The resulting rub induced clearance changes, and engine performance changes were then analyzed to validate and refine the JT9D-7A short term performance deterioration model

    We provide a review of the current status of several topics on the ages, distances, and mass functions of open clusters, with a particular emphasis on illuminating the areas of uncertainty. Hipparcos has obtained parallaxes for nearby open clusters that have expected accuracies much better than has been previously achievable. By using the lithium depletion boundary method and isochrone fitting based on much improved new theoretical evolutionary models for low mass stars, it is arguable that we will soon have have much better age scales for clusters and star-forming regions. With improved optical and near-IR cameras, we are just now beginning to extend the mass function of open clusters like the Pleiades into the regime below the hydrogen burning mass limit. Meanwhile, observations in star-forming regions are in principle capable of identifying objects down to of order 10 Jupiter masses.Comment: 13 pages, including 3 embedded figures (4 EPS files).     TeV Cherenkov Events as Bose-Einstein Gamma Condensations

    The recent detection of gamma radiation from Mkn 501 at energies as high as 25 TeV suggests stringent upper bounds on the diffuse, far infrared, extragalactic radiation density. The production of electron-positron pairs through photon-photon collisions would prevent gamma photons of substantially higher energies from reaching us across distances of order 100 Mpc. However, coherently arriving TeV or sub-TeV gammas - Bose-Einstein condensations of photons at these energies - could mimic the Cherenkov shower signatures of extremely energetic gammas.     An ab initio study of the C3(+) cation using multireference methods

    The energy difference between the linear 2 sigma(sup +, sub u) and cyclic 2B(sub 2) structures of C3(+) has been investigated using large (5s3p2d1f) basis sets and multireference electron correlation treatments, including complete active space self consistent fields (CASSCF), multireference configuration interaction (MRCI), and averaged coupled-pair functional (ACPF) methods, as well as the single-reference quadratic configuration interaction (QCISD(T)) method. Our best estimate, including a correction for basis set incompleteness, is that the linear form lies above the cyclic from by 5.2(+1.5 to -1.0) kcal/mol. The 2 sigma(sup +, sub u) state is probably not a transition state, but a local minimum. Reliable computation of the cyclic/linear energy difference in C3(+) is extremely demanding of the electron correlation treatment used: of the single-reference methods previously considered, CCSD(T) and QCISD(T) perform best. The MRCI + Q(0.01)/(4s2p1d) energy separation of 1.68 kcal/mol should provide a comparison standard for other electron correlation methods applied to this system

    Localized exciton-polariton modes in dye-doped nanospheres: a quantum approach

    We model a dye-doped polymeric nanosphere as an ensemble of quantum emitters and use it to investigate the localized exciton-polaritons supported by such a nanosphere. By determining the time evolution of the density matrix of the collective system, we explore how an incident laser field may cause transient optical field enhancement close to the surface of such nanoparticles. Our results provide further evidence that excitonic materials can be used to good effect in nanophotonics.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure
