Notes on a Reinvented Field

UIDB/00417/2020 UIDP/00417/2020The special section “Immersion and expanded spectatorships” discusses how moving images have been intensely reinvented in recent virtual environments, promoting renewed forms of viewing that change and broaden the spectator’s experience. Engaging with the fact that the history of immersive media is often difficult to reconstruct and categorize clearly, the four essays here gathered reflect precisely such plurality of research lines. Simultaneously, they further demonstrate how this field has for long been shaped — and continues to be so — in a hybrid manner, through fruitful dialogues and mutual contamination. O dossier temático “Imersão e experiências de receção expandidas” discute o modo como as imagens em movimento têm vindo a ser fortemente reinventadas em ambientes virtuais recentes, promovendo renovadas formas de visionamento que modificam e alargam a experiência dos seus espectadores. Fotografias, arte e museus: da colisão à expansão

Este artigo aborda a associação existente entre fotografia, arte contemporânea e museus, procurando investigar os modos como ela foi sendo desafiada pela revolução digital. A partir da obra de Joachim Schmid, este trabalho examina as estratégias museológicas que o artista desenvolveu, e subverteu, na sua prática, para questionar e reconfigurar os enquadramentos institucionais da arte e dos museus. Questões relacionadas com a reciclagem e a (i)materialidade dos objectos fotográficos são aqui particularmente aprofundadas para compreender as novas formas de apropriação artística e de legitimação cultural que caracterizam o actual contexto tecnológico da fotografia

Dentro e fora de si: da fotografia como objecto cultural

Este artigo propõe um alargamento na abordagem normalmente aplicada à fotografia em Portugal, reclamando um espaço de abertura disciplinar e metodológica que permita, por um lado, deslocar o olhar do investigador de uma história feita de centros e de momentos marcantes e, por outro, reflectir sobre as várias dimensões discursivas e socioculturais em que a imagem fotográfica existe e dialoga com os seus públicos. Na linha da abertura fundadora que os estudos culturais provocaram na estrutura das Humanidades interessará, do mesmo modo, fomentar uma investigação baseada numa consciente focalização no objecto de estudo que seja capaz de articular diversos contributos teóricos e disciplinares no campo unificado dos estudos fotográficos. The transfer of asymmetric molecular information to the lateral plate mesoderm is essential for the precise patterning of asymmetric internal organs, such as the heart. However, at the same developmental time, it is crucial to maintain symmetry at the somite level for correct musculature and vertebrae specification. We demonstrate how left-right signals affect the behavior of zebrafish somite cell precursors by using live imaging and fate mapping studies in dand5 homozygous mutants compared to wildtype embryos. We describe a population of cells in the vicinity of the LRO, named Non-KV Sox17:GFP+ Tailbud Cells (NKSTCs), which migrate anteriorly and contribute to future somites. We show that NKSTCs originate in a cluster of cells aligned with the midline, posterior to the LRO, and leave that cluster in a left-right alternating manner, primarily from the left side. Fate mapping revealed that more NKSTCs integrated somites on the left side of the embryo. We then abolished the asymmetric cues from the LRO using dand5−/− mutant embryos and verified that NKSTCs no longer displayed asymmetric patterns. Cell exit from the posterior cluster became bilaterally synchronous in dand5−/− mutants. Our study revealed a new link between somite specification and Dand5 function. The gene dand5 is well known as the first asymmetric gene involved in vertebrate LR development. This study revealed a new link for Dand5 as a player in cell exit from the maturation zone into the presomitic mesoderm, affecting the expression patterns of myogenic factors and tail size.publishersversionpublishe

Exposure to PM2.5 and cardiovascular diseases in Portugal: the contribute of PMCardImpact project

Particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) is one of the air pollutants more detrimental to human health, being responsible for around 400 000 premature deaths in Europe every year. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and air pollution are linked, with existing evidence of a causal relationship between exposure to particulate matter and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Under the scope of PMCardImpact, a nationally funded project, data collected from the Portuguese air monitoring platform (2005-2021) (>60 stations) was used to estimate the attributable number of cases of acute myocardial infarction. The air monitoring data and parameters such as exposure-response factors will support the risk assessment in AirQ+ software (WHO Regional Office for Europe). Preliminary results showed that exceedances of the Air Quality Directive in Portugal ranged between 0.1 % and 10.2% for PM10 and PM2.5 in 2019. Results obtained will include the number of cases of CVD attributable to exposure to PM2.5 in the Portuguese population. Four scenarios of exposure will be considered for presenting the results: the current scenario of exposure, new WHO Air Quality guidelines, the European Commission Air Quality Directive, and lastly, a worst-case scenario. This assessment will be the starting point for calculating the burden of the disease of CVD that exposure to PM2.5 represents in Portugal. With a view to promoting the science-to-policy interface, the PMCardImpact project will make available to policymakers the needed supporting information to act, including actionable knowledge on air pollution trends and related health effects, to implement reducing air pollution policies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
