Classical models of urban population density. The case of Barcelona Metropolitan Area

In this paper, we study the classical functional forms density-distance and its relation with the suburbanization for the Barcelona Metropolitan Area. The investigation of population concentration will be based on a mesure of the population density gradients derived from the classical models of urban population density. The monocentric urban density analysis has received considerable attention in urban geography and regional science as an empirical issue as well as from a theorical standpoint. The classic study by Colin Clark (1951), followed by the work of Muth (1969) and Mills (1970, 1972), has led to an extensive body of literature dealing with empirical implementations for a wide range of metropolitan areas and cities, in different countries and moments of time. In this work we analize the classical econometric models of urban density. Some of them have been used in studies about the traffic planning and some others in theoretical models on housing market. Quantitative geography has also attempted to model the urban population density. The functions have been estimated from the data sets of Barcelona Metropolitan Area (for six periods of time, 1975-1998) and eleven subcenters whose population ranges from 50.000 to over 200.000 (for one period, 1991). Segregation measures and spatial autocorrelation - Location patterns of immigrant minorities in the Barcelona Region

Given the important growth of immigrants in Spain it would be interesting to study its distribution throughout the urban area. Statistics suggest different large traditional indices allowing to quantify the segregation of minority population groups. Segregation can be measured from the different points of view and a new segregation perspective can be obtained by the utilisation of innovative indices including spatial statistics elements, as well as local indicators of spatial association (LISA). Through the application of these tools on the Barcelona and its metropolitan region case, its utilities in the analysis of resident segregation in a town are shown and segregation patterns are found out. The results point out that the segregation differs depending on the observed group. The combination of all these measures represents a useful proceeding in the analysis of the distribution of immigrants in the urban zones and its convenience extends to the different areas like sociology, economics, city planning or housing policies.

Televisió pública als Estats Units: la PBS com a alternativa a les cadenes comercials

La PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) està formada per un gran nombre d'emissores locals que operen al llarg del territori. Aquests prestadors han estat un contrapoder a la televisió comercial, per resoldre l'escletxa existent entre el sistema mediàtic i les necessitats d'una societat democràtica. La televisió pública ofereix informació cultural, educativa i de qualitat, una producció finançada bàsicament a través de les donacions de particulars. No obstant això, el sistema de televisió pública als Estats Units és poc majoritari i atomitzat, per la manca d'un canal generalista comú per a tot el país i la falta d'una missió comuna entre els prestadors locals. Aquesta recerca analitza el model de televisió pública als Estats Units amb el focus posat en la informació, fruit d'una estada d'investigació realitzada a la Universitat d'Illinois.PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) is formed by a huge number of local stations, which are an alternative to commercial broadcasters. These channels have been an alternative power to commercial television to solve the gap between the media system and the needs of a democratic society. Public television offers cultural, educational and quality information, a production funded primarily through private donations. However, the system of public television in the United States is very fragmented and of a minority nature, due to the lack of a generalist channel to the whole country and the absence of a common mission among local providers. Silencio, abuso y locura: Picasso en Art & Lies, de Jeanette Winterson

In Art & Lies (1994), Jeanette Winterson presents three characters who are alter egos of Handel, Picasso, and Sappho. This article focusses on Picasso as an alter ego not only of Pablo Picasso but also of the character itself, whose birth name is Sophia, and of Pablo Picasso’s lovers, who were silenced, abused, and driven to madness like Winterson’s Picasso. The main aspects taken into account are the fact that the character is silenced by her family and that she is sexually abused by her brother in order to understand that her journey towards becoming the madwoman in the attic is induced by the harmful context that she is surrounded by in the same way that occurred to Pablo Picasso’s lovers and to Bertha Mason in Jane Eyre.En Art & Lies (1994), Jeanette Winterson presenta tres personajes que son alter egos de Handel, Picasso y Safo. Televisión pública y era digital: las emisoras de proximidad en Cataluña como caso paradigmático en su adaptación a Internet

El modelo de televisión pública local o de proximidad en Cataluña ha evolucionado substancialmente durante los últimos diez años en su adaptación a la era digital. El paso de la tecnología analógica a la digital ha provocado cambios relevantes en el modelo de televisión, tanto en lo que se refiere a su estructura como a su función. Del modelo de TDT se derivan problemas estructurales importantes que, agravados por la crisis económica, han provocado la reducción del número de prestadores públicos. La televisión digital terrestre convive con el fenómeno emergente de la televisión por Internet o IPTV, que está volviendo a la municipalización de las televisiones de proximidad, pero que presenta serias dudas sobre cómo garantizar el servicio público y la independencia del poder político. Income, distance and spatial effects in the Monocentric model. The Barcelona Metropolitan Area case.

This paper focuses on the income distribution of households in Barcelona Metropolitan Area. For this purpose we use the Monocentric model. As the basic model does not have direct implications for this distribution, we survey the extensions of the model that have been used in empirical literature. One of the most promising ways is to introduce externalities in the decision process; they can result directly from exogenous amenities (natural traits of urban area) or be created directly by other agents’ decisions. In this case, a spatial lag model and spatial error model are suited for the empirical purposes. We present evidence that any model with spatial effects improves significantly the econometric results.
