Knowledge Boosting Curriculum for New Wind Industry Professionals Final Technical Report
DNV Renewables (USA) Inc. (DNV KEMA) received a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to develop the curriculum for a series of short courses intended to address Topic Area 5 â Workforce Development, one of the focus areas to achieve the goals outlined in 20% Wind by 2030: Increasing Wind EnergyâÂÂs Contribution to Electricity Supply. The aim of the curriculum development project was to provide material for instructors to use in a training program to help professionals transition into careers in wind energy. Under this grant DNV KEMA established a âÂÂknowledge boostingâ program for the wind energy industry with the following objectives: 1. Develop technical training curricula and teaching materials for six key topic areas that can be implemented in a flexible format by a knowledgeable instructor. The topic areas form a foundation that can be leveraged for subsequent, more detailed learning modules (not developed in this program). 2. Develop an implementation guidance document to accompany the curricula outlining key learning objectives, implementation methods, and guidance for utilizing the curricula. This curriculum is intended to provide experienced trainers course material that can be used to provide course participants with a basic background in wind energy and wind project development. The curriculum addresses all aspects of developing a wind project, that when implemented can be put to use immediately, making the participant an asset to U.S. wind industry employers. The curriculum is comprised of six short modules, together equivalent in level of content to a one-semester college-level course. The student who completes all six modules should be able to understand on a basic level what is required to develop a wind project, speak with a reasonable level of confidence about such topics as wind resource assessment, energy assessment, turbine technology and project economics, and contribute to the analysis and review of project information. The content of the curriculum is based on DNV KEMAâÂÂs extensive experience in consulting and falls under six general topics: 1. Introduction to wind energy 2. Wind resource and energy assessment 3. Wind turbine systems and components 4. Wind turbine installation, integration, and operation 5. Feasibility studies 6. Project economics Each general topic (module) covers 10-15 sub-topics. Representatives from industry provided input on the design and content of the modules as they were developed. DNV KEMA developed guidance documents to accompany the training curricula and materials in order to facilitate usage of the curricula in a manner consistent with industries requirements. Internal and external pilot trainings using selections of the curriculum provided valuable feedback that was then used to modify and improve the material and make it more relevant to participants. The pilot trainings varied in their content and intensity, and each served as an opportunity for the trainers to better understand which techniques proved to be the most successful for accelerated learning. In addition, the varied length and content of the trainings, which were adjusted to suit the focus and budget for each particular situation, highlight the flexibility of the format. The material developed under this program focused primarily on onshore wind project development. The course material could be extended in the future to address the unique aspects of offshore project development

Parallel processes:Getting it write?
This paper offers a critical reflection on the processes surrounding the writing of a book aimed at foster carers and residential workers. By utilising the concept of parallel process as well as the four modes of reflection identified by Ruch (2000), we explore the ways in which the wider context of both direct works with children and reflective practice have been impacted by the tensions between relationally based, child-centred practice and wider managerialist imperatives. The paper draws parallels between these practice tensions and those currently in play within the academy. By employing a dialogical and reflective analysis of the process and interactions surrounding the writing of a practitioner-targeted book, the paper demonstrates the ways in which critical and process reflection post-event took place, considering the heretofore unexplored parallel processes between writing for practice, and practice. In so doing, it identifies the ways in which the authors mirrored practitioners in relation to the management of anxiety, a sense of constrained autonomy and confidence, and an avoidance of recognising and challenging structural and political context. Implications for the creation of practice literature and for the academy are considered.Output Status: Forthcoming/Available Onlin

