In this paper we study the Pettis integral of fuzzy mappings in arbitrary Banach spaces. We present some properties of the Pettis integral of fuzzy mappings and we give conditions under which a scalarly integrable fuzzy mapping is Pettis integrable

Design of an active helicopter control experiment at the Princeton Rotorcraft Dynamics Laboratory

    Get PDF
In an effort to develop an active control technique for reducing helicopter vibrations stemming from the main rotor system, a helicopter model was designed and tested at the Princeton Rotorcraft Dynamics Laboratory (PRDL). A description of this facility, including its latest data acquisition upgrade, are given. The design procedures for the test model and its Froude scaled rotor system are also discussed. The approach for performing active control is based on the idea that rotor states can be identified by instrumenting the rotor blades. Using this knowledge, Individual Blade Control (IBC) or Higher Harmonic Control (HHC) pitch input commands may be used to impact on rotor dynamics in such a way as to reduce rotor vibrations. Discussed here is an instrumentation configuration utilizing miniature accelerometers to measure and estimate first and second out-of-plane bending mode positions and velocities. To verify this technique, the model was tested, and resulting data were used to estimate rotor states as well as flap and bending coefficients, procedures for which are discussed. Overall results show that a cost- and time-effective method for building a useful test model for future active control experiments was developed. With some fine-tuning or slight adjustments in sensor configuration, prospects for obtaining good state estimates look promising

Convergence Theorems for Varying Measures Under Convexity Conditions and Applications

    Get PDF
In this paper, convergence theorems involving convex inequalities of Copson’s type (less restrictive than monotonicity assumptions) are given for varying measures, when imposing convexity conditions on the integrable functions or on the measures. Consequently, a continuous dependence result for a wide class of differential equations with many interesting applications, namely measure differential equations (including Stieltjes differential equations, generalized differential problems, impulsive differential equations with finitely or countably many impulses and also dynamic equations on time scales) is provided

Defense mechanisms: From the individual to the collective level

Abstract: In this article we shall deal with the construction and defense of subjective identity as a topic at the intersection of psychology and anthropology. In this perspective, defense mechanisms are seen as falling along a spectrum that stretches from the individual to the collective level. The individual mind is the sphere of the intrapsychic defenses and the interpersonal maneuvers to which each of us appeals, in the relationship with other people and with one’s own environment, to defend one’s own self-describability and, indissolubly, the solidity of one’s own self-conscious being. At a social and collective level, on the other hand, the individual self-protective structures are supported by cultural interventions that organize and intersubjectively “domesticate” our subjectivity and our feeling of being-there.

Stieltjes Differential Inclusions with Periodic Boundary Conditions without Upper Semicontinuity

    Get PDF
We are studying first order differential inclusions with periodic boundary conditions where the Stieltjes derivative with respect to a left-continuous non-decreasing function replaces the classical derivative. The involved set-valued mapping is not assumed to have compact and convex values, nor to be upper semicontinuous concerning the second argument everywhere, as in other related works. A condition involving the contingent derivative relative to the non-decreasing function (recently introduced and applied to initial value problems by R.L. Pouso, I.M. Marquez Albes, and J. Rodriguez-Lopez) is imposed on the set where the upper semicontinuity and the assumption to have compact convex values fail. Based on previously obtained results for periodic problems in the single-valued cases, the existence of solutions is proven. It is also pointed out that the solution set is compact in the uniform convergence topology. In particular, the existence results are obtained for periodic impulsive differential inclusions (with multivalued impulsive maps and finite or possibly countable impulsive moments) without upper semicontinuity assumptions on the right-hand side, and also the existence of solutions is derived for dynamic inclusions on time scales with periodic boundary conditions

Bacon against Descartes. Emotions, Rationality, Defenses

    Get PDF
Far from being a natural kind, ‘emotion’ turns out to be a conventional label that captures quite diverse phenomena; and such phenomena can no longer be relegated, as the ideology of passions suggested, to a ‘lower’ and ‘primitive’ psychic sphere, which threatens the nobility of ‘the thinking thing’. They belong to the unlevelled universe to which all psychological events belong. In general, cognitive sciences have brought to light the heterogeneity not only of emotions, but also of what is traditionally meant by ‘reason’. The experimental investigation of rationality and reasoning by the cognitive sciences has shown that there is no unitary cognitive sphere. There is instead a toolbox of imperfect analytic and operative tools that is heterogeneous and scattered, and consequently lacks the hierarchical structure that, according to the Cartesian model, culminated in self-conscious rationality. Thus, a paradigm shift is underway. Some research areas in cognitive sciences adopt a Baconian logic, in which errors and self-deceptions are seen as intrinsic to the ordinary cognitive-affective processes. Therefore, whereas in Freud the naive subject normally deceives herself because she is unable to accept the presence, deep down, of ‘inadmissible’ sexual and aggressive drives, in a dynamic psychology informed by the renewal of the traditional psychological categories outlined above, intrinsically defensive cognitive-affective mechanisms become the principles that rule over the construction of everyday reality
