    Self-monitoring Among Secondary and Post-secondary Students With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Current Summary and Future Directions

    Research presented at the 2020 Georgia Educational Research Association Conference, virtual conference. A preliminary search of the literature has revealed very few studies applicable to self-monitoring behaviours in college-aged individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), a technique that has been studied primarily in the elementary aged population. Learning how to self-monitor, whether it is self-monitoring behaviour or using it to learn to do tasks, is an important skill for one to become a success in college and during adulthood. This skill may allow some students to seek out and successfully complete further education and vocational training. Having individuals with disabilities able to join the workforce and advanced educational opportunities will increase their visibility, increase their opportunities for community involvement, and hopefully reduce stigma against people with disabilities. Unfortunately, there are significant gaps in the literature on self-monitoring for students with IDD who are attending post-secondary institutions. This presentation will provide an update on the current status of research on this topic as well as discuss the future directions

    Re-Engineering the ISS Payload Operations Control Center During Increased Utilization and Critical Onboard Events

    With an increase in utilization and hours of payload operations being executed onboard the International Space Station (ISS), upgrading the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Huntsville Operations Support Center (HOSC) ISS Payload Control Area (PCA) was essential to gaining efficiencies and assurance of current and future payload health and science return. PCA houses the Payload Operations Integration Center (POIC) responsible for the execution of all NASA payloads onboard the ISS. POIC Flight Controllers are responsible for the operation of voice, stowage, command, telemetry, video, power, thermal, and environmental control in support of ISS science experiments. The methodologies and execution of the PCA refurbishment were planned and performed within a four-month period in order to assure uninterrupted operation of ISS payloads and minimal impacts to payload operations teams. To vacate the PCA, three additional HOSC control rooms were reconfigured to handle ISS real-time operations, Backup Control Center (BCC) to Mission Control in Houston, simulations, and testing functions. This involved coordination and cooperation from teams of ISS operations controllers, multiple engineering and design disciplines, management, and construction companies performing an array of activities simultaneously and in sync delivering a final product with no issues that impacted the schedule. For each console operator discipline, studies of Information Technology (IT) tools and equipment layouts, ergonomics, and lines of sight were performed. Infusing some of the latest IT into the project was an essential goal in ensuring future growth and success of the ISS payload science returns. Engineering evaluations led to a state of the art Video Wall implementation and more efficient ethernet cabling distribution providing the latest products and the best solution for the POIC. These engineering innovations led to cost savings for the project. Constraints involved in the management of the project included executing over 450 crew-hours of ISS real-time payload operations including a major onboard communications upgrade, SpaceX un-berth, a Soyuz launch, roll-out of ISS live video and interviews from the POIC, annual BCC certification and hurricane season, and ISS simulations and testing. Continuous ISS payload operations were possible during the PCA facility modifications with the reconfiguration of four control rooms and standup of two temporary control areas. Another major restriction to the project was an ongoing facility upgrade that included a NASA Headquarters mandated replacement of all electrical and mechanical systems and replacement of an external generator. These upgrades required a facility power outage during the PCA upgrades. The project also encompassed console layout designs and ordering, amenities selections and ordering, excessing of old equipment, moves, disposal of old IT equipment, camera installations, facility tour re-schedules, and contract justifications. These were just some of the tasks needed for a successful project. This paper describes the logistics and lessons learned in upgrading a control center capability in the middle of complex real-time operations. Combining the efficiencies of controller interaction and new technology infusion were prime drivers for this upgrade to handle the increased utilization of science research on ISS. The success of this project could not jeopardize the current operations while these facility upgrades occurred

    Applying Participatory Health Research Elements in Rural End-of-Life Research: Reflections on Conducting In-Depth Interviews With Participants on Sensitive Topics

