Conditional stability of unstable viscous shock waves in compressible gas dynamics and MHD

Extending our previous work in the strictly parabolic case, we show that a linearly unstable Lax-type viscous shock solution of a general quasilinear hyperbolic--parabolic system of conservation laws possesses a translation-invariant center stable manifold within which it is nonlinearly orbitally stable with respect to small L1∩H3L^1\cap H^3 perturbations, converging time-asymptotically to a translate of the unperturbed wave. That is, for a shock with pp unstable eigenvalues, we establish conditional stability on a codimension-pp manifold of initial data, with sharp rates of decay in all LpL^p. For p=0p=0, we recover the result of unconditional stability obtained by Mascia and Zumbrun. The main new difficulty in the hyperbolic--parabolic case is to construct an invariant manifold in the absence of parabolic smoothing.Comment: 32p

How Much Can We Trust Major Element Quantification in Bioapatite Investigation?

    Get PDF
Bioapatite is probably the key factor in the unreplicated success of vertebrates. Chemical data on bioapatite composition can be achieved on a solid sample by using different analytical tools such as spectroscopic and spectrometric methods. As analytical outputs can be affected by the physical-chemical characteristics of the sample matrix, an internal standard is usually required to correct and validate the results. Bioapatite lattice can accommodate iso- and heterovalent substitutions during life or diagenesis varying its chemical composition through (geological) time. If on the one hand, this makes bioapatite a unique archive of physical and chemical information for both the living cycle and the events occurring after death, on the other, it excludes the identification of a sole internal standard. Here, we propose a method to measure major element concentration with specific care for P, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Si, Al, and Fe, which are the main substituent atoms in bioapatite, through homemade matrix-matched external calibration standards for laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). We tested the method on living and fossil shark teeth, critically comparing the results obtained using other analytical techniques and certified external standards. We demonstrated that matrix-matched calibration in LA-ICPMS is mandatory for obtaining a reliable chemical characterization even if factors such as matrix aggregation variability, diverse presence of volatile compounds, the fossilization footprint, and the instrumental variability can represent further variability parameters

Submicrometer-Channel Organic Transistors with MHz Operation Range on Flexible Substrates by a Low-Resolution Fabrication Technique

    Get PDF
In this paper, the development of a simple and reproducible approach for the fabrication of n-type organic field-effect transistors with a 350 nm-long channel on flexible substrates is reported. The critical feature of the device, the channel length, is obtained using a self-alignment process that exploits the vertical step of a plasma-etched thin Parylene C layer, according to the so-called step-edge architecture. The fabricated devices can operate in continuous mode and show an average and maximum transition frequency of 2.5 MHz and 5.5 MHz, respectively. The possibility of easily obtaining high-performing, short channel organic transistors on flexible substrates, without the use of expensive and high-resolution techniques, represents an interesting step toward the miniaturization of flexible circuits in the field of large-area organic electronics

Existence and stability of viscoelastic shock profiles

We investigate existence and stability of viscoelastic shock profiles for a class of planar models including the incompressible shear case studied by Antman and Malek-Madani. We establish that the resulting equations fall into the class of symmetrizable hyperbolic--parabolic systems, hence spectral stability implies linearized and nonlinear stability with sharp rates of decay. The new contributions are treatment of the compressible case, formulation of a rigorous nonlinear stability theory, including verification of stability of small-amplitude Lax shocks, and the systematic incorporation in our investigations of numerical Evans function computations determining stability of large-amplitude and or nonclassical type shock profiles.Comment: 43 pages, 12 figure

Off-target effects and clinical outcome in metastatic colorectal cancer patients receiving regorafenib: The TRIBUTE analysis

    Get PDF
Regorafenib is an orally administered multikinase inhibitor indicated for the treatment of heavily pretreated metastatic colorectal cancer patients with good performance status, albeit less than 50% treated patients achieve disease stabilisation or better at the first radiological evaluation. In addition to that a particularly broad spectrum of toxicities (experienced as G3 or more NCI CTCAE graded by 50% of patients treated) have led to reconsider its widespread use in the majority of patients. We retrospectively collected data about the magnitude of off-target effects experienced during the first 8-weeks of regorafenib monotherapy and analysed their correlation with overall survival, progression free survival and disease control rate. Our findings suggest that skin rash (Exp (B): 0.52, p = 0.0133) or hypothyroidism (Exp (B): 0.11, p = 0.0349) were significantly correlated with improved overall survival at multivariate regression analysis. It was also demonstrated a statistically significant role of diarrhea as predictor of improved survival but its independent prognostic role was lost at multivariate analysis (Exp (B): 0.63, p = 0.162). This is the first analysis showing a potential correlation between the onset of these forms of side effects and regorafenib efficacy, however sample size limitations and the retrospective nature of our analysis prevent us from drawing definitive conclusion

