Deformation of formal schemes through local homology
We define the cotangent complex of a morphism of locally noetherian formal schemes as an object in the derived category through local homology. We discuss its basic properties and establish the basics results of a deformation theory, providing a characterization of smooth and étale morphisms. This leads to simpler lifting results depending on a differential module, for a class of non-smooth morphism of usual schemes. We also give descriptions of the cotangent complex in the case of regular closed immersions and complete intersection morphisms of formal schemes.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación | Ref. Atmospheric mercury: Long-term (Late Pleistocene – Holocene) variations in mercury accumulation reconstructed using environmental archives
Mercury (Hg) is a naturally occurring element that is found throughout the world. Due to the toxicity of its methylated forms (MeHg) to wildlife and human health, Hg is considered a metal of major environmental concern. According to numerous health and governmental organizations, billions of people are currently at risk of high exposure to poisoning by Hg due to a diet rich in fish (high content of MeHg) or by exposure to Hg emitted from artisanal and small-scale gold mining, mainly in low- and middle-income countries.
Several industrial processes such as fuel combustion, cement production, metal smelting, large-scale gold mining with non-Hg methods as well as commercial Hg mining, has been emitted thousands of tons of Hg directly to the atmosphere since 1850. In addition to human related processes, several natural processes emit Hg to the environment, such as volcanic activity (geothermal vents, volcanoes) and emissions from natural enriched soils. Other types of Hg cycling mechanisms such as forest fires or oceanic emissions are considered mixed natural-anthropogenic sources.
Primary sources transfer Hg from slow-cycling lithospheric reservoirs to the fast cycling atmospheric, oceanic and the terrestrial environments, thereby increasing the global pool of Hg in surface reservoirs. After deposition, Hg can be reemitted from the surface reservoirs to the atmosphere, therefore constituting a secondary source. Recycling from surface reservoirs results in an effective lifetime of 1.6 years before transfer to soil and deep ocean pools. Due to its volatility as Hg0 and the redox transformations of Hg in the environment, deposition and release are influenced by multiple environmental factors including seasonality, vegetation cover, temperature, light, moisture, atmospheric turbulence and the presence of reactants
redes y encuentros, es, por tanto, un fenómeno ‘en tránsito’.We are interested in investigating the formation of a physical space which, devoted to virtual
connexions and information, becomes a real ‘meeting point’. We want to propose through
architecture the merging of ‘sites’ for both virtual and material social networks. Information
Technology has re-configured the social relations of human beings. Information has opened up
communication spaces, and has given depth and quality to our limited daily time. These are
spaces that re-invent the relationship between collective and private spaces, formation and
information, communication and dialogue.
Which meeting places of these intangible spaces can be designed from the tangible
production of architecture?
Only on few occasions has architecture proposed a setting in which information and space can
interact. This is the reason why our research is centered on architecture as the medium for
multitude programmes, functions and timings: that means, being a programmable
‘hardware’. We are investigating how to propose a ‘multipotential’ space, where the flows of
users and visitors may enter and where citizens may interact among others. That is
architecture that holds active social ‘software’.
We propose to do less architecture to allow more ‘gathering events’ to happen: a principle of
basic ecology that makes integral sustainability possible as a constructive, economical and
social objective. All social centres are more than a just a place, they are a process where
new neighbourhood forms are articulated with ‘agents’ and ‘places’ that are nearby but also
with others that are geographic and culturally more remote.
We present three examples where we have proposed such processes: the already built Social
Cyber Centre Macarena Tres Huertas (Seville); a competition and a participative ‘action’ for
a Logo for Participative Budgets at the Seville Council; and an investigation about vacant
housing presented at Foro Barriadas: new urban centres(Andalusian Goverment).
