How are gene sequences analyses modifying bacterial taxonomy? The case of Klebsiella

    Get PDF
Bacterial names are continually being changed in order to more adequately describe natural groups (the units of microbial diversity) and their relationships. The problems in Klebsiella taxonomy are illustrative and common to other bacterial genera. Like other bacteria, Klebsiella spp. were isolated long ago, when methods to identify and classify bacteria were limited. However, recently developed molecular approaches have led to taxonomical revisions in several cases or to sound proposals of novel species. [Int Microbiol 2004; 7(4):261-268

Financial literacy and risk-taking propensity as predictors of undergraduates' entrepreneurial intention

    Get PDF
Entrepreneurial intention, as one of the best entrepreneurship predictors, is related to the individual's choice to start a new business. Entrepreneurship education is, without a doubt, the topic that arouses the greatest interest in the entrepreneurship research community. However, empirical evidence is contradictory regarding the influence of entrepreneurship education on entrepreneurial intention, leading academics to the recent claim to delve into the existing heterogeneity regarding the relationship between knowledge, skills and competencies and entrepreneurial intention. Consequently, this article proposes individuals' financial literacy as a relevant predictor of undergraduates' entrepreneurial intention. Financial literacy-entrepreneurship evidence is scarce and limited: (1) they do not focus on entrepreneurial intention; (2) they incompletely measure the multidimensional construct of financial literacy; (3) they do not analyse undergraduates, despite being an important starting point for entrepreneurship. Therefore, this article applies covariance-based structural equation models to 568 Spanish undergraduates with business and tourism degrees to obtain the impact of financial literacy (measured through its three dimensions, i.e., financial knowledge, attitude, and behaviour) on entrepreneurial intention through the mediating role of risk-taking propensity. The results show that: (1) financial knowledge positively influences indirectly; (2) financial attitude negatively influences indirectly; (3) financial behaviour positively influences both directly and indirectly. These findings are highly relevant for the entrepreneurship research community in general and policymakers in particular since we demonstrate the entrepreneurial potential derived from undergraduates' financial literacy thanks to the mediating role of risk-taking propensity, which establishes a novel channel to promote entrepreneurship and, thus, solve the serious youth unemployment problems.Ministerio de Educación y Formación Profesional. This article uses covariance-based structural equation models in a sample of 568 Spanish undergraduates to provide evidence on the impact of financial literacy (measured through its three dimensions, that is, financial knowledge, attitude, and behaviour) on entrepreneurial intention through the mediating role of the risk-taking propensity. The results show that: (i) financial knowledge has an indirect positive impact; (ii) financial attitude has an indirect negative impact; (iii) financial behaviour has a positive impact both directly and indirectly. These findings are highly relevant in demonstrating the mechanism that explains the relationship between financial literacy and entrepreneurial intention considering the role of risk-taking propensity, an important channel to promote youth entrepreneurship.Universidad de Málaga. Acquisition activity: do firm age and family control matter?

    Get PDF
This article examines the relationship between firm age and acquisition activity and how family and non-family firms differ in the number of acquisitions they undertake. Inspired by previous research requiring firm age as a focal aspect and literature studying the antecedents of acquisitions, we draw on the SEW perspective to test our hypotheses based on the analysis of the acquisition activity of Asia-Pacific public firms. Our empirical findings support a U-shaped relationship between firm age and acquisition activity. Moreover, the findings reveal that family firms engage in fewer acquisitions than non-family firms irrespective of the age of the firm.Funding for open Access charge: Universidad de Málaga / CBU

This research purpose was the design of a pedagogical proposal that contributes to the musical awareness of the hearing impaired population of the Institución Educativa Normal Superior in Neiva city, as a way to contribute in the didactics of inclusive music education, applying a qualitative research methodological approach, with an exploratory, descriptive and participatory design, using documentary analysis, participant observation and interview as instruments for data collection. The sample of the study population considered 12 deaf children, out of 48 in total that exists in the afternoon session, with diversity in their hearing impairment, with whom a series of musical perception workshops were conducted, exposing them to the vibrations and qualities of music. It was found that the deaf population under study, has a great affinity with music, but little approach, because they have not been allowed to access it, much less include it in their curriculum, violating the right to attend music class with their hearing peers. In general, it is concluded that in art there are no barriers and that, undoubtedly, there are no better or worse ways of perceiving music, but simply different and equally valid for everyone, generating a search for actions that allow the acceptance of the deaf person as an individual, who, because of their linguistic difference, needs additional and specialized support.

Analysis of the bacterial diversity associated with the roots of maize ( Zea mays L.) through culture-dependent and culture-independent methods

    Get PDF
The present study investigated bacterial diversity associated with the roots of maize through the use of culture-dependent and culture-independent methods. Bacterial 16S–23S rDNA internal transcribed spacer sequences (ITS) primers were used to amplify sequences obtained directly from the root matrix by Percoll gradient separation. This assay showed that ã-Proteobacteria within Enterobacter, Erwinia, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, and Stenotrophomonas genera were predominant groups. The culturable component of the bacterial community was also assessed, revealing that the predominant group was Firmicutes, mainly of Bacillus genus, while Achromobacter, Lysinibacillus, and Paenibacillus genera were rarely found in association with the roots. Only two genera within ã-Proteobacteria, Enterobacter and Pseudomonas, were found in the culture collection. Differences in richness and diversity between the rhizospheric and endophytic bacterial communities were also evidenced. The spectrum of bacteria naturally associated with maize roots is wide and the magnitude of such diversity will depend on the methods chosen for analysis. The knowledge of this spectrum will facilitate the search of microorganisms capable of exerting antagonism to diverse pathogens or detecting plant growth enhancersFil: Pereira, Paola Patricia. The Symbiome of Llaveia Cochineals (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Monophlebidae) Includes a Gammaproteobacterial Cosymbiont Sodalis TME1 and the Known Candidatus Walczuchella monophlebidarum

The genome and transcriptome of the endosymbiotic flavobacterium Candidatus Walczuchella monophlebidarum revealed its role in the synthesis of essential amino acids for its host, the wax cochineal Llaveia axin axin. There were, however, missing genes in the endosymbiont for some biosynthetic pathways. Here, we characterized TME1, another cochineal symbiont that may metabolically complement Walczuchella. TME1 was ascribed to the gammaproteobacterial genus Sodalis on a phylogenomic basis using gene sequences from 143 proteins core genome sequences and the core average nucleotide identity (ANI) confirmed its position. Additionally, we describe Sodalis as a coherent genus. TME1 genome is around 3.4 Mb and has complete gene sequences for the biosynthesis of 10 essential amino acids, for polyamines, flagella, nitrate respiration, and detoxification among many others. Transcripts from ovaries and bacteriomes allowed the identification of differentially transcribed genes from the endosymbionts and host. Highly transcribed genes were identified in TME1 and transcripts involved in amino acid biosynthesis were found. We review here that cosymbionts that derived from different bacterial classes and genera seem to be advantageous for insects that have Flavobacteria as the primary endosymbionts
