Composite polymer membranes for laserinduced fluorescence thermometry
We demonstrate a modified version of laser-induced fluorescence thermometry (LIFT) for mapping temperature gradients in the vicinity of small photothermal devices. Our approach is based on temperature sensitive fluorescent membranes fabricated with rhodamine B and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Relevant membrane features for LIFT, such as temperature sensitivity, thermal quenching and photobleaching are presented for a range of 25 °C to 90 °C, and their performance is evaluated upon obtaining the temperature gradients produced in the proximity of optical fiber micro-heaters. Our results show that temperature measurements in regions as small as 750 μm x 650 μm, with a temperature resolution of 1 °C, can be readily obtained
Replication of Micro Laser Textures by Injection Molding
AbstractIncreasingly micro technology becomes more important in order to develop new products with high added value. These new technologies known as micro allow us manufacturing precision components; these new micro components should work and take carrying out the functions previously performed by larger parts. Microinjection is one of these new technologies. This has the capacity to produce parts, for different materials both plastic and metal and for some industries and applications. The main objective in this paper is to determine the replicate microtextures capability for plastic injection molds. For our samples, ABS plastic is injected into four aluminum cavities with different laser textures performed in, using different technologies to get them. In order to analyze how mold texture affects parts, optical interferometry technique was selected to measure it. The superficial topography obtained was processed using MountainsMapTM software, in order to get the replicability of injected parts. It has also been used an electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate the mold textures and injected parts in a photographically way
Shine bright or live long: substituent effects in [Cu(N^N)(P^P)]+-based light-emitting electrochemical cells where N^N is a 6-substituted 2,2'-bipyridine
We report [Cu(P^P)(N^N)][PF6] complexes with P^P = bis(2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl)ether (POP) or 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene (xantphos) and N^N = 6-methyl-2,2′-bipyridine (Mebpy), 6-ethyl-2,2′-bipyridine (Etbpy), 6,6′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine (Me2bpy) or 6-phenyl-2,2′-bipyridine (Phbpy). The crystal structures of [Cu(POP)(Phbpy)][PF6]·Et2O, [Cu(POP)(Etbpy)][PF6]·Et2O, [Cu(xantphos)(Me2bpy)][PF6], [Cu(xantphos)(Mebpy)][PF6]·CH2Cl2·0.4Et2O, [Cu(xantphos)(Etbpy)][PF6]·CH2Cl2·1.5H2O and [Cu(xantphos)(Phbpy)][PF6] are described; each copper(I) centre is distorted tetrahedral. In the crystallographically determined structures, the N^N domain in [Cu(xantphos)(Phbpy)]+ and [Cu(POP)(Phbpy)]+ is rotated ∼180° with respect to its orientation in [Cu(xantphos)(Mebpy)]+, [Cu(POP)(Etbpy)]+ and [Cu(xantphos)(Etbpy)]+; in each complex containing xantphos, the xanthene ‘bowl’ retains the same conformation in the solid-state structures. The two conformers resulting from the 180° rotation of the N^N ligand were optimized at the B3LYP-D3/(6-31G**+LANL2DZ) level and are close in energy for each complex. Variable temperature NMR spectroscopy evidences the presence of two conformers of [Cu(xantphos)(Phbpy)]+ in solution which are related by inversion of the xanthene unit. The complexes exhibit MLCT absorption bands in the range 378 to 388 nm, and excitation into each MLCT band leads to yellow emissions. Photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) increase from solution to thin-film and powder; the highest PLQYs are observed for powdered [Cu(xantphos)(Mebpy)][PF6] (34%), [Cu(xantphos)(Etbpy)][PF6] (37%) and [Cu(xantphos)(Me2bpy)][PF6] (37%) with lifetimes of 9.6–11 μs. Density functional theory calculations predict that the emitting triplet (T1) involves an electron transfer from the Cu–P^P environment to the N^N ligand and therefore shows a 3MLCT character. T1 is calculated to be ∼0.20 eV lower in energy than the first singlet excited state (S1). The [Cu(P^P)(N^N)][PF6] ionic transition-metal (iTMC) complexes were tested in light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). Turn-on times are fast, and the LEC with [Cu(xantphos)(Me2bpy)][PF6] achieves a maximum efficacy of 3.0 cd A−1 (luminance = 145 cd m−2) with a lifetime of 1 h; on going to the [Cu(xantphos)(Mebpy)][PF6]-based LEC, the lifetime exceeds 15 h but at the expense of the efficacy (1.9 cd A−1). The lifetimes of LECs containing [Cu(xantphos)(Etbpy)][PF6] and [Cu(POP)(Etbpy)][PF6] exceed 40 and 80 h respectively
Greenhouse effect gases emission implications on sustainability of the Campus of Vegazana, University of León
En este trabajo se presentan los resultados del estudio de emisiones de CO2, uno de los gases más importantes de efecto invernadero, debido a la actividad desarrollada en el Campus de Vegazana de la Universidad de León, para el año 2006. El estudio se enmarca en un proyecto más amplio de cálculo del indicador Huella Ecológica (HE), desarrollado para conocer en qué medida se
alcanzan los objetivos de sostenibilidad establecidos para el Campus, así como para el desarrollo de propuestas encaminadas a la reducción de las emisiones de CO2.
Los resultados obtenidos reflejan como el área de superficie biológicamente productiva necesaria para absorber las emisiones del Campus constituyen cerca del 99% del área total de HE. La mayor parte de estas emisiones proceden del gasto energético para electricidad (38%) y uso térmico (24%, seguido del transporte (19%) y la construcción del propio complejo universitario (16%, el cual hace referencia únicamente al año 2006, considerando una vida útil de 27 años para los edificios e instalaciones del Campus, inaugurado en 1979.
