From Memory to Present to an Uncertain Future: An Analysis of History and Policy on Chinese Food Security

    Get PDF
This paper seeks to analyze China’s historical relationship to famine to better understand contemporary Chinese policy on food security. The historical analysis focuses both at the political level and the level of the peasantry, with a particular focus on the Great Chinese Famine. This Chinese specific analysis in conjunction with an understanding of food security history helps to better understand two white papers on food security from the Chinese Government in 1996 and 2019. This paper finds these white papers to be response to deep rooted doubts in the ability for the Chinese Government to logistically support such a massive population. These doubts are informed partly because of the remembered suffering of the Great Famine. The white paper’s themselves respond to contemporary political issues and understand the future hardships agriculture will face. However, they lack a clearly defined plan in the event of a massive crop failure and what measures will be taken in such an event. Future research on China’s food security must be done in Mandarin, particularly if there are any plans in the concluded shortcoming

The Chinese Communist Party and the Uyghurs: Securitization and How Ethnic Minorities are Oppressed in an Multi-Ethnic State

    Get PDF
Since the beginning of the War on Terror in 2001, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has convinced its own populace as well as foreign countries that increasing security measures in the Xinjiang region are necessary. In 2014, in response to terror attacks, the Chinese Government announced the “Strike Hard Campaign Against Violent Terrorism” aimed at the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and more specifically the Uyghur ethnic minority. This paper will analyze the oppression of the Uyghurs in China through securitization theory and the political and ethnic theories to construct a better understanding of how large multi-ethnic states legitimize oppressing minority groups within their own country. The findings are that through a combination of Han-ethnocentrism, internal political control and the redefinition of Uyghur resistance to cultural assimilation as a security issue of “Islamic extremism” the CCP can justify the incarceration and indoctrination of the Uyghurs. The international Community despite its acknowledgement of human rights abuses is ill equipped to confront ethnic oppression by big states such as China due to a lack of appropriate legal structures, concepts and definitions on the international level

Assessing the dimensional stability of alkali-activated calcined clays in the fresh state: a time-lapse X-ray imaging approach

    Get PDF
Alkali-activated calcined clays are promising candidates for playing a prominent role in the future construction industry. These binders may achieve excellent mechanical performance, but one issue deserving attention is the proneness to plastic shrinkage and surface cracking. Tackling this issue requires the deployment of laboratory techniques that allow shrinkage-inducing mechanisms to be quantitatively assessed. Here, we demonstrate that time-lapse X-ray imaging can be used to quantify shrinkage immediately after mixing, when the binder is still in its fresh state, with excellent time and space resolution. The numeric quantification of strain is complemented by the real time visual inspection of the displacing sample interface and of the bleed aqueous solution layer that may form. Implementation of this method to a set of alkali-activated cement pastes, prepared by combining calcined clays having different mineralogical composition with sodium silicate activating solutions having different SiO 2/Na 2O ratios, suggests that two main mechanisms control the early dimensional stability of alkali-activated calcined clays. These mechanisms are: (a) volumetric contraction occurring in response to capillary stress arising from water evaporation and (b) segregation by particle settling, favoured in the water-saturated regime

Effect of a spacer moiety on radiometal labelled Neurotensin derivatives

    Get PDF
The binding sequence of the regulatory peptide Neurotensin, NT(8-13), represents apromising tumour-specific vector for the development of radiopeptides useful in nuclear oncology for the diagnosis (imaging) and therapy of cancer. Anumber of radiometal-labelled NT(8-13) derivatives have been reported, however, the effect of the spacer which connects the vector with the radiometal complex has yet not been investigated systematically. Because aspacer moiety can influence potentially important biological characteristics of radiopeptides, we synthesized three [DOTA(177Lu)]-X-NT(8-13) derivatives and evaluated the effect of aspacer (X) on the physico-chemical properties of the conjugate including lipophilicity, stability, and in vitro receptor affinity and cell internalizatio

Lapso: o processo de criação e execução de um curta-metragem ficcional indepedente

    Get PDF

O MIAevocou incapacitação por 5 dias (P Abstract : Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic and gradual disease that affectsthe joints, resulting in soreness and gradual loss of joint function. Many lines of research aimed to experimentally evaluate thenociceptive alterations in such condition, however, they usuallydo not address the main complication that is the articularincapacitation. In the present study OA was induced by twoinjections, 3 days apart, of monosodium iodoacetate (MIA; 3 mg)in the right knee-joint of rats, and the incapacitation wasmeasured by the paw elevation time (TEP; s) in daily sessions of1-min periods of stimulated walk. In parallel, the ipsilateralplantar sensitivity to Von Frey test, and a visual behavioralanalysis of recorded sessions, were also held. MIA evokedincapacitation over 5 days (P < 0.05), accompanied by increasein the joint diameter (DA) while a low threshold response to VonFrey testing persisted for 15 days (P <0.05). The analysis of PETshowed to be sensitive for evaluating classic drugs for thetreatment of OA. A single systemic administration of morphine (3mg / kg) reversed the incapacitation, but intrathecal injection (37nmoles) had a longer lasting effect (P <0.05). Furthermore, systemic administration of diclofenac was able to reverse theincapacitation for approximately 24 hours (10 and 30 mg / kg).None of the treatments were effective in reducing the DA. Theseresults suggest that the incapacitation test can be an effectiveway to evaluate the effects of drugs in this aspect of joint damageevoked by the MIA
