Background: Coeliac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated systemic disorder elicited by the ingestion of gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. Gluten restriction in CD sufferers leads to numerous limitations in various aspects of daily life and can significantly impact the quality-of-life (QoL). The specific and widely used Coeliac Disease Questionnaire (CDQ) is an excellent tool to evaluate QoL in patients with CD, assessing physical, psychological, and social domains. This questionnaire is unavailable in Spain. Therefore, our study is the first to translate, culturally adapt, validate, and apply the Spanish version of CDQ to a representative sample of Spanish teenagers and adults with CD. Methods: A total of 153 CD participants with biopsy-proven and self-reported gluten-free adherence were included in the cross-sectional study, which included four stages: (1) translation and retranslation of the French CDQ version into Spanish; (2) cultural adaptation and semantic evaluation; (3) CDQ validation through the internal consistency determination and reproducibility of the QoL; and (4) application of the questionnaire to Spanish teenagers and adults with CD and estimation of QoL using EQ-5D. Results: The internal consistency and test–retest reliability of the Spanish CDQ were satisfactory and no ceiling or floor effects were detected. Significant correlations were identified between the CDQ scales, and the instrument for validation covering similar dimensions of the QoL was identified. The mean CDQ total score was 131.03 ± 24.1, and the social domain had the highest rating. There was no correlation between the time spent on a gluten-free diet and QoL. A significantly higher QoL score was reported among males and adolescents in the 15–17 age groups. Conclusion: The newly Spanish CDQ is an appropriate tool to assess the QoL of the teenager and adult patients with CD. This study highlights the importance of identifying the affected scales to address actions to reduce the impact of the gluten-free diet burden of the coeliac patients and maintain public health regulations that support patients with chronic diseases such as CDCentro para el Desarrollo Tecnologico Industrial 20/0112Corporación Tecnológica de Andalucía 20/011

Informativeness of accounting earnings in family firms.

This work examines the relationship between the family control and informativeness of accounting earnings in listed non-financial Spanish companies between 1997 and 2003. The results reveal a negative relationship between the family nature of the controlling shareholder and the credibility of accounting information. Moreover, as the level of voting rights in the hands of the family ultimate owner increases, the informativeness of earnings decreases. Only in family firms where the CEO is hired, the family nature affects positively on the informativeness of accounting earnings.Family firm, reputation, private benefits, informativeness

A Three-Dimensional Dynamic Supramolecular "Sticky Fingers" Organic Framework.

Engineering high-recognition host-guest materials is a burgeoning area in basic and applied research. The challenge of exploring novel porous materials with advanced functionalities prompted us to develop dynamic crystalline structures promoted by soft interactions. The first example of a pure molecular dynamic crystalline framework is demonstrated, which is held together by means of weak "sticky fingers" van der Waals interactions. The presented organic-fullerene-based material exhibits a non-porous dynamic crystalline structure capable of undergoing single-crystal-to-single-crystal reactions. Exposure to hydrazine vapors induces structural and chemical changes that manifest as toposelective hydrogenation of alternating rings on the surface of the [60]fullerene. Control experiments confirm that the same reaction does not occur when performed in solution. Easy-to-detect changes in the macroscopic properties of the sample suggest utility as molecular sensors or energy-storage materials

La labor del síndico en el proceso de verificación de créditos en el concurso preventivo

    Get PDF
Insuficiència cardíaca; Serveis d'urgències mèdiques; MortalitatHeart failure; Emergency service, hospital; MortalityInsuficiencia cardíaca; Servicio hospitalario de urgencias; MortalidadShort stay unit (SSU) is an alternative to conventional hospitalization in patients with acute heart failure (AHF), but the prognosis is not known compared to direct discharge from the emergency department (ED). To determine whether direct discharge from the ED of patients diagnosed with AHF is associated with early adverse outcomes versus hospitalization in SSU. Endpoints, defined as 30-day all-cause mortality or post-discharge adverse events, were evaluated in patients diagnosed with AHF in 17 Spanish EDs with an SSU, and compared by ED discharge vs. SSU hospitalization. Endpoint risk was adjusted for baseline and AHF episode characteristics and in patients matched by propensity score (PS) for SSU hospitalization. Overall, 2358 patients were discharged home and 2003 were hospitalized in SSUs. Discharged patients were younger, more frequently men, with fewer comorbidities, had better baseline status, less infection, rapid atrial fibrillation and hypertensive emergency as the AHF trigger, and had a lower severity of AHF episode. While their 30-day mortality rate was lower than in patients hospitalized in SSU (4.4% vs. 8.1%, p < 0.001), 30-day post-discharge adverse events were similar (27.2% vs. 28.4%, p = 0.599). After adjustment, there were no differences in the 30-day risk of mortality of discharged patients (adjusted HR 0.846, 95% CI 0.637-1.107) or adverse events (1.035, 0.914-1.173). In 337 pairs of PS-matched patients, there were no differences in mortality or risk of adverse event between patients directly discharged or admitted to an SSU (0.753, 0.409-1.397; and 0.858, 0.645-1.142; respectively). Direct ED discharge of patients diagnosed with AHF provides similar outcomes compared to patients with similar characteristics and hospitalized in a SSU.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. BACKGROUNO ANO AIMS. The present research Project has been made mainly with the idea of comparing the tensile strength values and histological answers of threetypes of colon anatomises: sutured with silk and sutureless anastomoses with 2-octyl-cyanocrylate and N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate. Methods. 112 Wistar rats distributed into three groups of 35 animals and a last control group of 7 have been used for this. Group 1: silk, group 2:2-octyl-cyanocrylate, group 3: N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate,group 4: Control group_. The following surgical interventions were practiced on them:A cross section of the colon, followed by: group 1: an end-to-end discontinuous suture anastomoses with Silk; group 2: sutureless anastomoses with 2-octyl-cyanocrylate;group 3:sutureless anastomoses With N-butyl-2-cyanoar1ylate. On the 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th and 50th days we proceeded to measure the anastomoses tensile strength value for each series. In the same period of time we carried out the following anatomic-pathological determinations: a) sharp inflammation; b) oedema; c) non-specif chronic inflammatory infiltrate; d) granulomatous inflammatory infiltrate to foreign e) fibrosis. Results. The results obtained indicate a greater anastomeses tensile strength for group 2 and 3. The anatomic-pathological values show a better response to anastomoses with adhesive than with conventional sutures. CONCLUSIONS. All these experimental results lead us to conclude that the cyanocrilates used to carry out sutureless anastomoses may be an n alternative to the handmade conventional anastomoses. Moreover they are easy to be implemented

“Today I Have Left My Armor at Home” Revisiting Jean Rhys’s Interwar Novels after the Ethical Turn

    Get PDF
Within the critical interpretation that too often conflates life and fiction, the so-called "Jean Rhys woman" has resisted full assimilation by a feminist literary canon that advocates empowerment and agency. Browsing through Rhys's bibliography, it is interesting to note the considerable number of titles that suggest a commiserating attitude towards both the novelist and her female characters. Rhys's nomads, expatriates and zombielike figures have been analysed from the prism of postcolonial criticism as strongly inspired by the novelist's Caribbean background, their undecidable and precarious nature might be explained as part of what Butler has termed "certain exclusionary conceptions of who is normatively human". Other instances of abject corporealities can be found in Rhys's allusion to mannequins and inanimate bodies that elicited particular fascination in the interwar period, when huge numbers of injured soldiers acquired arms and legs prostheses, thus imposing new ways of thinking the body and its limits

Arquitectura y Educación. Una hermenéutica de los espacios en clave pedagógica

    Get PDF