Una vez analizadas cualitativa y cuantitativamente las emisiones producidas, se ha buscado conocer el total de superficie forestal necesaria para absorber dichas emisiones, considerando los
datos del Tercer Inventario Forestal Nacional (2003) sobre cobertura de las masas forestales para el territorio nacional, y los aportados por Bravo (2007) en relación a las tasas de fijación del gas por parte de éstas. Como conclusión, puede estimarse que del total de la superficie forestal de la
provincia de León, un 0.46% es necesaria como depósito y sumidero del CO2 emitido por el Campus de Vegazana (8.470.168 toneladas. Esta estimación se ha realizado considerando que las masas forestales son las únicas depositarias de CO2, tarea compartida en la naturaleza, no obstante, con el suelo, el agua y los cultivosIn this work, we present the results obtained about the CO2 emissions, one of the most important greenhouse gases, due to the normal activity developed in the Campus of Vegazana of the University of León for the year 2006. This study is all part of a wider project for evaluating the Fingerprint ecological indicator (HE, initially developed for assessing if the sustainability
objectives established by the University policies for the Campus of Vegazana have been
achieved, as well as the development of proposals and ideas directed towards the reduction of the emissions of CO2.
Results obtained showed that the biologically productive area necessary for absorbing all emissions are close to the 99% of the total value of HE. The majority of these emissions come from the energy consumed for producing electricity (38%) and heating (24%), followed by the transport (19%) and the constructions of the buildings and infrastructures of the University (16%, which related just for the year 2006, considering a living period of 27 years as it was inaugurated in 1979.
Once analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively the emissions produced, it was developed a method for estimating the total area covered necessary for absorbing them by considering data available from the Third National Forestry Inventory of Spain (2003), related with the forest cover of the territory, and data provided by Bravo(2007, about the absorption rate of the tree
species. As a conclusion, we estimated that form the total area covered by forests of the Province of León, a 0.46% is necessary as sink of the CO2 produced in the Campus of Vegazana (8.470.168 ton. This assessment has been achieved considering that forests are the only warehouse of CO2, when actually soil, water and crops are in nature.Peer Reviewe
Bubble and Dew Point Calculations in Multicomponent and Multireactive Mixtures
Bubble and dew point calculations are useful in chemical engineering and play an important role in the study of separation equipments for non-reactive and reactive mixtures.
To the best of the authors’s knowledge, few methods have been proposed for these calculations in systems with several chemical reactions. The objective of this paper is to introduce new conditions for performing bubble and dew point calculations in reactive
mixtures. We have developed these conditions based on the application of transformed variables of Ung and Doherty (1995). Using these transformed variables, the solution space is restricted to compositions that are already at chemical equilibrium and by consequence the problem dimension is also reduced. The reliability and efficiency of three equation-solving methods are tested and compared using our equilibrium conditions: a) a
simultaneous equation-solving approach using Newton method (SESN),
b) an equation-decoupling approach using successive substitution method (EDSS) and
c) an optimization
approach using the stochastic optimization method Simulated Annealing(OSA).
Our results indicated that even for simple reactive systems, bubble and dew point calculations are challenging for classical equation-solving methods and require robust strategies. We conclude that OSA and EDSS methods are reliable to locate bubble and
dew points in reactive systems. EDSS is more efficient than OSA; however, OSA does not need initial guesses and is more suitable for difficult problems
Visualization of 40 Years of Tropical Cyclone Positions and Their Rainfall

year period (1970–2010) and their relationship with (extremely) heavy rainfall reported by
88 Central American weather stations.
The purpose of the visualization is to associate the paths of tropical cyclones in oceanic
areas with heavy rainfall inland. Thus, the potential for producing a set of rainfall patterns
might somehow help in predicting where different impacts like flooding might occur when
tropical cyclones develop in specific oceanic regions.
The visualization will serve as a key tool for CIGEFI scientists to apply in their work to
determine critical positions of the tropical cyclones associated with extremely heavy rainfall

Analysis of Ostwald ripening in Ni-rich Ni–Ti alloys by diffusion couples
"The coarsening kinetics of gamma' precipitates in Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloys are studied using a Ni-11-5 wt% Ti and pure Ni diffusion couple. The formed concentration gradient allowed to study the aging process at 1023 K (750 degrees C) in Ni-rich Ni Ti alloys with Ti content from 8-62 to 11-15 wt% Ti. In general, during the coarsening of gamma' precipitates, the experimental coarsening kinetics do not fit well to the LSW or TIDC theoretical models and anomalous behaviour of coarsening rate constant (k(r)) associated with gamma' volume-fraction is confirmed at high values.
Fermion contribution to the static quantities of arbitrarily charged vector bosons
We present an analysis of the one-loop contribution from left- and
right-handed fermions to the static electromagnetic properties of an
arbitrarily charged no self-conjugate vector boson . Particular emphasis is
given to the case of a no self-conjugate neutral boson . Regardless the
electric charge of the boson, a fermionic loop can induce the two CP-even
form factors but only one CP-odd. As a result the corresponding electric dipole
moment is directly proportional to the magnetic quadrupole moment. The CP-odd
form factor might be severely suppressed since it requires the presence of both
left- and right-handed fermions. The behavior of the form factors is analyzed
for several scenarios of the fermion masses in the context of the decoupling
