Fixed points and limit cycles in the population dynamics of lysogenic viruses and their hosts
Starting with stochastic rate equations for the fundamental interactions
between microbes and their viruses, we derive a mean field theory for the
population dynamics of microbe-virus systems, including the effects of
lysogeny. In the absence of lysogeny, our model is a generalization of that
proposed phenomenologically by Weitz and Dushoff. In the presence of lysogeny,
we analyze the possible states of the system, identifying a novel limit cycle,
which we interpret physically. To test the robustness of our mean field
calculations to demographic fluctuations, we have compared our results with
stochastic simulations using the Gillespie algorithm. Finally, we estimate the
range of parameters that delineate the various steady states of our model.Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, 4 table
Direct calculation of the hard-sphere crystal/melt interfacial free energy
We present a direct calculation by molecular-dynamics computer simulation of
the crystal/melt interfacial free energy, , for a system of hard
spheres of diameter . The calculation is performed by thermodynamic
integration along a reversible path defined by cleaving, using specially
constructed movable hard-sphere walls, separate bulk crystal and fluid systems,
which are then merged to form an interface. We find the interfacial free energy
to be slightly anisotropic with = 0.62, 0.64 and
0.58 for the (100), (110) and (111) fcc crystal/fluid
interfaces, respectively. These values are consistent with earlier density
functional calculations and recent experiments measuring the crystal nucleation
rates from colloidal fluids of polystyrene spheres that have been interpreted
[Marr and Gast, Langmuir {\bf 10}, 1348 (1994)] to give an estimate of
for the hard-sphere system of , slightly lower

Big data and diabetes: the applications of big data for diabetes care now and in the future
Aims: Review the current applications of Big Data in diabetes care and consider the future potential.
Methods: Scoping study of the academic literature on Big Data and diabetes care.
Results: Healthcare data are being produced at ever-increasing rates, and this information has the potential to transform the provision of diabetes care. Big Data is beginning to have an impact on diabetes care through data research. The use of Big Data for routine clinical care is still a future application.
Conclusions: Vast amounts of healthcare data are already being produced, and the key is harnessing these to produce actionable insights. Considerable development work is required to achieve these goals
Separation and identification of dominant mechanisms in double photoionization
Double photoionization by a single photon is often discussed in terms of two
contributing mechanisms, {\it knock-out} (two-step-one) and {\it shake-off}
with the latter being a pure quantum effect. It is shown that a quasi-classical
description of knock-out and a simple quantum calculation of shake-off provides
a clear separation of the mechanisms and facilitates their calculation
considerably. The relevance of each mechanism at different photon energies is
quantified for helium. Photoionization ratios, integral and singly differential
cross sections obtained by us are in excellent agreement with benchmark
experimental data and recent theoretical results.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) Support of User Spacecraft without TDRSS Transponders
NASA GSFC VNS TSG personnel have proposed the use of TDRSS to obtain telemetry and/or S-band one-way return Doppler tracking data for spacecraft which do not have TDRSS-compatible transponders and therefore were never considered candidates for TDRSS support. For spacecraft with less stable local oscillators (LO), one-way return Doppler tracking data is typically of poor quality. It has been demonstrated using UARS, WIND, and NOAA-J tracking data that the simultaneous use of two TDRSS spacecraft can yield differenced one-way return Doppler data of high quality which is usable for orbit determination by differencing away the effects of oscillator instability
First contemporary case of human infection with Cryptococcus gattii in Puget Sound: Evidence for spread of the Vancouver Island outbreak
We report a case of cryptococcosis due to C. gattii which appears to have been acquired in the Puget Sound region, Washington State. Genotyping confirmed identity to the predominant Vancouver Island genotype. This is the first documented case of human disease by the major Vancouver Island emergence strain acquired within the United States
