    A remote demonstrator for dynamic FPGA reconfiguration

    This paper presents a demonstrator for partial reconfiguration of FPGAs applied to image processing tasks. The main goal of the project is to develop an environment whichallows users to assess some of the advantages of using dynamic reconfiguration. The demonstration platform is built around a Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA, which is used to implement a chain of four reconfigurable filters for processing images. Using a graphical interface, the user can choose which filter goes into which reconfigurable slot, submit images for processing and visualize the outcome of the whole process

    Sealing efficacy of system B versus Thermafil and Guttacore obturation techniques evidenced by scintigraphic analysis

    This study compared root canal sealing ability, filled by Continuous Wave compaction and two carrier-based obturation systems, using the nuclear medicine approach. Fifty-five single-rooted extracted teeth were selected. The crowns were sectioned and each tooth was instrumented using rotary Protaper® Universal system. The roots were divided into 3 experimental groups and two control groups. Forty-five root canals were filled, using Continuous Wave, GuttaCore or Thermafil system and TopSeal sealer. Ten teeth were used as control. On the 7th days the apices were submersed in a solution of sodium pertechnetate 99mTc for 3 hours and the radioactivity was counted. Although apical leakage in the Continuous Wave group was lower compared with GuttaCore and Thermafil groups, there was no statistical difference (p>0.05). System B, GuttaCore and Thermafil techniques showed a similar sealing effect

    The relative age effect among elite youth competitive swimmers

    The aim of this study was to analyse the relative age effect (RAE) in competitive swimming. The best 50 Portuguese swimmers (12- to 18-year-olds) for the main individual swimming pool events of both genders were considered. Analysis was conducted on 7813 swimming event participants, taking account of respective swimmer birth dates and the Fédération Internationale de Natation points gained. Differences in the distribution of birth dates by quarter year were determined using the Chi-square. A one-way analysis of variance ANOVA was used to test for differences measured in points between individuals by quarterly birth year intervals. A two-way analysis of variance ANOVA was also conducted to test the interaction between gender and seasonal birth date with regard to performance. The results show an inequitable distribution (p<0.01) of birth dates by quarter for almost all age groups and both genders. However, the distribution of birth dates by quarter for each considered swim event shows that RAE seems to exist only for 12-year-old females and 12- to 15-year-old males. Analysing mean swimming performance, post-hoc results (p<0.01) show no consistency in RAE. Higher performance occurs among older swimmers only in 100 m butterfly (female 1998, 1st≠2nd quarter, p=0.003). The results also show no interaction between gender and seasonal birth date (p<0.01). Findings of this study show that a higher number of swimmers, particular males, are born in the first two quarters of the year, although there is mostly no effect of seasonal birth date on performance differences within the top 50 swimmers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Maxillary mesenchymal chondrosarcoma leading to a diagnosis of Li-Fraumeni syndrome

    Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MCS) is a rare histological variant of chondrosarcoma, with aggressive behaviour. Due to the unique nature of this disease, management strategies are not well established. Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is a rare cancer predisposition syndrome with a wide tumour spectrum, associated with TP53 germline mutations. We report a case of MCS of the maxilla, treated with surgical excision and adjuvant chemotherapy, in a patient with a past medical history of choroid plexus papilloma and a family history of early age first-degree cervical uterine cancer, that led to the clinical suspicion of a cancer predisposition syndrome and the subsequent diagnosis of LFS. This is the first MCS described in a LFS case. It demonstrates that adjuvant chemotherapy should be considered, in conjunction with surgical excision, in MCS and that cancer predisposition syndromes should be suspected in patients with multiple neoplasms and a strong family history of cancer.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    ResumoA trombose é uma das principais causas de morte e o crescente conhecimento das alterações fisiopatológicas inerentes permitiu o desenvolvimento de terapêuticas eficazes (antiagregante, anticoagulante e fibrinolítico) para a prevenção e tratamentos da doença tromboembólica.Contudo, uma compreensão melhor do processo subjacente é fundamental para o desenvolvimento de novos agentes terapêuticos mais seguros e eficazes.O objetivo da presente revisão é sumarizar os tratamentos atuais disponíveis, e destacar os novos agentes e o seu papel comprovado ou eventual na cirurgia vascular.AbstractThrombosis is one of the major causes of death worldwide.     Estudio de la folksonomía que es un proceso lingüístico resultante del etiquetado colaborativo en el entorno web, especialmente en las redes sociales, con predominio en el uso del vocabulario libre constituido por el lenguaje natural creado por los usuarios. Así, se propone como objetivo analizar la representación y recuperación de información por folksonomía, a través de los Hashtags #sostenibilidad y #sostenibilidadambiental insertados en las redes sociales de Instagram y YouTube. Para ello, se realizó un estudio bibliográfico, exploratorio, descriptivo y cualitativo, con el fin de comprender la folksonomía con la observación de los Hashtags en las redes sociales. Los resultados mostraron que la folksonomía como herramienta de representación y recuperación de información es más coherente en YouTube y estable en Instagram. Por lo tanto, la folksonomía es una herramienta útil y dinámica en las redes sociales, siendo utilizada más conscientemente por el usuario con el fin de representar y recuperar la información.This a study on folksonomy, a linguistic process resulting from collaborative online tagging, especially social media, in the use of a free vocabulary predominates, constituting a natural language created by its users. Thus, we aim to analyze information representation and retrieval by folksonomy and the hashtags #sustainability and #sustainabilityenvironmental on Instagram and YouTube. For this, an exploratory bibliographic survey was carried out on Instagram and YouTube, descriptively and qualitatively researched by analyzing 20 publications with #sustainability and #sustainabilityenvironmental each. Results showed that folksonomy is more consistent on YouTube but more stable on Instagram. Thus, folksonomy is a useful and dynamic tool in social media, whose users more consciously use it to represent and retrieve information.Estudo da folksonomia, que é um processo linguístico resultante da etiquetagem colaborativa no ambiente da web, principalmente das redes sociais, com predominância no emprego de vocabulário livre, constituído de linguagem natural criada por usuários. Dessa forma, propõe-se como objetivo analisar a representação e a recuperação da informação pela folksonomia, por meio das hashtags #sustentabilidade e #sustentabilidadeambiental, inseridas nas redes sociais do Instagram e do YouTube. Para isso, foi realizado levantamento bibliográfico, o qual ocorreu em bases de dados, constituindo pesquisa exploratória, no Instagram e no YouTube, descritiva, por meio da observação de 20 publicações, tanto da #sustentabilidade quanto com #sustentabilidadeambiental, e de abordagem qualitativa. Os resultados mostraram que a folksonomia é mais coerente no YouTube e estável no Instagram. Portanto, a folksonomia é uma ferramenta útil e dinâmica, nas redes sociais, sendo utilizada de modo mais consciente por parte do usuário, para fins de representação e recuperação da informação