We think in such places ‘presence’ (citizenry) is more important than ‘permanency’
(buildings), where architecture, in this world of networks and meeting places, is a
phenomena in transit
Fiscal data revisions in Europe
Public deficit figures are subject to revisions, as most macroeconomic aggregates are. Nevertheless, in the case of Europe, the latter could be particularly worrisome given the role of fiscal data in the functioning of EU’s multilateral surveillance rules. Adherence to such rules is judged upon initial releases of data, in the framework of the so-called Excessive Deficit Procedure (EDP) Notifications. In addition, the lack of reliability of fiscal data may hinder the credibility of fiscal consolidation plans. In this paper we document the empirical properties of revisions to annual government deficit figures in Europe by exploiting the information contained in a pool of real-time vintages of data pertaining to fifteen EU countries over the period 1995-2008. We build up such real-time dataset from official publications. Our main findings are as follows: (i) preliminary deficit data releases are biased and non-efficient predictors of subsequent releases, with later vintages of data tending to show larger deficits on average; (ii) such systematic bias in deficit revisions is a general feature of the sample, and cannot solely be attributed to the behaviour of a small number of countries, even though the Greek case is clearly an outlier; (iii) Methodological improvements and clarifications stemming from Eurostat’s decisions that may lead to data revisions explain a significant share of the bias, providing some evidence of window dressing on the side of individual countries; (iv) expected real GDP growth, political cycles and the strength of fiscal rules also contribute to explain revision patterns; (v) nevertheless, if the systematic bias is excluded, revisions can be considered rational after two years.
The Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) surgical technique is used in veterinary surgery to limit cranial tibial translation during canine gait, lengthening the lever arm of the quadriceps in Anterior Cruciate Ligament-deficient (ACL-deficient) stifle joints. It is know that after TTA, the patellofemoral pressure decreases, but the Patellar Tendon (PT) behavior has not been observed experimentally yet. This study measures the PT force under caudal femoral drawer at knee flexion angles from 135° to 90° in intact and pathological knee to asses the effect of TTA on the tendon. Five fresh cadaveric adult canine stifle joint were tested in an apparatus in which muscle forces of the canine hind limb were simulated. Each knee was tested in three different conditions: intact, ACL-deficient and with TTA. PT force was measured using a electrical transducer. The greater the joint flexion angles, the greater the PT force. The knee average force of the five specimens in 90º flexion were 28.4 ± 3.2 Newtons (N) for the intact, 28.2 ± 3.4 N for the ACL-deficient and 24.9 ± 2 N for the TTA knee, which decreased compared to the healthy knee, so TTA generates a loosening of the PT force. The PT force showed a fast rate of change in the operated knee because of a shift in the pattern of knee flexion, so the biomechanics of the entire joint could be influenced by the TTA technique.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
The tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) is a surgical technique used to repair cranial cruciate ligament-deficient (CrCL-deficient) canine knees. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of TTA on caudal cruciate ligament (CaCL) under femoral anterior force, in a 135° joint extension angle; and the role of CaCL in an CrCLdeficient knee. Five fresh cadaveric adult canine stifle joints were tested in an apparatus in which muscle forces were simulated. Each knee was tested in three different conditions: intact, CrCLdeficient knee and with TTA surgery. Shear force (Newtons, N) and CaCL deformation (millimetres, mm) were measured using sensors and the ligament rigidity (force divided by deformation, N/mm) was calculated and compared between the three knees. The mean rigiditiy values increased from intact knee, 104.4 N/mm (SD 3.6), to CrCL-deficient knee, 136.5 N/mm (SD 7.5). However, the rigidity was even greater when applying the TTA, 257.2 N/ mm (SD 21.1). Since, stress on the CaCL in CrCL-deficient knees was greater than in intact knees, the ligament assumed a more important role. On the other hand, the TTA technique generates an overload on the CaCL until rigidity exceeds its load-bearing capacity. Although the in-vitro models are far from reality, these findings suggest the need to further study the effects of TTA on the CaCL.El avance de la tuberosidad tibial (ATT) es una técnica quirúrgica usada para reparar la lesion de Ligamento Cruzado Craneal (LCCr) en la rodilla canina.
Implementation of a phonological awareness program for improving reading in children of the first grade of Primary Education
