International Conference on Education. Bilbao, 18-20 de julio de 2013In the last years, Spanish universities have given great importance to in-service training focusing mainly on the quality of teaching. This increase, which is a clear sign of the effort done by Spanish universities to improve the professional competence of academics, must be accompanied by asp ects such as the evaluation of the given training/courses, the inclusion of different elements to be assessed, i.e. the lecturers, contents, structure of the course, number of participants, degree of satisfaction of the participants with the received training, the impact of the course on the development of teaching competences and the impact of the new skills on the teaching practice, considering, mainly, the teaching of the participants. This paper analyses the needs expressed by academics as well as the offer proposed by the University of Granada to those needs. A survey conducted in 2012/13 of more than 500 academics is used to gather informatio

Estimates of the likelihood of threats are related to intolerance of uncertainty and learning

In the present experiment, we assessed the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and expectancy ratings of threats both in the presence of conditioned stimuli (CS) that signalled the delivery of an aversive unconditioned stimulus (US), and after making an avoidance response. Participants learned the relationship between several pictures serving as CSs and an aversive sound serving as the US, and learned to avoid the US through a procedure including alternating pavlovian and negative reinforcement training phases. Expectancy ratings were measured on every training trial. Our results only showed a significant association between intolerance of uncertainty and expectancy ratings made after avoidance responses. This association was found only when the avoidance response was made in the presence of CSs signalling that the aversive sound was avoidable. The increase in intolerance of uncertainty was related to lower expectancy ratings in good learners, and to higher expectancy ratings in bad learners. These results are tentatively explained by invoking a view of intolerance of uncertainty as an exaggerated reaction to uncertainty aimed at learning to avoid threats.Universidad de Málaga. Ab initio studies of propene epoxidation on oxidized silver surfaces

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaAb initio density functional simulations have been performed to study the adsorption of propene on partially oxidized silver surfaces and its interaction with surface oxygen. Two different adsorption conformations for propene are studied, with the molecule either intact or forming an Ag–C3H6–O oxymetallacycle (OMC) intermediate. Then, pathways for propene oxide, acrolein and propanone formation have been studied in detail, providing insight into the selectivity of the surfaces. We find that formation of acrolein must necessarily take place from OMC intermediates, requiring at least two neighbouring reactive surface oxygen anions. This suggests a strong relationship between the concentration of surface oxygen and the selectivity of these surfaces.

Sustainability improvement in complex systems composed of products and services

Purpose: A wide number of research efforts have been carried out over the last decades to assess and improve system sustainability. Different methods and tools are increasingly implemented in product systems; nevertheless its application to services and other systems, in which products and services are combined, is rather limited. In this work, an approach to improve the sustainability of systems composed of products and services (P + S systems) is proposed and implemented in two case studies. Methods: The sustainability improvement of P + S systems is addressed integrating different methods and approaches. The flows between system approach is used to identify links between all systems involved. The life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) method is applied to simultaneously evaluate environmental, economic and social aspects of sustainability with a life cycle perspective. In addition, sustainable design principles are taken into account to propose effective improvement strategies. The systematic development of four phases is required to carry out the integration of these approaches: (i) identification of links between involved systems; (ii) sustainability assessment of the P + S system; (iii) application of sustainability strategies; and (iv) sustainability results comparison. Results and discussion: Two different P + S systems are analysed. First, sustainability improvements in the service provided by a clothing boutique are proposed, taking into account that the store where the service is developed and the clothes acquired by the service provider are product systems involved in the service operation. Next, the sustainability of an itinerary exhibition is investigated. Products required for the exhibition space layout as well as the service used to transport all materials between different locations are taken into account. In each case, sustainability indicators obtained in both initial and alternative systems are compared, and variations detected due to strategies applied are analysed. Conclusions: Sustainability of P + S systems is evaluated using a set of quantitative indicators, the relative incidence of each system is determined and more sustainable alternatives are projected. Thus, this research supposes an advance towards the sustainable design of complex systems composed of products and services, since effects due to the interconnection between systems are studied and criteria to carry out sustainability-oriented decision making are provided. © 2021, The Author(s)

Determination of the glass-forming concentration range in binary alloys from a semiempirical theory: Application to Zr-based alloys

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaA semiempirical theory is presented to calculate free-energy diagrams of glass-forming alloys. The theory is based on the enthalpy of formation of the solid solution expressed as a sum of two contributions: (a) a chemical contribution due to electronic redistribution in forming the alloy, and (b) an elastic contribution arising from the difference in size between solute and solvent atoms. The enthalpy of formation of the amorphous phase has only the chemical contribution. The theory is used to successfully describe the glass-forming concentration range of some Zr-based alloys, which have been experimentally analyzed by several distinct techniques

Natural and anthropogenic alterations of the soil affect body condition of the fossorial amphisbaenian Trogonophis wiegamnni in North Africa

Soil alteration is one of the major threats in arid environments, which can have serious consequences for soil biodiversity. However, the ecology of fossorial animals is poorly understood and their low conspicuousness may lead researchers and managers to overlook potential conservation problems. Amphisbaenians are fossorial reptiles and, because of their secretive habits, there is a chronic almost lack of data on their conservation state. Here, we examined the effects of diverse natural (salinization and seagulls influence) and anthropogenic factors (disturbance of the soil physical structure and lead contamination) that affect physical and chemical properties of the soil on body condition of Trogonophis wiegmanni amphisbaenians from the Chafarinas Islands, in North Africa. Results indicated that soil salinization and human induced mechanical disturbance and compaction of the soil affected negatively to body condition of amphisbaenians. In contrast, the increase in organic matter and heavy metals pollutants in the soil, either because of the seagull or anthropogenic influence, did not seem to affect body condition of amphisbaenians. We suggest potential management techniques to solve these problems and emphasize the need for periodic surveys of subterranean herpetofauna to prevent future conservation problems.Legal authorization and financial support was provided by the Organismo Autónomo de Parques Nacionales with additional financial support from a Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación project (CGL2011-24150/BOS) and from the Regional Government of Andalusia project BIOGEOBIRD (P09-RNM-4987) and FEDER funds.Peer reviewe