Don't stand so close to me: Competitive pressures, proximity and inter-organizational collaboration

    Get PDF
This paper investigates how geographical proximity moderates the nonmonotonic relation between niche overlap and the propensity of organizations to collaborate. The main prediction is that the strength of this relation is different for organizations with low versus high levels of geographical proximity. Proposed hypotheses are tested by using data collected within a community of hospital organizations serving more than five million residents in one of the largest Italian geographical regions. After controlling for internal resource complementarities and differences in organizational forms, behavioural orientations and institutional constraints among hospitals, this paper finds strong empirical support to the research hypotheses

Pulmonary function and CT scan imaging at low-level occupational exposureto asbestos

    Get PDF
Background: In spite of the reduced exposure level, and its ban in numerous countries, compensation claims for asbestos-related diseases are far from decreasing. Methods: We used retrospective exposure assessment techniques to explore respiratory function and a computerized tomography (CT) scan in relation to past asbestos exposure in 115 male workers retired from an acrylic and polyester fiber plant. Based, on detailed information on exposure circumstances, we reconstructed a cumulative exposure estimate for each patient. Results: Time-weighted average exposure in our study population was 0.24 fibers/ml (95% confidence inteval (CI) 0.19–0.29), and the average cumulative exposure was 4.51 fibers/mL-years (95% CI 3.95–5.07). Exposure was elevated among maintenance workers, compared to other jobs (p = 0.00001). Respiratory function parameters did not vary in relation to the exposure estimates, nor to CT scan results. Risk of interstitial fibrosis showed a significant upward trend (Wald test for trend = 2.62, p = 0.009) with cumulative exposure to asbestos; risk associated with 5.26 fibers/mL-years or more, was 8-fold (95% CI 1.18–54.5). Conclusions: Our results suggest that a CT scan can detect pleuro-parenchymal lung alterations at asbestos exposure levels lower than previously thought, in absence of respiratory impairment. Further studies are required to validate our techniques of retrospective assessment of asbestos exposure

    Early results from GLASS-JWST. X: Rest-frame UV-optical properties of galaxies at 7 < z < 9

We present the first James Webb Space Telescope/NIRCam-led determination of 7<z<97<z<9 galaxy properties based on broadband imaging from 0.8 to 5 microns as part of the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science program. This is the deepest dataset acquired at these wavelengths to date, with an angular resolution ≲0.14\lesssim0.14 arcsec. We robustly identify 14 galaxies with S/N>8 in F444W from 8 arcmin2^2 of data at mAB≤28m_{AB}\leq 28 from a combination of dropout and photometric redshift selection. From simulated data modeling, we estimate the dropout sample purity to be ≳90%\gtrsim90\%. We find that the number density of these sources is broadly consistent with expectations from the UV luminosity function determined from Hubble Space Telescope data. We characterize galaxy physical properties using a Bayesian Spectral Energy Distribution fitting method, finding median stellar mass 108.7M⊙10^{8.7}M_\odot and age 130 Myr, indicating they started ionizing their surroundings at redshift z>9.5z>9.5. Their star formation main sequence is consistent with predictions from simulations. Lastly, we introduce an analytical framework to constrain main-sequence evolution at z>7z>7 based on galaxy ages and basic assumptions, through which we find results consistent with expectations from cosmological simulations. While this work only gives a glimpse of the properties of typical galaxies that are thought to drive the reionization of the universe, it clearly shows the potential of JWST to unveil unprecedented details on galaxy formation in the first billion years.Comment: Submitted to ApJL. 12 pages, 3 Figure

Managing local supplier networks: conflict or compromise

    Get PDF
This paper examines conflict management in small firm networks. Informal conflict management strategies used in exchange relationships are identified and analysed. In-depth, semi-structured interviews with 22 small and medium-sized enterprise managers in an industrial district in the south-east of France are analysed. Results point to managers adopting accommodating behaviours in conflicts with clients and compromising and collaborative strategies with local partners. This research reveals the mobilization of local norms in the management of conflicts and also contributes to research concerning coopetition and the possibility that managers of small firms may both separate and integrate coopetition activities
