Evaluation of remanufacturing as a production alternative to reduce the magnitude of environmental impacts using TRACI

    Get PDF
As a result of many environmental problems associated with industrial activities and manufacturing applications, several production strategies have been evaluated to reduce the magnitude of ecological impacts. Through remanufacturing, the physical form of the product is retained along with its economic value, offering a viable option to address actual ecological problems that result from production practices. One of the instruments used to evaluate process performance and product generation is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). However, to date, all software packages used to conduct LCA have failed to incorporate remanufacturing as a production alternative. The EPA\u27s TRACI software package utilized in this research describes the product lifecycle in only four stages: raw materials acquisition, manufacturing, use/reuse/maintenance, and recycle/waste management. An evaluation is performed to assess the potential benefits and liabilities of incorporating the remanufacturing cycle into the production system and evaluating the importance of doing so over a range of potentially remanufacturable products. Furthermore, a case study is conducted to demonstrate that remanufacturing may represent a useful strategy for reducing the magnitude of environmental impacts related to the production of durable manufactured products. The study found that remanufacturing can reduce the amount of contributors and environmental stressors that may lead to ecological impacts. The ecological categories- 1) ozone depletion, 2) acidification, 3)ecotoxicity, 4)eutrophication, 5) global warming, 6) human health cancer, 7) human health non-cancer, 8) human health criteria, 9) photochemical smog, 10) fossil fuel use and 11) water use- evaluated by the software tool constitute the conclusion parameters to determine whether or not remanufacturing accounts for sustainability. LCA results show benefits in nine of the categories analyzed, suggesting that remanufacturing comprises a superior choice in environmental terms

Ground extraction from 3D lidar point clouds with the Classification Learner App (2018) 26th Mediterranean Conference on Control and Automation, Zadar, Croatia, June 2018, pp.400-405. DOI: PendingGround extraction from three-dimensional (3D) range data is a relevant problem for outdoor navigation of unmanned ground vehicles. Even if this problem has received attention with specific heuristics and segmentation approaches, identification of ground and non-ground points can benefit from state-of-the-art classification methods, such as those included in the Matlab Classification Learner App. This paper proposes a comparative study of the machine learning methods included in this tool in terms of training times as well as in their predictive performance. With this purpose, we have combined three suitable features for ground detection, which has been applied to an urban dataset with several labeled 3D point clouds. Most of the analyzed techniques achieve good classification results, but only a few offer low training and prediction times. This work was partially supported by the Spanish project DPI 2015- 65186-R. Reinforcement Learning using Gaussian Processes for Discretely Controlled Continuous Processes

    Get PDF
In many application domains such as autonomous avionics, power electronics and process systems engineering there exist discretely controlled continuous processes (DCCPs) which constitute a special subclass of hybrid dynamical systems. We introduce a novel simulation-based approach for DDCPs optimization under uncertainty using Rein-forcement Learning with Gaussian Process models to learn the transitions dynamics descriptive of mode execution and an optimal switching policy for mode selection. Each mode implements a parameterized feedback control law until a stopping condition trig-gers. To deal with the size/dimension of the state space and a continuum of control mode parameters, Bayesian active learning is proposed using a utility function that trades off information content with policy improvement. Throughput maximization in a buffer tank subject to an uncertain schedule of sev-eral inflow discharges is used as case study address-ing supply chain control in manufacturing systemsFil: de Paula, Mariano. Data Sources Integrator for Management by Indicators

    Get PDF
This current work exposes the research and development of a tool for the integration of data sources in the context of management by indicators. The main benefits of this research are the administrators of databases that will work with a powerful tool that will allow them to effectively manage the updating of indicators previously defined by information managers. These information managers are the most interested in that the indicators are updated in the databases for the taking of decisions which will directly benefit them. This work gives rise to a thesis in Systems Engineering and the result could be applied in the TIC direction of the Faculty of Exact Sciences as it is expressed in the case study, taking part of the Strategic Plan of Engineers Formation promoted by the Secretary of University Policies.XV Workshop Bases de Datos y Minería de Datos (WBDDM)Red de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