    Online Monitoring of Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPV)

    Composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV) have been increasingly pointed to as the most effective solution for high pressure storage of liquid and gaseous fluids. Reasonably high stiffness-to-weight ratios make them suitable for both static and mobile applications. However, higher operating pressures are sought continuously, to get higher energy densities in such storage systems, and safety aspects become critical. Thus, reliable design and test procedures are required to reduce the risks of undesired and unpredicted failures. An in-service health monitoring system may contribute to a better product development, design and optimization, as well as to minimize the risks and improve the public acceptance. Within the scope of developing different COPV models for a wide range of operating pressures and applications, optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors were embedded in the liner-composite and composite-composite interfaces during their manufacturing processes. The idea is to allow the online strain monitoring during preliminary testing and service-life. The ability of these measuring systems to effectively assess the strain fields has been investigated. Simultaneously, a finite element analysis (FEA) was made using the ABAQUS® platform. In this numerical analysis, accurate and realistic simulation of the different materials, geometry and loading conditions was approached. Particularly, the anisotropic nature of the wound laminate and the varying orientation of the fibers were attained. However, the cohesive zones were not attributed independent properties. Comparison between experimental and numerical data was addressed. In general, although the experimental-numerical data agreement was not as good as desired, a preliminary insight to both the structural health monitoring (SHM) system and the numerical modeling approaches was actually achieved. Full characterization and validation shall be further addressed in the continuation of the present work

    Marine Operations with the SWORDFISH Autonomous Surface Vehicle

The work focuses the sensors, actuators, communications and C4I of an unmanned vehicle for marine operations. SWORDFISH is an autonomous surface vehicle used as the central communications link between air, undersea, and terrestrial robotic vehicles of a network centric operation. It is used as a test bed platform for deployment and testing of advanced control and operational concepts for multi-vehicles systems. This new unmanned marine vehicle was done in the context of the PISCIS project. The PISCIS project concerns the development, test and evaluation of new vehicles and new concepts of operation for networked vehicle systems in oceanographic data collection. The PISCIS system includes two autonomous underwater vehicles, the Swordfish ASV, an acoustic navigation system, acoustic and radio communications and a distributed command and control system

    O controle judicial imediato de apreensões de adolescentes e jovens no Brasil

    The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of judicial control of the apprehension of adolescents and young people in the context of the practice of infractions in Brazil as an instrument to protect this population against illegalities and arbitrariness, but above all to protect them against aggression, torture, mistreatment and inhuman or degrading treatments. For that, it was important to carry out a documentary research in relation to international human rights law and about the legislation of Latin American countries. Equipments that enhance this judicial control currently in the country have also been analysed. In addition, it was necessary to investigate the model of judicial control of the apprehension of adults with a view to prohibiting more severe treatment of adolescents and young people. Thus, it came to the conclusion that the model for controlling the arrests of adolescents and young people in Brazil is dissociated from international regulations and also from the legislation of the countries in the region, ensuring protection that is lower than that afforded to the adult population.O objetivo principal desse trabalho é investigar a efetividade do controle judicial de apreensão de adolescentes e jovens no contexto da prática de atos infracionais no Brasil como instrumento para proteção dessa população contra ilegalidades e arbitrariedades, mas sobretudo em face de agressões, torturas, maus tratos e tratamentos desumanos ou degradantes. Para tanto foi importante efetuar uma pesquisa documental em relação à normativa internacional dos direitos humanos e à legislação de países da América Latina. Equipamentos que potencializam esse controle judicial atualmente no país também foram objeto de análises. Além disso, foi necessário investigar o modelo de controle judicial de apreensão de adultos tendo em vista a proibição de tratamento mais gravoso a adolescentes e jovens. Assim, chegou-se à conclusão de que o modelo de controle de apreensões de adolescentes e jovens no Brasil se encontra dissociado da normativa internacional e também da legislação dos países da região, assegurando proteção inferior àquela conferida à população adulta
