Copula-like inference for discrete bivariate distributions with rectangular support

After reviewing a large body of literature on the modeling of bivariate discrete distributions with finite support, \cite{Gee20} made a compelling case for the use of the iterative proportional fitting procedure (IPFP), also known as Sinkhorn's algorithm or matrix scaling in the literature, as a sound way to attempt to decompose a bivariate probability mass function into its two univariate margins and a bivariate probability mass function with uniform margins playing the role of a discrete copula. After stating what could be regarded as a discrete analog of Skar's theorem, we investigate, for starting bivariate p.m.f.s with rectangular support, nonparametric and parametric estimation procedures as well as goodness-of-fit tests for the underlying discrete copula. Related asymptotic results are provided and build upon a new differentiability result for the iterative proportional fitting procedure which can be of independent interest. Theoretical results are complemented by finite-sample experiments and a data example.Comment: 44 pages, 1 figure, 9 table

A estrutura do design para Objetos Culturais Inteligentes

Nowadays cities, as well as Cultural Heritage, are facing new challenges due to the public financial straits and the increasing need to deliver innovative service to manage a wide heritage. Great expectations are in put the Smart City paradigm relying on the capability of the city to realize and scale up intangible infrastructures based on new typologies of partnerships for the development of services. The paper presents a design framework aimed to transform Cultural Items in Smart Cultural Objects (SCO), meant as sources and recipients of advanced information applied on ‘Widespread Built Cultural Heritage’. The aim has been not just to enhance the artifacts with their own quality, but their unique social, communal, anthropological and urban-infrastructural meaning. The ability to manage efficiently heterogeneous data and the levels of global connectivity, as well as the real-time interaction, perception, localization, communication, and identification, made possible by cloud computing and Internet of Things, to allow the changeover from Cultural Objects to SCO. The framework, here exposed, aims to provide an extensive and robust theoretical support to design and to manage the processes of Cultural Objects and Cultural bins, implementing a methodological system and an advanced environment based on ICT technologies for recording, storage, processing, access and presentation of Cultural Heritage (CH) data in a Smart Management environment. Grandes expectativas utilizam o modelo Smart City contando com a capacidade de a cidade realizar e ampliar as infraestruturas intangíveis baseadas em novas tipologias de parcerias para o desenvolvimento de serviços. O artigo apresenta uma estrutura de projeto com o objetivo de transformar os itens culturais em Objetos Culturais Inteligentes (OCIs), destinado a fontes e destinatários da informação avançada aplicada sobre “Património Cultural construída generalizada”. O objetivo é não apenas melhorar os artefatos com a sua própria qualidade, mas também o seu significado social, comunal, antropológico e urbano-de infraestrutura única. A capacidade de gerenciar de forma eficiente dados heterogêneos e os níveis de conectividade global, bem como a interação em tempo real, percepção, localização, comunicação e identificação, possibilitadas pela computação em nuvem e Internet das Coisas, permite a passagem de bens culturais para OCIs. A estrutura, aqui exposta, visa proporcionar um extenso e robusto suporte teórico para projetar e gerenciar os processos de bens culturais e caixas Culturais, implementando um sistema metodológico e um ambiente avançado com base em TIC para gravação, armazenamento, tratamento, acesso e apresentação do Patrimônio Cultural (PC) de dados em um ambiente de Gestão Inteligente. The association of the goatfish mulloidichthys martinicus with the grunt haemulon chrysargyreum: an example of protective mimicry

A presumed example of protective mimicry between the yellow goatfish, Mulloidichthys martinicus (Mullidae) and the smallmouth grunt, Haemulon chrysargyreum (Haemulidae) is described from Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, NE Brazil. The goatfish and the grunt share a similar overall shape and colour pattern. We found that these two species regularly form mixed schools around reefs. Additionally, when chased small groups of yellow goatfish join schools of smallmouth grunts and behave like them. The colour and shape resemblances between the two species enable their mixed schooling, and enhance the protection against visually oriented predators for both of them. Thus, we suggest that the protective association herein reported for the goatfish and the grunt may be considered as a “social mimicry”, since neither species is venomous, poisonous or strongly armed. Furthermore, we suggest that additional instances of social mimicry may involve the yellow goatfish and other striped Haemulon species.Descrevemos aqui um possível exemplo de mimetismo de proteção entre o saramunete Mulloidichthys martinicus (Mullidae) e a xira Haemulon chrysargyreum (Haemulidae), no Arquipélago de Fernando de Noronha, Nordeste do Brasil. O saramunete e a xira são semelhantes entre si, no padrão de coloração e no formato do corpo. Observamos que estas duas espécies formam cardumes mistos regularmente, ao redor de recifes. Quando perseguidos, pequenos grupos isolados de saramunetes se associam aos cardumes de xira e se comportam de modo semelhante às xiras. As semelhanças de formato e coloração entre as duas espécies provavelmente facilitam a formação de cardumes mistos e aumentam a proteção contra predadores visualmente orientados, para ambas as espécies. Assim, acreditamos que a associação protetora entre o saramunete e a xira pode ser considerada como um tipo de “mimetismo social”, uma vez que nenhuma destas espécies é venenosa, peçonhenta ou tem fortes estruturas mecânicas de defesa. Sugerimos, ainda, que exemplos adicionais de mimetismo social possam envolver o saramunete e outras espécies listradas de Haemulon.1

