    Effects of Bonds & Fed Funds on the Stock Market

    This paper is to investigate the relationship that Treasury bonds and Fed Funds have with the stock market. This research is valuable because the stock market is a major aspect of America’s economy, although many consider it unpredictable and difficult to understand. The goal of our research is to lessen this unpredictability, as well as to assess the inverse relationship that hypothetically exists between the stock market, bonds and Fed Funds. By employing an OLS regression model, this study finds the effect of Fed Funds is statistically and economically significant with regard to the stock market, also having the predicted inverse relationship. However, results for bonds are inconclusive; they are neither statistically or economically significant, nor do they consistently have an inverse relationship with stocks. Nevertheless, this paper can begin to show the hypothetical relationship that exists between stock and bond markets, and provide a basis for future research

    Immunization communication in ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’: Inoculation theory, health messaging, and children’s entertainment television

    Entertainment education research has shown that television programs can communicate important health information to television viewers. Much of this research focuses on mass media effects (e.g., behavioral intention of viewers, post-viewing; attitudinal change, post-viewing). Less is known about the rhetorical strategies employed in such messaging. We review para-social and para-proxemics literature to describe the viewing context and then offer a detailed rhetorical analysis of immunization messaging on the children’s television program, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” arguing that, aptly, Fred Rogers’ rhetorical framing mirrored that of the inoculation theory of resistance to influence, presenting “weak” challenges to his young viewers to help them to build resistance to stronger challenges encountered later.     Outbreak Communication: Exploring the Relationships between Health Information Seeking Behaviors, Vested Interests, and COVID-19 Knowledge in U.S. Midwest Populations

    On February 15, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director, General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated at a Munich Security Conference, “We’re not just fighting an epidemic; we’re fighting an infodemic,” (Zarocostas, 2020, p. 676). The term ‘infodemic’ refers to the onslaught of both accurate and inaccurate health information surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. The concept of an ‘infodemic’ was quickly integrated into mass media, popular culture (i.e., documentaries, podcasts), and eventually scholarly literature. In response to COVID-19, health communication scholars have centered on understanding specific messaging strategies such as the use of fear appeals (Stolow et al., 2020), nature of advertising narratives (Deng et al., 2022), the impact of visual health communication messages such as comics (Kearns & Kearns, 2020), the inclusiveness and accessibility of COVID-related health information (e.g., readability ) (Basch et al., 2020; Goggin & Ellis, 2020), as well as other message features and content attributes. Scholarly efforts have also explored the impacts of the specific sources of COVID-19 messages (Carico et al., 2021; Ju et al., 2023) and popular distribution channels such as social and mass media (Lwin, 2020; Meppelink, 2022). The effects of these messages and sources about COVID-19 have been studied in relation to a variety of health-related attitudes (i.e., public trust, vaccine hesitation, vaccine confidence) (Chou, & Budenz, 2020; Paek & Hove, 2020; Thaker, 2021) and health related-behaviors (i.e., vaccine uptake) (MacPherson, 2020)

    Analyzing the Prophylactic and Therapeutic Role of Inoculation to Facilitate Resistance to Conspiracy Theory Beliefs

    Conspiracy theories pose a variety of social and psychological consequences for individuals and society, and research suggests that around half of the U.S. population believes at least one. A two-phase inoculation experiment was conducted. Inoculated participants reported more negative general attitudes toward conspiracy theories and lower Phase II generic conspiracist beliefs, which are both indicators of harm-reduction and the beneficial healing impacts of therapeutic inoculation. The addition of therapeutic inoculation as a harm-reduction or healing technique in practitioners’ stakeholder response toolkit is a valuable contribution to both theory and practice

    Archeological Of The Proposed FM 1626 Pass-Through Toll Project From Ranch-To-Market 967 To Farm-To-Market 2770 In Hays County, Texas

