    Get PDF

Dental manifestations in bariatric patients: review of literature

    Get PDF
The rate of bariatric surgery has significantly risen in the past decade as an increasing prevalence of extreme obesity can be observed. Although bariatric surgery is an effective therapeutic modality for extreme obesity, it is associated with risk factors affecting also oral health. Based on an overview of the current literature, this paper presents a summary of dental manifestations in bariatric patients. Bariatric surgeries are associated with an increased risk for gastro-esophageal reflux which in turn might account for the higher amount of carious and erosive lesions observed in bariatric patients. As a result, also dentin hypersensitivity might be observed more frequently. The current data indicate that recommended postsurgical meal patterns and gastric reflux might increase the risk for dental lesions, particularly in the presence of other risk factors, such as consumption of sweet-tasting foods and acidic beverages. Further research is needed to evaluate the correlation of bariatric surgery and the development of dental diseases

oai:ojs2.www.telosjournals.com.br:article/1We must begin this article with the justification of its title: the term télos comes from Greek and has, among several meanings, that of being the point towards which a reality moves, the purpose or objective. The reality on which this study is focused is the Socio-Educational System, with a case study of the Centro Socioeducativo de Juiz de Fora (CSEJF) and the semiliberty units. However, before delving into the specific issue of the aforementioned county, it is worthwhile to look at the implementation and reality of social-education in the state of Minas Gerais and, in particular, in the city that is the object of this study.

A NEW METHODOLOGY FOR DIAGNOSIS OF FANCONI ANEMIA BASED ON BIOLOGICAL DOSIMETRY

    Get PDF
Fanconi Anemia (FA) is a syndrome associated with chromosomal fragility. Current laboratory tests to diagnose this disease are based on the scoring of chromosomal aberrations induced in peripheral blood lymphocytes by clastogenic chemical agents, mainly: diepoxybutane (DEB) or mitomycin C (MMC). This study evaluated an alternative test for the diagnosis of FA, in which ionizing radiation replaces DEB/MMC. Two groups were studied: normal and DEB-sensitive individuals. From each individual, samples of peripheral blood were irradiated using an electron linear accelerator. Following lymphocyte cultures, and slide preparation, metaphases were scored based on the same methodology for biological dosimetry, according to recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Our results emphasized a pattern of distribution of dicentrics, fragments, as well as abnormal chromosomal arrangements. The methodology of analysis here proposed permitted to distinguish normal from DEB-sensitive subjects

An alternative storage method for characterization of the intestinal microbiota through next generation sequencing

Gut microbiota has been the subject of various molecular studies mainly due to its importance and wide-ranging relationships with human hosts. However, the storage of fecal samples prior to DNA extraction is critical when characterizing the composition of intestinal microbiota. Therefore, we aimed to understand the effects of different fecal storage methods to characterize intestinal microbiota using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) as well as to establish an alternative conservation method of bacterial genetic material in these samples using guanidine. Stool samples from 10 healthy volunteers were collected. Each sample was divided into five aliquots: one aliquot was extracted immediately after collection (fresh) and two aliquots were subjected to freezing at -20 °C or -80 °C and extracted after 48 h. The other two aliquots were stored in guanidine at room temperature or 4 °C and extracted after 48 h. The V4 hypervariable regions of the bacterial and archeal 16S rRNA gene were amplified by PCR and sequenced using an Ion Torrent PGM platform for NGS. The data were analyzed using QIIME software. Statistical significance was determined using a nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test. A total of 11,494,688 reads with acceptable quality were obtained. Unweighted principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) revealed that the samples were clustered based on the host rather than by the storage group. At the phylum and genus levels, we observed statistically significant differences between two genera, Proteobacteria (p=0.013) and Suterella (p=0.004), comparing frozen samples with guanidine-stored samples. Our data suggest that the use of guanidine can preserve bacterial genetic materials as well as freezing, providing additional convenience
