    Opportunity and Choice in Social Networks

    Our societies are heterogeneous in many dimensions such as census, education, religion, ethnic and cultural composition. The links between individuals - e.g. by friendship, marriage or collaboration - are not evenly distributed, but rather tend to be concentrated within the same group. This phenomenon, called imbreeding homophily, has been related to either (social) preference for links with own--type individuals ( choice-based homophily) or to the prevalence of individuals of her same type in the choice set of an individual ( opportunity-based homophily). We propose an indicator to distinguish between these effects for minority groups. This is based on the observation that, in environments with unbiased opportunities, as the relative size of the minority gets small, individuals of the minority rarely meet and have the chance to establish links together. Therefore the effect of choice--based homophily gets weaker and weaker as the size of the minority shrinks. We test this idea across the dimensions of race and education on data on US marriages, and across race on friendships in US schools, and find that: for what concerns education i) opportunity--based homophily is much stronger than choice--based homophily and ii) they are both remarkably stationary in time; concerning race iii) school friendships do not exhibit opportunity-based homophily, while marriages do, iv) choice-based homophily is much stronger for marriages than for friendships and v) these effects vary widely across race.Social Networks, Choice-Based and Opportunity-Based Homophily

    On the High-dimensional Bak-Sneppen model

    We report on extensive numerical simulations on the Bak-Sneppen model in high dimensions. We uncover a very rich behavior as a function of dimensionality. For d>2 the avalanche cluster becomes fractal and for d \ge 4 the process becomes transient. Finally the exponents reach their mean field values for d=d_c=8, which is then the upper critical dimension of the Bak Sneppen model.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figure

    Climate Change: impact on snow loads on structures

    A general procedure to evaluate future trends in snow loads on structures is illustrated aiming to study influences of climate change at European scale, to assess its impact on the design of new structures as well as on the reliability levels of existing ones, also in view of the next revision of the Eurocodes. Analysing high quality registered meteorological data of daily temperatures, rain and snow precipitations in nine Italian weather stations, conditional probability functions of occurrence of snow precipitation, accumulation and melting have been preliminarily determined as functions of daily air temperatures. By means of Monte Carlo simulations and based upon daily output of climate models (daily max. and min. temperatures and water precipitation) yearly maxima of snow loads for various time intervals of 40 years in the period 1980-2100 have been simulated, deriving, via the extreme value theory, the characteristic ground snow loads at the sites. Then, the proposed procedure has been implemented in a more general methodology for snow map updating, in such a way that the influence of gridded data of precipitation, predicted by global climate models, on extreme values of snow loads is duly assessed. Preliminary results demonstrate that the outlined procedure is very promising and allows to estimate the evolution of characteristic ground snow loads and to define updated ground snow load maps for different climate models and scenarios

    Effects of tobin taxes in minority game markets

    We show that the introduction of Tobin taxes in agent-based models of currency markets can lead to a reduction of both speculative trading and the magnitude of exchange rate fluctuations at intermediate tax rates. In this regime revenues obtained from speculators are maximal for the institutions acting as market makers. We here focus on minority game models of markets, which are accessible by exact techniques from statistical mechanics. Results are supported by computer simulations. Our findings suggest that at finite systems sizes the effect is most pronounced in a critical region around the phase transition of the infinite system, but much weaker if the market is operating far from criticality and does not exhibit anomalous fluctuations

    Critical exponents of the anisotropic Bak-Sneppen model

    We analyze the behavior of spatially anisotropic Bak-Sneppen model. We demonstrate that a nontrivial relation between critical exponents tau and mu=d/D, recently derived for the isotropic Bak-Sneppen model, holds for its anisotropic version as well. For one-dimensional anisotropic Bak-Sneppen model we derive a novel exact equation for the distribution of avalanche spatial sizes, and extract the value gamma=2 for one of the critical exponents of the model. Other critical exponents are then determined from previously known exponent relations. Our results are in excellent agreement with Monte Carlo simulations of the model as well as with direct numerical integration of the new equation.Comment: 8 pages, three figures included with psfig, some rewriting, + extra figure and table of exponent
