Characterization of Hydrogels for Their Application in Tissue Regeneration

Alterations in neurogenesis result in the inevitable loss of brain nervous tissue and cause neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and Huntington’s disease (HD). In this regard, hydrogels based on natural biopolymers have attractive properties, such as excellent biocompatibility, a low immune response, and a significant similarity to the extracellular matrix (ECM) of tissues, thus supporting cell proliferation and migration. Human ECM is composed by relatively small amounts of fibrous, proteins, and polysaccharides. For example, scaffolds composed of gelatin and hyaluronic acid are highly abundant components in human ECM. The methacrylation of hyaluronic acid (HAMA) and gelatin (GelMA) through carboxyl and hydroxyl groups under UV light radiation at 365 nm produce polymeric scaffolds with elastic moduli similar to tissues, and, therefore, potential candidates to adhere, host, and facilitate cell proliferation and differentiation, which are dependent on their mechanical properties. Fracture Limits of Maxillary Fourth Premolar Teeth in Domestic Dogs Under Applied Forces

A cadaveric study was performed to investigate the external mechanical forces required to fracture maxillary fourth premolar teeth in domestic dogs and describe a clinically relevant model of chewing forces placed on functionally important teeth in which fracture patterns are consistent with those defined by the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC). Twenty-four maxillary fourth premolar teeth were harvested from dog cadavers. Samples consisted of teeth with surrounding alveolar bone potted in polycarbonate cylinders filled with acrylic. The cylinders were held by an aluminum device at an angle of 60° with respect to the ground. An axial compression test was performed, creating a force upon the occluso-palatal aspects of the main cusps of the crowns of the teeth. The highest compressive force prior to failure was considered the maximum force sustained by the teeth. Results showed the mean maximum force (± SD) sustained by the tested teeth at the point of fracture was 1,281 N (± 403 N) at a mean impact angle (± SD) of 59.7° (± 5.2°). The most common fracture type that occurred among all samples was a complicated crown fracture (n = 12), followed by an uncomplicated crown fracture (n = 6), complicated crown-root fracture (n = 5), and uncomplicated crown-root fracture (n = 1). There was no statistically significant correlation between dog breed, age, weight, impact angle, crown height or crown diameter, and the maximum force applied at the point of fracture. The only independent variable that remained significantly associated with maximum force was the crown height to diameter ratio (p = 0.005), suggesting that a decreased ratio increases tooth fracture resistance. The methodology described herein has been successful in creating a pattern of fracture of maxillary fourth premolar teeth consistent with that defined by the AVDC under angled compression at forces within the maximum chewing capability of the average domestic dog

Phase behavior of the systems n-decanephosphonic acid/water and n-dodecanephosphonic acid/water

The n-decanephosphonic acid/water and n-dodecanephosphonic acid/water systems were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, hot stage polarized light microscopy, and FT-IR spectropetry. There is a rich polymorphism: in both systems there are three liquid crystalline phases (lamellar L? and L? and an inverse cubic phase) plus the isotropic liquid and two solid phases. One of the solids is an ordinary cristalline phase and the other is a waxy crystal in which the polar headgroup network is rigid and ordered but in which the alkyl chains are partially fluid and disordered. The water in these systems exists in two distinct forms: water bound to the headgroups and water which is effectively free. Semantic Segmentation for Aerial Mapping

Mobile robots commonly have to traverse rough terrains. One way to find the easiest traversable path is by determining the types of terrains in the environment. The result of this process can be used by the path planning algorithms to find the best traversable path. In this work, we present an approach for terrain classification from aerial images while using a Convolutional Neural Networks at the pixel level. The segmented images can be used in robot mapping and navigation tasks. The performance of two different Convolutional Neural Networks is analyzed in order to choose the best architecture

Real-Time Neural Classifiers for Sensor and Actuator Faults in Three-Phase Induction Motors

The main steps involved in a fault-tolerant control (FTC) scheme are the detection of failures, isolation and reconfiguration of control. Fault detection and isolation (FDI) is a topic of interest due to its importance for the controller, since it provides the necessary information to adjust and mitigate the effects of the fault. Generally, the most common failures occur in the actuator or in sensors, so this article proposes a novel model-free scheme for the detection and isolation of sensor and actuator faults of induction motors (IM). The proposed methodology performs the task of detecting and isolating faults over data streams just after the occurrence of the failure of an induction motor (IM), by the occurrence of either disconnection, degradation, failure, or connection damage. Our approach proposes deep neural networks that do not need a nominal model or generate residuals for fault detection, which makes it a useful tool. In addition, the fault-isolation approach is carried out by classifiers that differentiate characteristics independently of the other classifiers. The long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network, bidirectional LSTM, multilayer perceptron and convolutional neural network are used for this task. The proposed sensors’ and actuator’s fault detection and isolation scheme is simple. It can be applied to various problems involving fault detection and isolation schemes. The results show that deep neural networks are a powerful and versatile tool for fault detection and isolation over data streams

Polymerization of aqueous liquid-crystalline allyldimethyldodecylammonium bromide

Allyldimethyldodecylammonium bromide was polymerized by ?-ray irradiation in both hexagonal and cubic mesophases, and the conversion-time curves were obtained. The maximum conversion was about 35%, and the polymer remained in the liquid-crystalline structure formed by the nonpolymerized monomers. The influence of polymerization on the distribution of water in the different types related to the hydrophilic surfaces of microstructures was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The incomplete polymerization was explained by steric constraints in the liquid-crystalline structures

Preparation, characterization and photoactivity of TiO2 obtained by a reverse microemulsion route

TiO2 was synthesized by a reverse microemulsion route. By using different water contents in the reverse microemulsion, we obtained three different materials named R=10, R=20 and R=30. The reverse microemulsion synthesis has the advantage that the kind of the crystalline titania structure obtained may be changed by simply modifying the water content in the microemulsion. The synthesized materials were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Methylene blue (MB) was used as testing dye; we studied the pH effect and catalyst dosage in the MB photodegradation.
