Physical Layer Security of Large Reflecting Surface Aided Communications with Phase Errors

    Get PDF
The physical layer security (PLS) performance of a wireless communication link through a large reflecting surface (LRS) with phase errors is analyzed. Leveraging recent results that express the \ac{LRS}-based composite channel as an equivalent scalar fading channel, we show that the eavesdropper's link is Rayleigh distributed and independent of the legitimate link. The different scaling laws of the legitimate and eavesdroppers signal-to-noise ratios with the number of reflecting elements, and the reasonably good performance even in the case of coarse phase quantization, show the great potential of LRS-aided communications to enhance PLS in practical wireless set-ups.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for publication. A New Educational Escape-Room-Based Model for the Sustainable Valorization and Management of Cultural and Natural Heritage

    Get PDF
Based on the model of the “escape room” game, the activity proposed in this paper centres on the historical site of one of the fiercest battles of the Spanish Civil War (February 1937). The battle site is in the area of Rivas-vaciamadrid, the focal point of the Francoist and Republican camps, which connected the centre of Madrid with one of the city’s most important logistics and military facilities, Alcalà de Henares. The study proposes a new way to use the site and, in particular, proposes a live game aimed at involving different types of participants, aligning it with their specific profiles, whether children, adults or scholars. Its main aim is to propose an activity for the sustainable valorization of this heritage and to raise awareness in participants about this significant piece of history as well as its preservation in the long-term. It should be kept in mind that “Los pueblos que desconocen su Historia están condenados a repetirla”, i.e. “Those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it”.The Rivas-vaciamadrid site is also a source of information and study regarding geological, natural and historical-artistic aspects. One example is the Porphyrio porphiyrio (western swamphen), present in the ecosystem of Rivas-vaciamadrid, which has a noteworthy past having been depicted in the mosaics of both the "Villa Romana del Casale" in Sicily and the Church of "San Vitale", in Ravenna, Italy as well as being reported in writings by Aristotle and Pliny the Elder

Multi-task multiple kernel machines for personalized pain recognition from functional near-infrared spectroscopy brain signals

Currently there is no validated objective measure of pain. Recent neuroimaging studies have explored the feasibility of using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure alterations in brain function in evoked and ongoing pain. In this study, we applied multi-task machine learning methods to derive a practical algorithm for pain detection derived from fNIRS signals in healthy volunteers exposed to a painful stimulus. Especially, we employed multi-task multiple kernel learning to account for the inter-subject variability in pain response. Our results support the use of fNIRS and machine learning techniques in developing objective pain detection, and also highlight the importance of adopting personalized analysis in the process.Comment: International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR

A pipeline framework for robot maze navigation using computer vision, path planning and communication protocols.

    Get PDF
Maze navigation is a recurring challenge in robotics competitions, where the aim is to design a strategy for one or several entities to traverse the optimal path in a fast and efficient way. To do so, numerous alternatives exist, relying on different sensing systems. Recently, camera-based approaches are becoming increasingly popular to address this scenario due to their reliability and given the possibility of migrating the resulting technologies to other application areas, mostly related to human-robot interaction. The aim of this paper is to present a pipeline methodology towards enabling a robot solving maze autonomously, by means of computer vision and path planning. Afterwards, the robot is capable of communicating the learned experience to a second robot, which then will solve the same challenge considering its own mechanical characteristics which may differ from the first robot. The pipeline is divided into four steps: (1) camera calibration (2) maze mapping (3) path planning and (4) communication. Experimental validation shows the efficiency of each step towards building this pipeline

π‐Bridge Substitution in DASAs: The Subtle Equilibrium between Photochemical Improvements and Thermal Control

    Get PDF
Donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) are playing an outstanding role as innovative and versatile photoswitches. Until now, all the efforts have been spent on modifying the donor and acceptor moieties to modulate the absorption energy and improve the cyclization and reversion kinetics. However, there is a strong dependence on specific structural modifications and a lack of predictive behavior, mostly owing to the complex photoswitching mechanism. Here, by means of a combined experimental and theoretical study, the effect of chemical modification of the pi-bridge linking the donor and acceptor moieties is systematically explored, revealing the significant impact on the absorption, photocyclization, and relative stability of the open form. In particular, a position along the pi-bridge is found to be the most suited to redshift the absorption while preserving the cyclization. However, thermal back-reaction to the initial isomer is blocked. These effects are explained in terms of an increased acceptor capability offered by the pi-bridge substituent that can be modulated. This strategy opens the path toward derivatives with infra-red absorption and a potential anchoring point for further functionalization

    Ayotzinapa: Viejas luchas, nuevas formas

    Get PDF
