    Liquid-crystal patterns of rectangular particles in a square nanocavity

    Using density-functional theory in the restricted-orientation approximation, we analyse the liquid-crystal patterns and phase behaviour of a fluid of hard rectangular particles confined in a two-dimensional square nanocavity of side length HH composed of hard inner walls. Patterning in the cavity is governed by surface-induced order, capillary and frustration effects, and depends on the relative values of particle aspect ratio Îș≡L/σ\kappa\equiv L/\sigma, with LL the length and σ\sigma the width of the rectangles (L≄σL\ge\sigma), and cavity size HH. Ordering may be very different from bulk (H→∞H\to\infty) behaviour when HH is a few times the particle length LL (nanocavity). Bulk and confinement properties are obtained for the cases Îș=1\kappa=1, 3 and 6. In the confined fluid surface-induced frustration leads to four-fold symmetry breaking in all phases (which become two-fold symmetric). Since no director distorsion can arise in our model by construction, frustration in the director orientation is relaxed by the creation of domain walls (where the director changes by 90∘90^{\circ}); this configuration is necessary to stabilise periodic phases. For Îș=1\kappa=1 the crystal becomes stable with commensuration transitions taking place as HH is varied. In the case Îș=3\kappa=3 the commensuration transitions involve columnar phases with different number of columns. Finally, in the case Îș=6\kappa=6, the high-density region of the phase diagram is dominated by commensuration transitions between smectic structures; at lower densities there is a symmetry-breaking isotropic →\to nematic transition exhibiting non-monotonic behaviour with cavity size.Comment: 31 pages, 15 figure

    Applying the COM-B model to creation of an IT-enabled health coaching and resource linkage program for low-income Latina moms with recent gestational diabetes: the STAR MAMA program.

    BACKGROUND:One of the fastest growing risk groups for early onset of diabetes is women with a recent pregnancy complicated by gestational diabetes, and for this group, Latinas are the largest at-risk group in the USA. Although evidence-based interventions, such as the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), which focuses on low-cost changes in eating, physical activity and weight management can lower diabetes risk and delay onset, these programs have yet to be tailored to postpartum Latina women. This study aims to tailor a IT-enabled health communication program to promote DPP-concordant behavior change among postpartum Latina women with recent gestational diabetes. The COM-B model (incorporating Capability, Opportunity, and Motivational behavioral barriers and enablers) and the Behavior Change Wheel (BCW) framework, convey a theoretically based approach for intervention development. We combined a health literacy-tailored health IT tool for reaching ethnic minority patients with diabetes with a BCW-based approach to develop a health coaching intervention targeted to postpartum Latina women with recent gestational diabetes. Current evidence, four focus groups (n = 22 participants), and input from a Regional Consortium of health care providers, diabetes experts, and health literacy practitioners informed the intervention development. Thematic analysis of focus group data used the COM-B model to determine content. Relevant cultural, theoretical, and technological components that underpin the design and development of the intervention were selected using the BCW framework. RESULTS:STAR MAMA delivers DPP content in Spanish and English using health communication strategies to: (1) validate the emotions and experiences postpartum women struggle with; (2) encourage integration of prevention strategies into family life through mothers becoming intergenerational custodians of health; and (3) increase social and material supports through referral to social networks, health coaches, and community resources. Feasibility, acceptability, and health-related outcomes (weight loss, physical activity, consumption of healthy foods, breastfeeding, and glucose screening) will be evaluated at 9 months postpartum using a randomized controlled trial design. CONCLUSIONS:STAR MAMA provides a DPP-based intervention that integrates theory-based design steps. Through systematic use of behavioral theory to inform intervention development, STAR MAMA may represent a strategy to develop health IT intervention tools to meet the needs of diverse populations.     Assessment of the variability of the I-V characteristic of HfO2-based resistive switching devices and its simulation using the quasi-static memdiode model

    Altres ajuts: acords transformatius de la UABVariability of the conduction characteristics of filamentary-type resistive switching devices or resistive RAMs (RRAMs) is a hot research topic both in academia and industry because it is currently considered one of the major showstoppers for the successful development and application of this technology. In this work, we thoroughly investigate the statistics of the cycle-to-cycle (C2C) variability observed in the experimental current-voltage (I-V) curves of HfO-based memristive structures using the fitdistrplus package for the R language. This exploratory analysis allows us to identify which parametric probability distributions are the most suitable candidates for describing our data. This study involves graphical tools such as the density, skewness-kurtosis (S-K), and quantile-quantile (Q-Q) plots. The analysis is completed with the aid of goodness-of-fit statistics (Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Cramer-von Mises, Anderson-Darling) and criteria (Akaike's and Bayesian). The selected distributions are incorporated into the SPICE script of the quasi-static memdiode model for resistive switching devices and used for simulating uncorrelated C2C variability. Finally, a one-way sensitivity analysis is carried out in order to test the impact of the model parameters variation in the output characteristics of the device

    Predictors of weight gain in a Mediterranean cohort: the Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra Study 1

    BACKGROUND: High consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks has been associated with weight gain and obesity in the United States. This trend may also be affecting populations with different eating patterns who increasingly are adopting typical US dietary patterns. OBJECTIVE: We assessed whether the consumption of sweetened drinks and other food items increased the likelihood of weight gain in a Mediterranean population. DESIGN: This was a prospective cohort analysis of 7194 men and women with a mean age of 41 y who were followed-up for a median of 28.5 mo with mailed questionnaires. Dietary exposure was assessed with a previously validated semiquantitative food-frequency questionnaire. RESULTS: During follow-up, we observed that 49.5% of the participants increased their weight (x weight gain: 0.64 kg; 95% CI: 0.55, 0.73 kg). In the participants who had gained > or =3 kg in the 5 y before baseline, the adjusted odds ratio of subsequent weight gain for the fifth quintile compared with the first quintile of sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption was 1.6 (95% CI: 1.2, 2.1; P for trend = 0.02). This association was absent in the participants who had not gained weight in the 5-y period before baseline. The consumption of hamburgers, pizza, and sausages (as a proxy for fast-food consumption) was also independently associated with weight gain (adjusted odds ratio for the fifth compared with the first quintile = 1.2; 95% CI: 1.0, 1.4; P for trend = 0.05). We also found a significant, but weaker, association between weight gain and both red meat and sweetened fruit juice consumption. CONCLUSION: In a Mediterranean cohort, particularly in the participants who had already gained weight, an increased consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks and of hamburgers, pizza, and sausages was associated with a higher risk of additional subsequent weight gain
