    Seasonal and topographic variations in porewaters of a southeastern USA salt marsh as revealed by voltammetric profiling†

    We report electrochemical profiles from unvegetated surficial sediments of a Georgia salt marsh. In creek bank sediments, the absence of ΣH(2)S or FeS(aq )and the presence of Fe(III)–organic complexes suggest that Mn and Fe reduction dominates over at least the top ca. 5 cm of the sediment column, consistent with other recent results. In unvegetated flats, accumulation of ΣH(2)S indicates that SO(4)(2- )reduction dominates over the same depth. A summer release of dissolved organic species from the dominant tall form Spartina alterniflora, together with elevated temperatures, appears to result in increased SO(4)(2- )reduction intensity and hence high summer concentrations of ΣH(2)S in flat sediments. However, increased bioturbation and/or bioirrigation seem to prevent this from happening in bank sediments. Studies of biogeochemical processes in salt marshes need to take such spatial and temporal variations into account if we are to develop a good understanding of these highly productive ecosystems. Furthermore, multidimensional analyses are necessary to obtain adequate quantitative pictures of such heterogeneous sediments

    Spatial heterogeneity in projected leprosy trends in India

    Background: Leprosy is caused by infection with Mycobacterium leprae and is characterized by peripheral nerve damage and skin lesions. The disease is classified into paucibacillary (PB) and multibacillary (MB) leprosy. The 2012 London Declaration formulated the following targets for leprosy control: (1) global interruption of transmission or elimination by 2020, and (2) reduction of grade-2 disabilities in newly detected cases to below 1 per million population at a global level by 2020. Leprosy is treatable, but diagnosis, access to treatment and treatment adherence (all necessary to curtail transmission) represent major challenges. Globally, new case detection rates for leprosy have remained fairly stable in the past decade, with India responsible for more than half of cases reported annually. Methods: We analyzed publicly available data from the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and fit linear mixed-effects regression models to leprosy case detection trends reported at the district level. We assessed correlation of the new district-level case detection rate for leprosy with several state-level regressors: TB incidence, BCG coverage, fraction of cases exhibiting grade 2 disability at diagnosis, fraction of cases in children, and fraction multibacillary. Results: Our analyses suggest an endemic disease in very slow decline, with substantial spatial heterogeneity at both district and state levels. Enhanced active case finding was associated with a higher case detection rate. Conclusions: Trend analysis of reported new detection rates from India does not support a thesis of rapid progress in leprosy control

Dans une première partie nous passons en revue les principales échelles de variabilité des stocks de carbone des sols et nous en tirons des recommandations quant aux techniques à utiliser pour leur estimation et des considérations sur les incertitudes associées à ces estimations. Nous analysons ensuite les conséquences de cette variabilité sur la faisabilité de la détection de changements au cours du temps et sur l’optimisation des dispositifs de surveillance in situ. Dans une dernière partie nous comparons différentes techniques analytiques et nous développons l’apport potentiel que pourraient représenter les techniques de spectrométrie infra-rouge

    Ewald methods for inverse power-law interactions in tridimensional and quasi-two dimensional systems

    In this paper, we derive the Ewald method for inverse power-law interactions in quasi-two dimensional systems. The derivation is done by using two different analytical methods. The first uses the Parry's limit, that considers the Ewald methods for quasi-two dimensional systems as a limit of the Ewald methods for tridimensional systems, the second uses Poisson-Jacobi identities for lattice sums. Taking into account the equivalence of both derivations, we obtain a new analytical Fourier transform intregral involving incomplete gamma function. Energies of the generalized restrictive primitive model of electrolytes (η\eta-RPM) and of the generalized one component plasma model (η\eta-OCP) are given for the tridimensional, quasi-two dimensional and monolayers systems. Few numerical results, using Monte-Carlo simulations, for η\eta-RPM and η\eta-OCP monolayers systems are reported.Comment: to be published in Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical (19 pages, 2 figures and 3 tables

    Midlatitude Cirrus Clouds and Multiple Tropopauses from a 2002-2006 Climatology over the SIRTA Observatory

    This study present a comparison of lidar observations of midlatitude cirrus clouds over the SIRTA observatory between 2002 and 2006 with multiple tropopauses (MT) retrieved from radiosounding temperature profiles. The temporal variability of MT properties (frequency, thickness) are discussed. Results show a marked annual cycle, with MT frequency reaching its lowest point in May (~18% occurrence of MT) and slowly rising to more than 40% in DJF. The average thickness of the MT also follows an annual cycle, going from less than 1 km in spring to 1.5 km in late autumn. Comparison with lidar observations show that cirrus clouds show a preference for being located close below the 1st tropopause. When the cloud top is above the 1st tropopause (7% of observations), in 20% of cases the cloud base is above it as well, resulting in a cirrus cloud "sandwiched" between the two tropopauses. Compared to the general distribution of cirrus, cross-tropopause cirrus show a higher frequency of large optical depths, while inter-tropopause cirrus show almost exclusively low optical depths (Tau < 0.03 in 90% of cases) typical of subvisible clouds. Results suggest the occurrence of inter-tropopause cirrus clouds is correlated with the frequency of multiple tropopauses

    Farmers’ Accessibility to Pesticides and Generalization of Farming Practices besides the Legal Framework in Northern Bafou, in the Bamboutos Mountains (West Cameroon)

    The use of pesticides improves farmers’ potential yield, but handling them with inexperienced hands increases the risk of human contamination and environmental pollution, and also reduces any prospect of sustainable agricultural development. Based on semi-structured interviews with pesticides dealers and other resource persons on the one hand, and a questionnaire administered to 120 households in the locality of Northern Bafou, this study highlights the environmental challenges posed by the widespread uncontrolled use of plant protection products. There is a wide range of pesticides found in Northern Bafou, marketed by  dealers in different categories, ranging from authorized and unauthorized shops to unskilled street vendors, whose essentially mercantile objective has led to the availability of these products even to peasants not always aware of the dangers incurred by their misuse. This dysfunction contrasts with the existence of an expanded legal and institutional framework in Cameroon for the management of pesticides, that is not implemented effectively

    We use optimal transportation techniques to show uniqueness of the compactly supported weak solutions of the relativistic Vlasov-Darwin system. Our proof extends the method used by Loeper in J.