    Gegenstand des Forschungsprojekts "Living Loving Dying" war es, die Versorgung am Lebensende und die Trauerbewältigung für Sterbende und ihre Angehörigen in ländlichen Regionen zu verbessern. Teilnehmende waren Personen, die Sterbende begleitet hatten und in Gebieten mit geringer Einwohner*innenzahl und in relativer geografischer Isolation lebten. Die Datenerhebung zu derart sensitiven Themen mit Menschen, die immer noch von Tod und Trauer betroffen waren, erforderte die Nutzung entsprechen sensitiver Methoden. Wichtig ist auch, dass diese Menschen sicher sein können, dass ihre Stimme gehört wird und dass sie zu positiven Veränderungen für andere beitragen können. Vor diesem Hintergrund haben wir sie gebeten, als Community-Partner*innen an der Studie teilzunehmen, für die wir ein deskriptives qualitatives Design gewählt und partizipative Elemente in die Datenerhebung mittels teilstrukturierter Interviews einbezogen haben. Dabei war die nicht-hierarchische Beziehung zwischen uns Forschenden und den Partner*innen von herausragender Bedeutung gerade angesichts dieser vulnerablen Gruppe. In dem Beitrag reflektieren wird die pragmatischen und ethischen Erwägungen des Methodeneinsatzes für die ländliche Lebensende-Forschung.The "Living Loving Dying" research project aimed to improve end of life and bereavement care for people caring and dying in rural areas. The data were provided by people who had experienced caring for someone until his/her death, while living in an area of low population and geographical isolation. Undertaking data collection on such a sensitive topic, from people still vulnerable from the impacts of death and grief, requires the use of particularly sensitive research methods. It is also important that participants feel their voices are heard and that they are contributing to positive change for others. In view of this we positioned people to participate as community-partners and utilized a descriptive qualitative design with participatory elements in the data collection method of in-depth, semi structured interviewing. The non-hierarchical relationship between researchers and community-partners were key influences for using participatory elements in this research with a vulnerable population. In this article we reflect on the pragmatic and ethical considerations that the application of this method has for rural end-of-life research

    Electricity Governance and the Western Energy Imbalance Market in the United States: The Necessity of Interorganizational Collaboration

    In the Western United States, widespread growth of wind and solar resources is putting pressure on state policy makers, electricity system operators, and utilities to integrate renewable resources into the grid, while maintaining reliability, affordability, and improving efficiency. These resources are creating new challenges because their variability can contribute to transmission constraints and system imbalances. This paper examines a recent initiative to make energy imbalance market services available throughout the Western Interconnection and provides insight into evolving electricity system governance. Drawing on boundary organization and interorganizational collaboration literature, this research explores the processes and practices used to create a new interorganizational collaboration. The research supports theoretical claims that facilitating policy innovation requires discursive formation of a collective identity

    Concussion Management, Education, and Return-to-Play Policies in High Schools: A Survey of Athletic Directors, Athletic Trainers, and Coaches

    Background: Concussions represent 8.9% to 13.2% of all high school athletic injuries. How these injuries are managed is currently unknown. Hypothesis: There are differences in concussion management and awareness between boys football, boys ice hockey, and boys and girls soccer. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiologic study. Methods: High school athletic directors were contacted via email and asked to complete an online survey with four separate sections for athletic directors, head coaches, team physicians, or certified athletic trainers. Results: According to coaches, concussion awareness education was provided for football (97%), hockey (65%), and boys and girls soccer (57% and 47%, respectively) (P \u3c 0.01). Use of sideline screening tools was significantly greater for football (P = 0.03). All participants agreed that a player who has suffered a concussion cannot return to play the same day. Conclusion: There is a difference in concussion management and awareness between the four sports. Concussion education is well promoted in football but should be expanded in soccer and hockey. Players are not allowed to return to play the same day, and the majority are referred to a physician. Clinical Relevance: Study results highlight the differences in concussion education between sports. Healthcare providers should address these gaps

    Monitoring tropical peat related settlement using ISBAS InSAR, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)

    Rapid population growth in South-East Asia has placed immense pressure upon lowland regions both to supply food and employment and space for residential, commercial and infrastructure development. This pressure has led to sites on tropical peatland previously considered unsuitable for development to be revisited. One such site, the KLIA2 terminal and runway, Kuala Lumpur International Airport which opened in May 2014 at a cost of 3.6 billion MYR has been beset by well documented subsidence problems. Coverage of the tropics by the Sentinel-1 satellite constellation presents an opportunity to monitor the ongoing subsidence at KLIA 2, identify potential knowledge gaps and help inform more sustainable infrastructure development in tropical peatland regions. Our results show that the ISBAS InSAR method produces reproducible ground deformation maps which can clearly identify the patterns of deformation across both urban infrastructure and adjacent rural plantations and tropical peat swamp. This is particularly well defined around the terminal building at KLIA-2 where different ground preparation and foundation design have resulted in stable terminal buildings and subsidence of surrounding pavement. Deformation is greatest in the runway area where alternate bands of uplift and subsidence presumably accompany the greatest loads associated with landing aircraft. In contrast, areas where peat replacement was the primary form of ground preparation, ground motion is stable, however this comes at high economic and environmental cost

    A Catalog of Spectroscopically Confirmed White Dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4

    We present a catalog of 9316 spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4. We have selected the stars through photometric cuts and spectroscopic modeling, backed up by a set of visual inspections. Roughly 6000 of the stars are new discoveries, roughly doubling the number of spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs. We analyze the stars by performing temperature and surface gravity fits to grids of pure hydrogen and helium atmospheres. Among the rare outliers are a set of presumed helium-core DA white dwarfs with estimated masses below 0.3 Msun, including two candidates that may be the lowest masses yet found.