Motor phenotype of LRRK2 G2019S carriers in early-onset Parkinson disease
Objective: To determine the motor phenotype of LRRK2 G2019S mutation carriers. LRRK2 mutation carriers were previously reported to manifest the tremor dominant motor phenotype, which has been associated with slower motor progression and less cognitive impairment compared with the postural instability and gait difficulty (PIGD) phenotype. Design: Cross-sectional observational study. Setting: Thirteen movement disorders centers. Participants: Nine hundred twenty-five early-onset Parkinson disease cases defined as age at onset younger than 51 years. Main Outcome Measures: LRRK2 mutation status and Parkinson disease motor phenotype: tremor dominant or PIGD. Demographic information, family history of Parkinson disease, and the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale score were collected on all participants. DNA samples were genotyped for LRRK2 mutations (G2019S, I2020T, R1441C, and Y1699C). Logistic regression was used to examine associations of G2019S mutation status with motor phenotype adjusting for disease duration, Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, levodopa dose, and family history of Parkinson disease. Results: Thirty-four cases (3.7%) (14 previously reported) were G2019S carriers. No other mutations were found. Carriers were more likely to be Ashkenazi Jewish (55.9% vs 11.9%; P < .001) but did not significantly differ in any other demographic or disease characteristics. Carriers had a lower tremor score (P = .03) and were more likely to have a PIGD phenotype (92.3% vs 58.9%; P = .003). The association of the G2019S mutation with PIGD phenotype remained after controlling for disease duration and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry (odds ratio, 17.7; P < .001). Conclusion: Early-onset Parkinson disease G2019S LRRK2 carriers are more likely to manifest the PIGD phenotype, which may have implications for disease course
Exploring the impact of animal involvement in the learning experiences of learners mainly with autism in the English West Midlands region: a qualitative study
Learners with autism are affected by different challenges during learning. There is a growing focus on education to facilitate learners to become more self-resilient by involving animals in learning spaces. This qualitative study explored the impact of animal involvement on the learning experiences of learners with autism. Twenty diaries, 32 questionnaires, and 40 guided narratives and pictorial voices were used to collect data. The study found that learners demonstrated improved communication, imagination, empathy, motivation, calculation skills, responsibility, and well-being while interacting with animals. The study concluded that involving animals in the learning spaces has significant positive impact on learners

All-d-Enantiomer of β-Amyloid Peptide Forms Ion Channels in Lipid Bilayers
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common type
of senile
dementia in aging populations. Amyloid β (Aβ)-mediated
dysregulation of ionic homeostasis is the prevailing underlying mechanism
leading to synaptic degeneration and neuronal death. Aβ-dependent
ionic dysregulation most likely occurs either directly via unregulated
ionic transport through the membrane or indirectly via Aβ binding
to cell membrane receptors and subsequent opening of existing ion
channels or transporters. Receptor binding is expected to involve
a high degree of stereospecificity. Here, we investigated whether
an Aβ peptide enantiomer, whose entire sequence consists of d-amino acids, can form ion-conducting channels; these channels
can directly mediate Aβ effects even in the absence of receptor–peptide
interactions. Using complementary approaches of planar lipid bilayer
(PLB) electrophysiological recordings and molecular dynamics (MD)
simulations, we show that the d-Aβ isomer exhibits
ion conductance behavior in the bilayer indistinguishable from that
described earlier for the l-Aβ isomer. The d isomer forms channel-like pores with heterogeneous ionic conductance
similar to the l-Aβ isomer channels, and the d-isomer channel conductance is blocked by Zn2+, a known
blocker of l-Aβ isomer channels. MD simulations further
verify formation of β-barrel-like Aβ channels with d- and l-isomers, illustrating that both d- and l-Aβ barrels can conduct cations. The calculated
values of the single-channel conductance are approximately in the
range of the experimental values. These findings are in agreement
with amyloids forming Ca2+ leaking, unregulated channels
in AD, and suggest that Aβ toxicity is mediated through a receptor-independent,
nonstereoselective mechanism
Translating Marine Animal Tracking Data into Conservation Policy and Management
There have been efforts around the globe to track individuals of many marine species and assess their movements and distribution with the putative goal of supporting their conservation and management. Determining whether, and how, tracking data have been successfully applied to address real-world conservation issues is however difficult. Here, we compile a broad range of case studies from diverse marine taxa to show how tracking data have helped inform conservation policy and management, including reductions in fisheries bycatch and vessel strikes, and the design and administration of marine protected areas and important habitats. Using these examples, we highlight pathways through which the past and future investment in collecting animal tracking data might be better used to achieve tangible conservation benefits