    Hicks & Company archeologists conducted an intensive, 100-percent linear archeological survey of approximately 3.3 miles of proposed expansions to Farm-to-Market (FM) 1626 west of the city of Buda, Hays County, Texas. The survey was conducted between July 2008 and October 2016 for compliance with the Antiquities Code of Texas and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act on behalf of Hays County, the project engineer Klotz Associates, and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The Area of Potential Effects (APE) for the proposed project is composed of 54.3 acres of existing right of way and 8.08 acres of proposed expanded right of way (measuring 62.38 acres of existing plus proposed expanded right of way), and approximately 1.07 acres of temporary construction easements located outside of the existing or proposed right of way. While the proposed expanded right of way corridor has been determined, the project engineer requested that a 200-foot-wide corridor be investigated (extending 100 feet in either direction from the existing centerline) to allow for flexibility in road design, potential utility relocation, and other possible areas of concern, resulting in a total of approximately 81 acres of land surveyed. Investigations were coordinated with the Texas Historical Commission through TxDOT under Texas Antiquities Committee Permit Number 4981. On three occasions between July 28, 2008, and August 10, 2009 Hicks & Company archeologists conducted an intensive linear archeological survey of the proposed FM 1626 improvements project west of the city of Buda, Texas, on behalf of Hays County and TxDOT, returning to the field on January 21, 2016 to survey for proposed temporary construction easements located outside of the existing right of way or proposed new right of way, and again on October 26, 2016 to survey proposed new right of way in previously inaccessible parcels, completing the survey. The survey consisted of pedestrian inspection supplemented by shovel testing (N=102) and mechanical backhoe trench excavations (N=7) in the area north of Onion Creek. One backhoe trench excavated on the north bank of Onion Creek was positive for two pieces of lithic debitage, along with 32 shovel tests throughout the APE that were positive for cultural materials. One previously unrecorded site (Site 41HY449) was documented during the survey. This prehistoric surficial scatter does not meet the significance criteria for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) or as a State Antiquities Landmark (SAL). In addition to this newly recorded site, archeologists visited elements of seven previously recorded sites (Sites 41HY199-202, 41HY209-210, and 41HY219) within the APE. Elements of one of these, Site 41HY200, could not be found within the archeological APE. Of these, only elements of Site 41HY201 are considered to have potential to deem the site eligible for inclusion on the NRHP or for designation as an SAL. The project engineer has altered plans in the vicinity of the site to avoid impacts to those resources. All other sites were found to be heavily disturbed, no longer extant, or within shallow surficial contexts atop bedrock with limited research value. Archeologists also visited the expansion areas adjacent to historic Barton Cemetery. Although the cemetery lies in close proximity to the APE, the County proposes no expansions in the immediate vicinity of the cemetery beyond a proposed retaining wall with riprap slope within the existing right of way outside the cemetery. This retaining wall is to be constructed approximately ten feet within current existing right of way. By design, retaining walls planned for this project will be fixed in place to concrete leveling pads set in place on top of the current grade and supported by earth reinforcement buildup of imported fill material. During survey, an overgrown road or trail that follows the current cemetery fenceline reinforces the assumption that the existing cemetery boundary served as the historic boundary as well, significantly reducing the potential for unmarked burials to be located within the current archeological APE. Construction within the APE is recommended to proceed with no further cultural resources investigation. The current investigations followed a no-collection policy. All projectrelated records, forms, and photographs will be permanently housed at the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory in Austin, Texas

    This study aims to understand the general web accessibility of digital information networks which may serve as barriers for access to the global discipline of Communication through institutional and departmental websites, specifically for persons with disabilities and those with limited English proficiency (LEP). Our exploratory content analysis relies on computer-aided software to systematically analyze the departmental home pages of websites of institutional members of the International Communication Association (ICA), N = 77, representing 26 countries, globally. Findings from this study help us to: (1) better understand the general web, language, and mobile accessibility of discipline-related online information; (2) identify strengths and opportunities for improvement; and, (3) to reflect upon the anticipated barriers impacting persons with disabilities when accessing higher education information online

    Prostate Stereotactic Ablative Radiation Therapy Using Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy to Dominant Intraprostatic Lesions

    PurposeTo investigate boosting dominant intraprostatic lesions (DILs) in the context of stereotactic ablative radiation therapy (SABR) and to examine the impact on tumor control probability (TCP) and normal tissue complication probability (NTCP).Methods and MaterialsTen prostate datasets were selected. DILs were defined using T2-weighted, dynamic contrast-enhanced and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Four plans were produced for each dataset: (1) no boost to DILs; (2) boost to DILs, no seminal vesicles in prescription; (3) boost to DILs, proximal seminal vesicles (proxSV) prescribed intermediate dose; and (4) boost to DILs, proxSV prescribed higher dose. The prostate planning target volume (PTV) prescription was 42.7 Gy in 7 fractions. DILs were initially prescribed 115% of the PTVProstate prescription, and PTVDIL prescriptions were increased in 5% increments until organ-at-risk constraints were reached. TCP and NTCP calculations used the LQ-Poisson Marsden, and Lyman-Kutcher-Burman models respectively.ResultsWhen treating the prostate alone, the median PTVDIL prescription was 125% (range: 110%-140%) of the PTVProstate prescription. Median PTVDIL D50% was 55.1 Gy (range: 49.6-62.6 Gy). The same PTVDIL prescriptions and similar PTVDIL median doses were possible when including the proxSV within the prescription. TCP depended on prostate α/ÎČ ratio and was highest with an α/ÎČ ratio = 1.5 Gy, where the additional TCP benefit of DIL boosting was least. Rectal NTCP increased with DIL boosting and was considered unacceptably high in 5 cases, which, when replanned with an emphasis on reducing maximum dose to 0.5 cm3 of rectum (Dmax0.5cc), as well as meeting existing constraints, resulted in considerable rectal NTCP reductions.ConclusionsBoosting DILs in the context of SABR is technically feasible but should be approached with caution. If this therapy is adopted, strict rectal constraints are required including Dmax0.5cc. If the α/ÎČ ratio of prostate cancer is 1.5 Gy or less, then high TCP and low NTCP can be achieved by prescribing SABR to the whole prostate, without the need for DIL boosting