Thandarum hernandezi, a new genus and new species of sea cucumber family Sclerodactylidae (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea: Dendrochirotida) from the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean

    Get PDF
A new genus and a new species of dendrochirotid, Thandarum hernandezi gen. et sp. nov., is described from Buenos Aires coast in the Southwestern Atlantic. For this species is quite significant the body U shape, up to 14.08 mm (along the trivium), with double row of podia restricted to the ambulacra. Other features are ossicles from body wall with buttons and 4 pillar tables, tube feet with rods and end plate star-shaped; the introvert with rosettes and tentacles with rods. These characteristics require the recognition of a new genus, and the new species and represents the first sclerodactylid reported in Argentinean waters.Fil: Martinez, Mariano Ignacio. Corallimorpharians (Anthozoa: Corallimorpharia) from the Argentinean Sea

    Get PDF
Corallimorpharians are a relative small group of anthozoan cnidarians, also known as jewel sea anemones. They resemble actiniarian sea anemones in lacking a skeleton and being solitary, but resemble scleractinian corals in external and internal morphology, and they are considered to be the sister group of the stony corals. Corynactis carnea (=Sphincteractis sanmatiensis) is a small, common and eye catching species that inhabits the shallow water of northern Patagonia and the Argentinean shelf up to 200 m depth. Corallimorphus rigidus is registered for the first time from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. It is a rather big and rare species that inhabits only the deep sea. Only two specimens were found at 2934 m depth in Mar del Plata submarine canyon, in an area under the influence of the Malvinas current, which may explain its occurrence. These two species are the only two known jewel sea anemones in the Argentinean sea and are reported and described herein.Fil: Lauretta, Daniel Marcelo. Echinoderms diversity in the Southwestern Atlantic

    Get PDF
Studies of biodiversity of echinoderms from South America have increased in recent years. Here we summarize sampling done on three expeditions along the Argentinean coast (35º - 55º S) and near the Antarctic Peninsula. The first campaign, Mejillón II (M-II; 2009), was carried out between 35º - 39º S and covered a depth range between 10 to 140 m. The second was part of the Summer Antarctic Campaign 2011 (CAV-III; 2011) that took place around the Antarctic Peninsula, South Shetland and South Orkney Islands (depth range between 67 to 754 m). The last cruise was the final stretch of the Summer Antarctic Campaign 2011 (CAV-IV; 2011), from 39º - 55º S and between 30 - 140 m depth. As result, 74 stations have been studied, of which 68 had at least one echinoderm specimen. From the total number of stations, the occurrence percentages for each class were Asteroidea (68 %), Echinoidea (64 %), Ophiuroidea (55 %), Holothuroidea (51 %) and Crinoidea (20 %). In the M-II campaign, echinoderms were presented in 94 % of the sampled stations, with Echinoidea most frequent (74 %). In the CAV-III campaign echinoderms were presented in all the stations; Ophiuroidea were found in all stations. The lowest occurrence of echinoderms was found in the CAV-IV campaign (82 %), where Asteroidea was present in the 73 % of the samples, and crinoids were absent.Fil: Martinez, Mariano Ignacio. Experimental study of the effect of the wake generated by oscillating gurney flap

    Get PDF
The study of the turbulent near wake of an airfoil provided with flow control devices shows the flow configuration in such conditions and the starting vortices mechanism, while, the far wake of-fers information about the general performance of the model. The objective of the present work is to study the develop of the fluid-dynamic structures found in the NACA 4412 airfoil wake, as well as the develop-ment of the same structures when flow control tech-niques are applied by means of a oscillating Gurney Flap place in the lower surface of the wing model, close to the trailing edge. Tests were performed at a given Reynolds numbers and the flow control system was set at different frequencies. In order to study the effect of the control mechanism on the wake, hot wire anemometry techniques were used. Two components of the velocity vector were measured - longitudinal and vertical - by means of a vertical array of three sensors acquiring simultaneously. The intention is to quantify the flow general configuration at the airfoil wake for different test conditions. The velocity vectors will be analyzed, together with the turbulence inten-sity and integral scales.Fil: Marañon Di Leo, Julio. Universidad Nacional de La Plata. Facultad de Ingeniería.
