Another extension of the disc algebra
We identify the complex plane C with the open unit disc D={z:|z|<1} by the
homeomorphism z --> z/(1+|z|). This leads to a compactification of C,
homeomorphic to the closed unit disc. The Euclidean metric on the closed unit
disc induces a metric d on . We identify all uniform limits of
polynomials on with respect to the metric d. The class of the above
limits is an extension of the disc algebra and it is denoted by .
We study properties of the elements of and topological properties
of the class endowed with its natural topology. The class
is different and, from the geometric point of view, richer than
the class introduced in Nestoridis (2010), Arxiv:1009.5364, on

Test of nuclear level density inputs for Hauser-Feshbach model calculations
The energy spectra of neutrons, protons, and alpha-particles have been
measured from the d+59Co and 3He+58Fe reactions leading to the same compound
nucleus, 61$Ni. The experimental cross sections have been compared to
Hauser-Feshbach model calculations using different input level density models.
None of them have been found to agree with experiment. It manifests the serious
problem with available level density parameterizations especially those based
on neutron resonance spacings and density of discrete levels. New level
densities and corresponding Fermi-gas parameters have been obtained for
reaction product nuclei such as 60Ni,60Co, and 57Fe

Subaru Suprime-Cam Weak Lensing Survey over 33 deg^2
Under the currently popular CDM model, mass plays the major role in evolution of large scale structure of the universe. In order to examine the paradigm based on observations, it ould be ideal to use purely mass selected object catalog. Weak lensing surveys enable a blind search of cluster scale objects, and thus could provide such catalogs. We are working on a weak lensing survey using Subaru Prime Focus Camera (Suprime-Cam). In this note, we introduce our survey strategy, and the status as well as the performance of Suprime-Cam as a weak lensing surveyor
The 'regional problem' and the spatial grammar of British politics
One of the most persistent characteristics of the geography of Britain is the wide inequality that exists between its constituent regions. It is an inequality which has come to be known as the North-South divide, but this is a gestural term that refers to a geography which has in fact varied in detail and in form over at least the last two centuries. In the present period, in spite of many stated intentions and much government rhetoric to the contrary, it has on many measures grown considerably worse. This pamphlet argues that it will continue to do so unless there is a more serious engagement with the power dynamics that underlie this fundamentally unequal and undemocratic geography: dynamics that continue to return London and the South East as the centre of the nation. In the absence of both a systematic attack on the spatial concentration of power, and a radical re-imagination of the nature of regions in an age of geographical connectivity and flow, the concessions on offer in the current debate on devolution and region-building will amount to little more than a pin-prick in tackling the alarming regional inequality and political centrism that currently exists in Britain

A scaling law for the recirculation zone length behind a bluff body in reacting flows
The recirculation zone length behind a bluff body is influenced by the turbulence intensity at the base of the body in isothermal flows and also the heat release and its interaction with turbulence in reacting flows. This relationship is observed to be nonlinear and is controlled by the balance of forces acting on the recirculation zone, which arise from the pressure and turbulence fields. The pressure force is directly influenced by the volumetric expansion resulting from the heat release, whereas the change in the turbulent shear force depends on the nonlinear interaction between turbulence and combustion. This behaviour is elucidated through a control volume analysis. A scaling relation for the recirculation zone length is deduced to relate the turbulence intensity and the amount of heat release. This relation is verified using the large eddy simulation data from 20 computations of isothermal flows and premixed flames that are stabilised behind the bluff body. The application of this scaling to flames in an open environment and behind a backward facing step is also explored.