The glassy sweepers' way: seeking a versatile wrasse to be cleaned

Diurnal reef fishes compose the bulk of clients that seek cleaner fishes' services, but some nocturnal species that shelter at daytime also seek the cleaners. While doing so the nocturnal clients must leave their hiding places and thus they get exposed to potential diurnal predators. We report here on the cleaning interactions between a daytime cleaner wrasse (Thalassoma noronhanum) and a night time active client (Pempheris schomburgki) that usually remains sheltered at daytime. We recorded P. schomburgki leaving their shelter at daytime and heading towards T. noronhanum, whenever the cleaner swam by the shelter. Since T. noronhanum is able to tend temporary cleaning station near the safety of the shelters of its clients, P. schomburgki lessens a possible risk of predation by seeking this versatile cleaner.Peixes recifais diurnos compõem a maioria dos clientes nas estações de peixes limpadores. Entretanto, algumas espécies com hábitos noturnos também procuram os peixes limpadores, ficando expostas a potenciais predadores diurnos quando precisam deixar seus abrigos. Registramos aqui as interações de limpeza entre um labrídeo diurno (Thalassoma noronhanum) e um cliente com hábitos noturnos (Pempheris schomburgki), que permanece abrigado durante o dia. Esta espécie de cliente deixa seu abrigo durante o dia e nada em direção a T. noronhanum quando este limpador desloca-se próximo aos esconderijos. Uma vez que T. noronhanum é capaz de manter estações de limpeza temporárias, próximas aos abrigos dos clientes, P. schomburgki diminui uma possível exposição aos predadores quando procura esta espécie versátil de limpador.11912

Evaluation of a ophthalmology learning support for handheld computer for medical students

OBJECTIVE: In the last decade the handheld computers have been popularized among health professionals, on the USA, for instance, among 60-70% of medical students already use them. Make clinical information available on these devices can aid teaching medical practices, however, the way they are structured may influence students' satisfaction and learning. The purpose of this paper is to present MDFluxo evaluation, a program developed in handheld computers to aid ophthalmology teaching. METHODS: The program was developed with structured flowcharts extracted from The Ophthalmology Guide book. The assessment was placed comparing 20 medical under-graduating students' performance solving clinical cases aided by the program, a book, or no material. RESULTS: The results shown that the performance of students in the evaluation with book was equivalent to MDFluxo in etiology (p <0.01) and conduct (p <0.05) on clinical cases solving and better performance than without the use any material. CONCLUSION: On MDFluxo user satisfaction evaluation 82.5% of students approved it's use on clinical case solving.OBJETIVO: Na última década os computadores de mão se popularizaram entre profissionais da saúde. Nos EUA, por exemplo, cerca de 60-70% dos estudantes de medicina já os utilizam. A disponibilização de informação clínica nestes dispositivos pode auxiliar no ensino de práticas médicas, no entanto, a maneira como são estruturadas pode influenciar na satisfação e no aprendizado dos alunos. Portanto, este artigo objetiva apresentar os resultados da avaliação do MDFluxo: um programa para auxílio ao ensino de oftalmologia em computadores de mão. MÉTODOS: O programa foi desenvolvido com fluxogramas estruturados, extraídos do Guia de Oftalmologia da Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP). A avaliação foi realizada, comparando o desempenho de 20 estudantes de medicina na solução de casos clínicos, utilizando o programa, o livro ou nenhum material. RESULTADOS: Os resultados mostram que o desempenho dos estudantes na avaliação com o livro foi equivalente ao MDFluxo nas questões sobre etiologia (p<0,01) e conduta (p<0,05) na solução dos casos clínicos, desempenho melhor do que sem a utilização de nenhum material. Does the association of young fishes with jellyfishes protect from predation?A report on a failure case due to damage to the jellyfish

The fish-jellyfish association is regarded as a temporary symbiosis believed to protect the fishes from predators. Here we report on juvenile scads (Trachurus lathami) associated with the jellyfish Chrysaora lactea, opportunistically preyed on by the grouper Mycteroperca acutirostris while the medusa was being damaged. The predation instances occurred when a couple of the filefish Stephanolepis hispidus approached the jellyfish to nibble on its umbrella. The feeding of the filefish caused a momentary disturbance of the defensive association, perceived and capitalised on by the watchful grouper, an opportunistic and versatile hunter. Before and after the disturbance, the protection offered to the young fish by the jellyfish showed to be effective, which strengthens the hypothesis of defensive function of this association.A associação entre peixes e medusas é considerada uma simbiose temporária que protegeria os peixes contra predadores. Relatamos aqui a predação oportunista de juvenis de xixarro Trachurus lathami, associados à medusa Chrysaora lactea, pelo badejo-mira Mycteroperca acutirostris enquanto a medusa estava sendo danificada. Os eventos de predação ocorreram quando um casal do peixe-porco Stephanolepis hispidus se aproximou da medusa para alimentar-se de pequenas porções da sua umbrela. A alimentação dos peixes-porcos causou um distúrbio momentâneo na associação defensiva, percebido e aproveitado pelo atento badejo-mira, um predador versátil e oportunista. Antes e depois do distúrbio, a proteção conferida aos peixes juvenis pela medusa mostrou ser efetiva, fortalecendo a hipótese de função defensiva desta associação.10310
