ABSTRACT: This paper analyses the types and different possibilities offered by linguistic corpora, aiming to evaluate the benefits and constraints of their direct use in the classroom. Once this has been described, I inspect the concepts of word, vocabulary and lexical unit. Furthermore, I turn to morphology to examine the processes of affixation and derivation in word formation, and more specifically, how these two processes are approached in the language education curricula in Spain. Finally, I explore the pedagogical bases and most common approaches to learning vocabulary in English, among which we can find the direct use of corpora in the classroom through Data-Driven Learning. To put these elements into practice, the last part of this paper is based on the creation of a learning unit aimed for upper secondary English learners with an intermediate level within the Spanish curricular framework.RESUMEN: En el presente trabajo se analizan los tipos y las diferentes posibilidades ofrecidas por los corpus lingüísticos, con el objetivo de evaluar los beneficios y desventajas de su uso directo en el aula.

Complete vascular rings are originated because of the persistence of the fourth aortic arches, which surround the trachea and esophagus partially or completely, compressing them. The most common type of complete vascular ring is the double aortic arch. Symptoms usually appear in the first months of life, and are provoked by esophageal and tracheal compression. The diagnosis is usually made through the chest X-ray and the esophagogram in patients with dysphagia. We present a case in which the diagnosis of a double aortic arch was made in adulthood, suspected through a spirometry test and a chest X-ray

Multimedia content covers the Web, and we should provide access to all people. For this reason, it is very important to take into account accessibility requirements in the player to avoid barriers and to ensure access to this multimedia content as well as their resources. One of the most frequent barriers is the technological obstacle: the necessity for the user to install the required plug-ins in to order to access video. The new standard HTML5 provides a solution to this problem. However, it does not fully support accessibility requirements of W3C standards, including WCAG and interaction requirement of UAAG. This paper introduces an overall study of this new standard in relation to accessibility requirements for the players as well as an accessible HTML5 Media Player. This research work is supported by the Research Network MAVIR (S2009/TIC-1542 (www.mavir.net/)), GEMMA (TSI-020302-2010-141) and SAGAS (TSI-020100-2010- 184) research projects

Proceeding of: XII Congreso de Interacción Persona-Ordenador (2011).

Proceedings of: The 6th International Conference on Universal Access in Human–Computer Interaction (UAHCI 2011), held as part of The 14th International Conference on Human–Computer Interaction (HCI International 2011), Orlando (FL, USA), July 9-14, 2011Multimedia content covers the Web, and we should provide access to all people. For this reason, we must consider including accessibility requirements in a synchronized manner with the alternative resources such as caption and audio description among others. In addition, it is very important to take into account accessibility requirements in the player to avoid barriers and to ensure access to this multimedia content as well as their resources. This paper presents an overall study on standards and players with accessibility requirements. Moreover, solutions to improve the accessibility features in the YouTube player are presented. Based on this study, we have distinguished a set of guidelines to take into account for including accessibility requirements in players. Furthermore, we suggest an agile evaluation process which indicates the order of accessibility guidelines to check. Finally, the proposed evaluation method is put into practice with a case study: accessibility features are evaluated in three widely used players. This research work is supported by the Research Network MAVIR (S2009/TIC-1542 (see www.mavir.net/)), and GEMMA (TSI-020302-2010-141) and SAGAS (TSI-020100-2010-184) research project

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN WORK-FAMILY CONFLICT AND JOB SATISFACTION: THE MODERATING EFFECT OF GENDER AND THE SALIENCE OF FAMILY AND WORK ROLES

    Get PDF
Work-family conflict has become an issue of particular concern to today’s businesses. Its prevalence among employees and the negative consequences of this conflict for one’s job satisfaction has led it to become one of the problems that managers and directors have to deal with most. Although there have been researches into the relationship between work-family conflict and job satisfaction, few studies have analysed the role of gender in this relationship. The objectives of this study are to analyse the moderating role of gender and of the salience of family and work roles in the work-to-family conflict and general job satisfaction, while the job’s characteristics are controlled. 162 workers from a Spanish public organisation took part in the study. The results from the regression analysis confirms the moderating effect of gender on the relationship between work-to-family conflict and job satisfaction, such that women show a lower level of job satisfaction than men. However, the salience of the family and work roles were not found to have a moderating effect on the aforementioned relationship, neither in the case of men nor in women. The results are discussed in the context of the theory of role identity salience and the gender role theory, as well as the possible cultural effects

WORK FAMILY AND FAMILY WORK CONFLICT: DOES INTRINSIC, EXTRINSIC SATISFACTION MEDIATE THE PREDICTION OF GENERAL JOB SATISFACTION?

    Get PDF
The objective of this study is to analyze the mediating role of intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction in the relationship between the 2 dimensions of work–family conflict—family interfering with work (FIW) and work interfering with family (WIF)—and general job satisfaction. Step-by-step hierarchical regression analyses were carried out on a sample of 151 men and women from a Spanish public organization. The results confirmed the mediating role of intrinsic job satisfaction in the case of FIW. This highlights the importance of taking into account the level of satisfaction with the intrinsic facets of one’s job as a measure for understanding why FIW has a negative impact on general job satisfaction

There is little information on the evaluation of family functioning in adult patients with chronic non-psychiatric illness. The objective of this systematic review was to identify family functioning assessment instruments of known validity and reliability that have been used in health research on patients with a chronic non-psychiatric illness. We conducted a search in three biomedical databases (PubMed, Science Direct, and Web of Science), for original articles available in English or Spanish published between 2000 and 2019. The review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Fourteen articles were included in the review. The instruments Family Assessment Device, Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales, Family Functioning Health and Social Support, Family APGAR, Assessment of Strategies in Families-Effectiveness, Iceland Expressive Family Functioning, Brief Family Assessment Measure-III, and Family Relationship Index were identified. All of them are reliable instruments to evaluate family functioning in chronic patients and could be very valuable to help nurses identify families in need of a psychosocial intervention. The availability and clinical application of these instruments will allow nurses to generate knowledge on family health and care for non-psychiatric chronic conditions, and will eventually contribute to the health and wellbeing of adults with a non-psychiatric chronic disease and their familie
