defects of the anterior abdominal wall. Its origin is known to be genetic, but its mechanism of generation is not clear. This syndrome has been the object of wide studies since investigators have established a relationship between the methods of assisted fertilization (assisted reproduction treatment, ART) and its appearance. Currently, research is oriented towards the improvement of the prenatal diagnostic techniques, which would allow a preparation of the multidisciplinary medical team to treat the pathologies with which these patients are born. Next we present the case of a 1 year-old child who consults this service with a diagnosis of macroglossia associated with BWS

La ópera accesible del siglo XXI: nuevos servicios, nuevas posibilidades

This article describes the challenges faced by a team of audio describers to take existing access services at Liceu Opera House in Barcelona to a new level by offering more access services, more features to personalise, and in various languages. The first part of the article will describe Liceu existing access services. The second part will analyse, on the basis of tests with end users performed in 2014 and 2015 by UAB and RNIB, the possibilities offered by wireless connections and the many challenges of the new mobile opportunities.

    Get PDF
Bloody discharge from the nipple (thelorrhagia) is a rare symptom in childhood and is a cause of great concern due to the association with carcinoma in adults. The most common cause in children is mammary duct ectasia, which is a benign and self-limiting condition. It is characterized by dilatation of the mammary ducts, fibrosis and periductal inflammation. The etiology has not been identified and is multifactorial. Up to date, only isolated case reports have been published. Therefore, we present a review of the literature and we report a case of a fivemonth- old male infant that resolves spontaneously. We aimed to improve physicians'' diagnosis accuracy, the knowledge of this condition and to avoid aggressive studies and treatments

Electrodermal activity as a measure of emotions in media accessibility research : methodological considerations

    Get PDF
This article proposes electrodermal activity (EDA) as a new objective measure for experimental studies in media accessibility. It first presents a theoretical framework in which the concept of emotion and its categorisation are presented. It then explains how EDA can be used to measure emotional reaction: the article reports on experimental design, participant selection, stimuli preparation, data collection devices, experimental procedure and data analysis. It also discusses briefly how EDA can be combined with other measures. Overall, the article provides a general methodological framework for the implementation of electrodermal activity as a measure of emotions in media accessibility researc
