I examined the works of William Carlos Williams, Peter Pereira, Rafael Campo, Tory Dent, Lucia Perillo, and John Rybicki to gain a better understanding of the field of medicine. I selected these authors based upon their varied experiences with illness, disease, and loss. Their prose and poetry illuminate the nature of medicine and provide insight into human nature as well. The thesis has been edited for the SMBHC Thesis Repository to protect the copyright interests of some authors and publishers. The table of contents has been edited to reflect the changes

Television Viewing Habits, Body Mass Index, Dietary Behaviors and Physical Activity Among University Students

    Get PDF
This study examined the relationship between TV-viewing, BMI, dietary behaviors and physical activity in a purposive sample of university students. Twenty-three items from the National College Health Risk Behavior Survey were used. For data analysis, students were placed into dichotomous categories for TV-viewing risk; dichotomous categories were also created for each DV. Chi-square tests examined relationships between demographic and risk-behavior correlates and Ss\u27 self-reports of TV-viewing; subsequent analyses were run for Ss who were normal- and overweight/obese. Odds ratios with 95% CI were also computed. TV-viewing was related to decreased use of diet/exercise to control weight and an increased likelihood of doing physical activity, strengthening, and stretching. For normal-weight Ss, TV-viewing was associated with decreased use of diet/exercise to control weight and increased risk of consuming fatty foods. Overweight/obese Ss at-risk for TV-viewing were more likely to consume fatty foods and less likely to participate in activity, strengthening, or stretching

Estimating the Readability of Primary Books: A Comparative Study of the Formula Method and Subjective Appraisals

This paper surveys research on the factors that influence the readability of primary books, the efforts that have been made to measure it, and the comparative reliability of subjective judgment and objective analysis of the difficulty of certain primary books. An appraisal by the Fry Readability Graph is recommended for a first approximation of the difficulty of a book, to be followed by judgment decisions regarding concepts, interest and other considerations, to make a suitable match of book to child

Agricultural Productivity in the United States

    Get PDF
Increased productivity is a key to a healthy and thriving economy. Consequently, the trend in productivity, economywide, is one of the most closely watched of our common economic performance indicators. Agriculture, in particular, has been a very successful sector of the U.S. economy in terms of productivity growth. The U.S. farm sector has provided an abundance of output while using inputs efficiently. Agricultural productivity growth has been an important source of U.S. economic growth throughout the century, but the years since 1940 have seen an even faster growth in agricultural productivity. The annual average increase in productivity from 1948 to 1994 was 1.94 percent. This reflects an annual growth in output of 1.88 percent per year and an actual decline in agricultural inputs of 0.06 percent per year. This report describes changes in U.S. agricultural productivity, and its output and input components, for 1948-94. The report also discusses factors that have affected productivity trends and provides detailed, technical information about the USDA system for calculating productivity.productivity, efficiency, agricultural production, outputs, inputs, Productivity Analysis,

In Australia, pharmacists have been traditionally involved with vaccine education, advocacy and distribution. An emerging role for pharmacists is the administration of vaccines. As the role of the pharmacist evolves in Australia it is imperative that undergraduate curricula evolve simultaneously to ensure graduate preparedness

Non-parental-type Recombinants in Crosses between Different Restriction-Modification Systems in SALMONELLA

Many new restriction-modification (R-M) system which are closely linked to serB and allelic to the hsdSB system of S. typimurium occur in different Salmonella serotypes. In PI transduction studies with these systems, recombinants were isolated which fell into one of three classes with reference to their specific restriction phenotype. Recombinants that restricted like the donor, recombinants that restricted like the recipient and recombinants that had lost the ability to restrict. This latter group having lost the recipient SB restriction without gaining the specific donor restriction and here called zero recombinants,” were of special interest and were investigated. Zero recombinants were selected from among serB+ recombinants derived from transductions using phage PI, to E. coll/S. typhimurium LT2 hybrids 4662 (SBH+) and 4617 (SA+SB+). Backcrosses of these recombinants to 4662 and 4617 were also done. The modification phenotype of all recombinants was determined. Three different phenotypes of zero recombinants were isolated in the transduction with S. eastbourne as donor: r-SBm-SBr-SEAm-SEA, r-SBm+SBr-SEAm-SEA, and r-SBm-SBr-SEAm+SEA. Since the SB and SEA R-M systems behaved as true alleles, the simplest explanation of the origin of these recombinant types was as the result of crossovers within the s and r genes of the two R-M systems. It is possible that the observation that zero recombinants were isolated more frequently when the co-transduction frequency of the complete R-M system was low (less than 5%) might be related to the fact that the R-M system would be close to the end of the transduced piece of DNA. Recent experiments have indicated that genetic recombination is initiated at the end of single-stranded pieces of DNA, (Hollman, Wiegand, Hoessli, and Radding, 1975). This could help to explain the high frequency of transduction of the zero phenotype

A Comparison of Gender Equity at Institutions with a Female Athletic Director versus Institutions with a Male Athletic Director

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a difference between gender equity at institutions with a female Athletic Director (AD) compared to a male Athletic Director across Divisions I, II and III and considering football sponsorship. For the purposes of this research, gender equity is defined as proportions of participation, operating budget, recruiting budget, scholarships budget, sport sponsorship, coaching salaries and full time coaching staff allotted to women's teams. One sample t-tests comparing the means for each gender of the Athletic Director in the eight components revealed that there were significant differences between the two groups in the Participation, Sport Sponsorship, and Coaching components of gender equity. 3 X 2 ANOVAs comparing means for the institutions that sponsor football with the means of those that do not in the eight components revealed that there were significant differences in the Participation and Operating Expenses variables

An Unusual Case of Serotonin Syndrome with Oxycodone and Citalopram

    Get PDF
A 77-year-old female with recurrent non-small-cell lung cancer presented to a hospital outpatient clinic with tremor, weakness, inability to coordinate motor movements, and confusion. It was suspected that the symptoms were due to possible central nervous system metastases; however, a CT scan of her head was unremarkable. The lung clinic liaison pharmacist took a medication history from the patient, complimented by extra information from the patient's community pharmacy. The pharmacist suspected the rare side effect of serotonin syndrome was responsible for the patient's presenting symptoms caused by the combination of oxycodone and citalopram. The patient's symptoms resolved soon after oxycodone was changed to morphine

Social Work Advocacy: Professional Self-Interest and Social Justice

This study employed an analysis of the advocacy-related resources and materials available through the 50 NASW state chapter websites. Results revealed that a large number of states had no information about advocacy on their websites (42%). One third of the mission statements reviewed contained language indicating that advocacy was part of the chapter mission, while nearly as many included no content related to advocacy or social justice on their homepages. Nearly two thirds of the websites contained no resources, tools or links to help with advocacy practice, promotion or education. Thirteen advocacy themes emerged, which represented policy issues within the state advocacy agendas. Professional Self-Interest was the issue with the highest frequency (17%) across the 2010 state chapter agendas, but the 12 other social justice issues combined dominated the legislative agendas (83%). Professional selfinterest issues accounted for the highest rate of prevalence on state agendas, as it appeared on 86% of the chapter agendas analyzed
