Ich schreibe diese Entgegnung in meiner Rolle 1. als loyaler und bewundernder Leser, ja Fan der PROKLA seit nun fast 20 Jahren; 2. als Autor des Heftes, dem das Editorial als Einleitung diente; 3. als amerikanischer Sozialwissenschaftler mitteleuropäisch jüdischer Abstammung mit jahrelangen linken Sympathien und Engagement sowohl in den USA als auch in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Das PROKLA-Editorial ist, trotz gegenteiliger Behauptung auf Seite 7, ein eindeutiger und expliziter Versuch, das bereits in großem Maße vorhandene ?>Feindbild USA« in der Bundesrepublik als Bestandteil linker Politik noch zu erweitern und zu verfestigen..

Markovits analysiert die strukturellen Ursachen der Niederlage der Demokratischen Partei bei den Präsidentschaftswahlen vom November 1988, die zu erwartenden Konturen der »Bushjahre« und die gesellschaftlichen Kräfteverhältnisse in den USA am Ende der 80er Jahre. Ein eindeutiger Rechtsruck ist trotz oder infolge der Reagan-Herrschaft nicht auszumachen. There can be no doubt that the Bush Administration's policies have massively contributed to a hitherto unprecedented deterioration in European-American relations. However, European antipathies towards many things American date back at least to July 5, 1776, if not before. Following a conceptual discussion of anti-Americanism, the paper then turns to an account of these historical dislikes and anchors them particularly among Europe's elites. A discussion of anti-Semitism in relation to anti- Americanism follows in the subsequent section. A summary of an analysis of newspaper articles collected in the decade of the 1990s highlights the widespread nature of anti-American sentiments in Britain, France, Germany, Italy. Lastly, anti-Americanism's functionality as a useful ingredient in Europe's burgeoning state building process concludes the paper

Why is there no soccer in the United States ? The other American " exceptionalism ", Andrei S. Markovits. Soccer was rejected in the United States because of the development of sports consi- dered more in accordance with the national culture of the New World. At both Harvard and Yale in the 19th century, American football was imposed from above, out of an elitist reflex towards British imported games. The more popular baseball prevented the social extension of soccer to the population at large. Like the weakness of socialism in that " bourgeois " society, that of soccer is the second sign of a certain American " exceptionalism " pointed out at the beginning of the 20th century by Werner Sombart.MARKOVITS.
