The Failure of the Aetolian Deditio as a Didactic Cultural Clash in the Histories of Polybius (20.9-10)

This paper examines the Aetolian deditio in fidem of 191 as described by Polybius 20.9-10. Erich Gruen influentially interpreted Polybius’ description as inconsistent and exaggerated, on the grounds that Greeks and Romans from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC had a common understanding of πίστις and fides and that Polybius’ own evidence on deditio was inconsistent. This paper reasserts the older view: that Greeks generally then had a hazy knowledge of Roman culture, including the practice of deditio, and that—even if weight be granted to factors such as the Roman commander’s personal character and ambitions or the historian’s supposed dislike of the Aetolians or his deployment of a degree of dramatic licence or a possible ‘hardening’ in the Romans’ general practice—this passage properly emphasises a genuine cultural clash, thereby promoting Polybius’ fundamental paideia-objective of teaching Greek readers, above all Greek politicians, how to respond competently to the realities of Roman power.Fil: Moreno Leoni, Álvaro Matías. A politician is writing the history: Sources, competence and authority in the Histories of Polybius

    Get PDF
The current article intends to analyze the problem of the construction of competence and authority in the Histories of Polybius. In this way, this Greek historian postulates the necessity for any pragmatic history to use some kinds of sources especially, and we analyse this selection of sources in order to connect this option with the construction of competence and authority by this Greek historian. The autopsía and autopátheia, as historical sources, are defended by a politician with military and political experience who is writing the history.Fil: Moreno Leoni, Álvaro Matías. Dilogarithm ladders from Wilson loops

    Get PDF
We consider a light-like Wilson loop in N = 4 SYM evaluated on a regular n-polygon contour. Sending the number of edges to infinity the polygon approximates a circle and the expectation value of the light-like WL is expected to tend to the localization result for the circular one. We show this explicitly at one loop, providing a prescription to deal with the divergences of the light-like WL and the large n limit. Taking this limit entails evaluating certain sums of dilogarithms which, for a regular polygon, evaluate to the same constant independently of n. We show that this occurs thanks to underlying dilogarithm identities, related to the so-called “polylogarithm ladders”, which appear in rather different contexts of physics and mathematics and enable us to perform the large n limit analytically.Instituto de Física La Plat

Current-current deformations, conformal integrals and correlation functions

Motivated by the recent work on TT¯ -type deformations of 2D CFTs, a especial class of single-trace deformations of AdS3/CFT2 correspondence has been investigated. From the worldsheet perspective, this corresponds to a marginal deformation of the σ - model on AdS3 that yields a string background that interpolates between AdS3 and a flat linear dilaton solution. Here, with the intention of studying this worldsheet CFT further, we consider it in the presence of a boundary. In a previous paper, we computed different correlation functions of this theory on the disk, including the bulk 1-point function, the boundary-boundary 2-point function, and the bulk-boundary 2-point function. This led us to compute the anomalous dimension of both bulk and boundary vertex operators, which first required a proper regularization of the ultraviolet divergences of the conformal integrals. Here, we extend the analysis by computing the bulk-bulk 2-point function on the disk and other observables on the sphere. We prove that the renormalization of the vertex operators proposed in our previous works is consistent with the form of the sphere N -point functions.Fil: Giribet, Gaston Enrique. ABJM amplitudes and WL at finite N

    Get PDF
We evaluate ABJM observables at two loops, for any value of the rank N of the gauge group. We compute the color subleading contributions to the four-point scattering amplitude in ABJM at two loops. Contrary to the four dimensional case, IR divergent N-subleading contributions are proportional to leading poles in the regularization parameter. We then exploit the non-planar calculation for the amplitude to derive an expression for the two-loop Sudakov form factor at any N. In the planar limit the result coincides with the one recently obtained in literature by using Feynman diagrams and unitarity. Finally, we analyze the subleading contributions to the light-like four-cusps Wilson loop and interpret the result in terms of the non-abelian exponentiation theorem. All these perturbative results satisfy the uniform transcendentality principle, hinting at its validity in ABJM beyond the planar limit.Fil: Bianchi, Marco. Power and Sexual Violence against Women: Models of Hegemony and Didactics in The Histories of Polybius

This paper deals with sexual violence against women in Polybius’ Histories. Modern scholarship on the subject is scarce and has not addressed this issue. Though women did not play a central role in the narrated deeds in the work, some passages seem to relate women’s rape to concrete political and didactic reflexions. Here, it is argued that Polybius consciously explored the consequences of the degradation of alliances between states and its transformation from equality to tyrannical rule by using an explicit sexual metaphor. In that sense, the examples of Philip V of Macedon, the Carthaginians in Iberia, and Scipio Africanus are studied.Fil: Moreno Leoni, Álvaro Matías. Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto. Interpreting Roman world: rhetoric of otherness, audience and greek culture in the histories of Polybius

Scholars have often undervalued the problem of cultural contact in the Histories of Polybius, reducing the scope of this kind of approach only to the description of Barbarian peoples. It has even been argued that the historian had some inability to inquire about Rome as an object of cultural reflection resulting from a process of acculturation experienced by him in that city during his stay there. The purpose of this paper is to reconsider these ideas through an exploration of certain discursive devices that reveal us a complex cultural operation aimed at bringing the narrated world into the world where it is narrated.Fil: Moreno Leoni, Álvaro Matías.
