Circular economy in the hospitality industry : awareness and implementation in Europe
This thesis conceptualises and examines the Circular Economy in the Hospitality Industry. Sustainability has been a subject that has risen researches attention, as today’s environmental situation is aggravating on account of humans’ actions. The Hospitality Industry is considered to be in the spotlight of this issue as it is an important contributor to large waste generations. CE measures in the industry would minimise waste creation, yet this field lacks studies. For this purpose, an investigation on CE in the Hospitality Industry was made. For this research, a multiple case method was used to gather data. Interviews were made with different hotel operators from seven European countries to understand to what extent they are familiar with CE and if they integrate these measures in their operations. In general, the cases interviewed do not apply CE practices to a wider extent. The main practices carried out by the investigated hoteliers are related to basic recycling and reducing matters. Yet, one particular case stands out from the remaining cases, as it applies several CE practices intending to protect the environment. Given the complexity of this investigation and the difficulty to assemble a greater number of interviews, the responses gathered were limited and cannot be generalised due to different implications. For future research, it would be of high value to interview a greater number of participants to provide a more comprehensive and generalised study. Also, a survey would reach a higher number of participants.
In Portugal the health system takes a major role in economic and social development. In fact the services provided by the portuguese health system influence not only the social welfare but also the productivity. The contracting process joins the health sector through the "program contract", which proposes to establish a following strategy. This study aims to verify whether the public health sector respects the principles of economy, efficiency and effectiveness. In general it aims to tell whether the "program contracts" are fully implemented. In order to pursue those goals we have proceeded to the collection of the information described in the management reports of the fifteen Hospitals under the jurisdiction of the Administração Regional de Saúde do Norte. The uncertainty related to the "program contracts", the absence of a linear model for public disclosure of the "program contract" results, and also the fact that not all entities are required to issue this publication, leads us to the possibility that are not being reached the principles of economy, effectiveness and efficiency
iBoccia: monitoring elderly while playing Boccia gameplay
The size of the aging population has been increasing over the last years, leading to a search for solutions that
can increase the quality of life of the elderlies. One of the main means of action is focused on their physical
activity. A non-sedentary life can help in disease prevention and disability reduction, leading to an independent
living with quality. Moreover, the practice of physical exercise can decrease fall risks and its consequences.
Furthermore, it is desirable that the solutions can be accessed by anyone, with a low inherent cost. The Boccia
game is a good way to promote physical activity to the elderly, due to its simplicity and easy adaptability to
the physical limitations of the elderly. Following this trend, this paper presents iBoccia, a novel framework
to monitor elderly while playing Boccia game, through wearable sensors, Mio Fuse band and pandlet (inertial
sensor), and a non-wearable device, Kinect camera. Several performance metrics are expected to be measured
during the gameplay. Using the pandlet we calculate wrist rotation angles and force applied during ball throw,
using the Kinect we recognize facial expressions and from the Mio Fuse band we retrieve heart rate.We would like to acknowledge the financial support

A wearable and non-wearable approach for gesture recognition: initial results
A natural way of communication between humans
are gestures. Through this type of non-verbal communication, the
human interaction may change since it is possible to send a
particular message or capture the attention of the other peer. In
the human-computer interaction the capture of such gestures has
been a topic of interest where the goal is to classify human gestures
in different scenarios. Applying machine learning techniques, one
may be able to track and recognize human gestures and use the
gathered information to assess the medical condition of a person
regarding, for example, motor impairments. According to the type
of movement and to the target population one may use different
wearable or non-wearable sensors. In this work, we are using a
hybrid approach for automatically detecting the ball throwing
movement by applying a Microsoft Kinect (non-wearable) and the
Pandlet (set of wearable sensors such as accelerometer, gyroscope,
among others). After creating a dataset of 10 participants, a SVM
model with a DTW kernel is trained and used as a classification
tool. The system performance was quantified in terms of confusion
matrix, accuracy, sensitivity and specificity, Area Under the
Curve, and Mathews Correlation Coefficient metrics. The
obtained results point out that the present system is able to
recognize the selected throwing gestures and that the overall
performance of the Kinect is better compared to the Pandlet. This article is a result of the project Deus Ex Machina: NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000026, supported by Norte Portugal Regional Operational Program (NORTE 2020), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Segundo a
estilo de vida e comportamentos saudáveis (WHO, 2003).
medicamentosa.
