English: In this thesis we have studied the capabilities of the Android platform regarding multimedia, network traffic capture and location-based services. Our ultimate goal was to develop code to help introduce Android programming in teaching activities, taking advantage of the boom in mobile applications coupled with the benefits of using free software. Android was developed by a group of technology and mobile companies (the Open Handset Alliance), and is a free operating system, designed for mobile devices and tablets and currently found on smartbooks, SmartTVs or cameras. We studied and documented the use of encoders, decoders, containers and networking protocols supported by Android. We applied this knowledge for develop a media application that allows to choose the coders and output formats. The application can take JPEG, PNG, GIF and BMP pictures, record video encoded with H.263, H.264 and MPEG-4, and encapsulate video (H.263 and H.264) in RTP packets to send them through an IP network in real time. Moreover, we analyzed the location capabilities of the platform, determining the format of the returned data and its accuracy. We evaluated, through the results of tests, the frequency of the location updates offered by the service. We developed a service that stores, in parallel, the location data and network traffic generated and received in the mobile device. To do this, we used part of Shark application developed by another student at EETAC and added location capabilities. The purpose of this service is, through the joint analysis of generated data in many devices that run this application, improve the planning and deployment of mobile and Wi-Fi networks. Additionally, we implemented an application that analyzes the data generated in one device and draws it on Google Maps

    Two-zero textures for Dirac Neutrinos

We review the two-zero mass matrix textures approach for Dirac neutrinos with the most recent global fit in the oscillation parameters. We found that three of the 15 possible textures are compatible with current experimental data, while the remaining two-zero textures are ruled out. Two textures are consistent with the neutrino masses' normal hierarchy and are CP-conserving. At the same time, the other one is compatible with both mass orderings and allows for CP violation. We also present the correlations between the oscillation parameters for the allowed two-zero textures.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

Impact of sugar replacement by non-centrifugal sugar on physicochemical, antioxidant and sensory properties of strawberry and kiwifruit functional jams

[EN] Raw cane sugars have been claimed to be rich in natural phenolic compounds which, in contrast to refined sugar, may increase the nutritional value of foods and contribute to the development of healthier foods and diets. The use of non-refined cane sugars in food formulation seems an interesting option since they provide natural antioxidants with sucrose still being the major sugar present, minimizing the loss of technological properties. However, substitution of refined sugar could imply an undesired impact on physicochemical and sensory properties, conditioning consumer's acceptance. Functional jams (strawberry and kiwifruit) with a larger fruit to sugar ratio than conventional ones, in which white sugar was replaced by granulated jaggery (0, 15, 30, 45, 60 y 75 % w/w) were obtained. Impact of sugar replacement was assessed by evaluating physicochemical properties (moisture, water activity, pH, total soluble sugars, sugar profile (glucose, fructose, sucrose), and optical, rheological, mechanical and antioxidant properties). Sensory properties and microbiological stability were also determined. Jaggery improved the antioxidant properties of jams (total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, antiradical activity by the DPPH and ABTS methods), proportionally to the amount of cane sugar incorporated and more significantly in the case of kiwifruit. Other physicochemical properties were not significantly affected by jaggery, except for color. However, these differences were not crucial in the acceptability tests, since acceptance of jams containing jaggery was generally good, very good when intermediate replacement percentages were used. Conclusions of the present work suggest that granulated jaggery can be used to formulate sugar-rich food products such as jams in order to increase their nutritional value, with little impact on physicochemical properties and good consumer acceptance. This work was supported by Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (PAID-06-10-2420) and Generalitat Valenciana (GV/2013/047), Spain.Cervera-Chiner, L.; Barrera Puigdollers, C.; Betoret Valls, N.; Seguí Gil, L. MAP17 (PDZK1IP1) and pH2AX are potential predictive biomarkers for rectal cancer treatment efficacy

Rectal cancer represents approximately 10% of cancers worldwide. Preoperative chemoradiotherapy increases complete pathologic response and local control, although it offers a poor advantage in survivorship and sphincter saving compared with that of radiotherapy alone. After preoperative chemoradiotherapy, approximately 20% of patients with rectal cancer achieve a pathologic complete response to the removed surgical specimen; this response may be related to a better prognosis and an improvement in disease-free survival. However, better biomarkers to predict response and new targets are needed to stratify patients and obtain better response rates. MAP17 (PDZK1IP1) is a small, 17 kDa non-glycosylated membrane protein located in the plasma membrane and Golgi apparatus and is overexpressed in a wide variety of human carcinomas. MAP17 has been proposed as a predictive biomarker for reactive oxygen species, ROS, inducing treatments in cervical tumors or laryngeal carcinoma. Due to the increase in ROS, MAP17 is also associated with the marker of DNA damage, phosphoH2AX (pH2AX). In the present manuscript, we examined the values of MAP17 and pH2AX as surrogate biomarkers of the response in rectal tumors. MAP17 expression after preoperative chemoradiotherapy is able to predict the response to chemoradiotherapy, similar to the increase in pH2AX. Furthermore, we explored whether we can identify molecular targeted therapies that could help improve the response of these tumors to radiotherapy. In this sense, we found that the inhibition of DNA damage with olaparib increased the response to radio- and chemotherapy, specifically in tumors with high levels of pH2AX and MAP17.Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitivity, Plan Estatal de I+D+I 2013–2016, ISCIII (Fis: PI15/00045) and CIBER de Cáncer (CB16/12/00275)co-funded by FEDER from Regional Development European Funds (European Union), Consejería de Ciencia e Innovación (CTS-1848)Consejería de Salud of the Junta de Andalucía (PI-0096–2014)

Efficient and accurate algorithms for computing matrix trigonometric functions

[EN] Trigonometric matrix functions play a fundamental role in second order differential equations. This work presents an algorithm based on Taylor series for computing the matrix cosine. It uses a backward error analysis with improved bounds. Numerical experiments show that MATLAB implementations of this algorithm has higher accuracy than other MATLAB implementations of the state of the art in the majority of tests. Furthermore, we have implemented the designed algorithm in language C for general purpose processors, and in CUDA for one and two NVIDIA GPUs. We obtained a very good performance from these implementations thanks to the high computational power of these hardware accelerators and our effort driven to avoid as much communications as possible. All the implemented programs are accessible through the MATLAB environment. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.

    Get PDF
Haematococcus pluvialis is a microalga of biotechnological interest due to its ability to produce astaxanthin, a carotenoid that is used as a pigment and a bioactive compound. It has applications in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, nutraceutical, food, and aquaculture industries. This carotenoid is obtained when the microalgae is subjected to stress conditions such as light intensity, light color, nutrient deficiency, and salinity, and involves the use of photobioreactors (PBR). For this reason, this article is intended to show the type of PBR that has been used in its scaling and the related kinetic parameters that influence the performance of the process. PBRs facilitate the adjustment and control of the cultivation conditions, both in the green phase and in the red phase. Likewise, the use of the kinetic scaling parameters allows evaluating the process, thus, establishing the conditions that must be adjusted, to improve the cultivation of the microalgae and obtaining astaxanthin. The kinetic scaling parameters reviewed were biomass (cel/mL), biomass productivity (g/Lday), specific growth rate (µ/day), doubling time (day), astaxanthin content (mg/g) and its productivity. Thus, the technological feasibility of photobioreactors for the scaling of microalgae to produce astaxanthin is demonstrated. The most commonly used PBRs are tubular and cylindrical because they have a greater illumination surface and efficiency in light distribution, and because they report higher astaxanthin productivity; its downside may be the costs for their cleaning.