A dieta, o exercício
medicamentosa
Preclinical assessment of mesenchymal-stem-cell-based therapies in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3
The low regeneration potential of the central nervous system (CNS) represents a challenge for the development of new therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases, including spinocerebellar ataxias. Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3)—or Machado–Joseph disease (MJD)—is the most common dominant ataxia, being mainly characterized by motor deficits; however, SCA3/MJD has a complex and heterogeneous pathophysiology, involving many CNS brain regions, contributing to the lack of effective therapies. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been proposed as a potential therapeutic tool for CNS disorders. Beyond their differentiation potential, MSCs secrete a broad range of neuroregulatory factors that can promote relevant neuroprotective and immunomodulatory actions in different pathophysiological contexts. The objective of this work was to study the effects of (1) human MSC transplantation and (2) human MSC secretome (CM) administration on disease progression in vivo, using the CMVMJD135 mouse model of SCA3/MJD. Our results showed that a single CM administration was more beneficial than MSC transplantation—particularly in the cerebellum and basal ganglia—while no motor improvement was observed when these cell-based therapeutic approaches were applied in the spinal cord. However, the effects observed were mild and transient, suggesting that continuous or repeated administration would be needed, which should be further tested. This research was funded by the National Ataxia Foundation (NAF) and by Portuguese national funds, through the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT)—projects UIDB/50026/2020,

Publisher Copyright: © 2021, The Author(s).CD4+ T cells mediate rheumatoid arthritis (RA) pathogenesis through both antibody-dependent and independent mechanisms. It remains unclear how synovial microenvironment impinges on CD4+ T cells pathogenic functions. Here, we identified a TLR4+ follicular helper T (Tfh) cell-like population present in the blood and expanded in synovial fluid. TLR4+ T cells possess a two-pronged pathogenic activity whereby direct TLR4+ engagement by endogenous ligands in the arthritic joint reprograms them from an IL-21 response, known to sponsor antibody production towards an IL-17 inflammatory program recognized to fuel tissue damage. Ex vivo, synovial fluid TLR4+ T cells produced IL-17, but not IL-21. Blocking TLR4 signaling with a specific inhibitor impaired IL-17 production in response to synovial fluid recognition. Mechanistically, we unveiled that T-cell HLA-DR regulates their TLR4 expression. TLR4+ T cells appear to uniquely reconcile an ability to promote systemic antibody production with a local synovial driven tissue damage program.publishersversionpublishe
INTRODUCTION: Hormonal contraceptive methods are constantly used nowadays, with a view to contraception. In developed countries such as the United States, there is a range of around 18% of use of different methods among women. In developing countries like Brazil, this percentage reaches up to 75%. OBJECTIVE: To present, according to scientific literature, the main factors associated with the use of contraceptives in the development of thromboembolism. METHODOLOGY: This is a qualitative study, it refers to an integrative review of the literature, presenting a synthesis of the studies analyzed in full, organizing them for the elaboration of results regarding the established theme, being carried out in the month of September 2023. RESULTS: The development of Thromboembolism caused by the various oral contraceptive methods is evidenced through studies that demonstrate the serious risks to female health, requiring greater caution in the use of hormonal and emergency pills. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: Therefore, it is noted that the use of hormonal contraceptives brings benefits such as preventing conception, however it can be a major factor in the development of thromboembolism.INTRODUÇÃO: Os métodos contraceptivos hormonais são utilizados constantemente nos dias atuais, tendo em vista a anticoncepção.
INTRODUCTION: Gestational Diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a disease resulting from glucose intolerance of varying degrees diagnosed during the gestational period, up to the third trimester of pregnancy. Pregnancy is characterized by several factors that make a diabetogenic state, as insulin and carbohydrate metabolism change in order to make glucose more accessible to the fetus. OBJECTIVE: to present, according to scientific literature, the main metabolic changes associated with gestational diabetes. METHODOLOGY: This is a qualitative study, it refers to na integrative review of the literature, presenting a synthesis of the studies analyzed in full, organizing them for the elaboration of results regarding the established theme, being carried out in the month of August 2023. RESULTS: The main metabolic changes resulting from Gestational Diabetes are polyhydramnios, in 25% of cases, pyelonephritis and urinary infections, hypertensive syndromes, ketoacidosis, hyperglycemia and the risk of developing type 2 DM, in addition to vascular lesions in the retina and kidneys. These metabolic changes associated with hyperglycemia may lead to a greater risk of miscarriage for pregnant women. CONCLUSION: Therefore, due to the various changes present in the woman’s body during the gestational period, greater care is necessary for pregnant women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), so that the multidisciplinary team is ready to guide the care and treatments that this population needs, from blood glucose screening to care at the time of birth, avoiding possible metabolic complications and, in more serious cases, maternal-fetal death.INTRODUÇÃO: A Diabetes mellitus gestacional (DMG) é uma doença proveniente da intolerância à glicose de graus variáveis diagnosticada durante o período gestacional, até o terceiro trimestre da gravidez.
