Within this doctoral thesis a series of N-[(1,3-diphenylpyrazol-4-yl)methyl] α-amino acids and N-[(3-ferrocenyl-1-phenylpyrazol-4-yl)methyl] α-amino acids including both phenylalanine enantiomer derivatives were synthesized. NMR studies of the organometalic compounds revealed that additional splitting of the ortho and meta ferrocene signals as well as their multiplicities depend on nature of α-amino acid side chain and cannot be attributed to the chirality of pyrazole-linked α-amino acid alone. The effect of magnetic nonequivalence of both ortho protons of substituted cyclopentadiene (Cp) unit is particularly pronounced in compounds containing aromatic or heteroaromatic rings. In serine derivative of 3-ferrocenyl- 1-phenylpyrazole-4-carboxaldehyde there is no appearance of splitting of ortho Cp signals probably as a consequence of hydrogen bond formation between hydroxyl and carboxylate group indicating a presence of an alternate conformation with reduced influence of CH2OH moiety on ferrocene scaffold

Introduction Potassium iodine (KI) is used as a drug therapy for treating numerous diseases such as small-vessel vasculitis, erythema nodosum, vasculitis nodularis, Sweet's syndrome, tuberculosis and granulomatosis, and for iodized salt. At the same time, KI can be harmful. Iodine intake may increase the frequency of thyroiditis in humans, and may induce the occurrence of experimental thyroiditis (ET) in animals. Investigations on an experimental model for the examination of thyroiditis in Wistar rats have clearly showed morphological changes in the rat thyroid evoked by KI administration. Objective The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of low and high doses of KI on the thyroid gland of Wistar rats and determine the effect on hormone status (T4, T3 and TSH) in this rat strain. Methods Two groups of rats from the Wistar strain were treated with a low iodine dose (225 μg/g BW) and with a high iodine dose (675 μg/g BW) of KI solutions. Untreated nonimmunized animals served as controls. The solution was administrated daily intraperitoneally during the period of 26 consecutive days. Results Monitoring hormone status (TSH, T3 and T4) and morphological changes it was found that therapeutic doses of KI applied in treatment induced the occurrence of experimental thyroiditis (chronic destructive Hashimoto's thyroiditis in humans) and cell necrosis in animals not carrying a genetic susceptibility. Significant inflammatory changes were observed in rats treated with a high iodine dose. Conclusion The early iodine induced cell necrosis and inflammation in the nonimmunized animals without genetic susceptibility is a new experimental model of thyroiditis.

Introduced measures to deal with COVID-19 pandemic in Serbia affected everyday life of people. Media coverage during the pandemic played a significant role in providing verified information, protecting human health and well-being. In order to gain insight into the reactions of social work students on introduced measures and media coverage about these measures during the state of emergency in Republic of Serbia, an analysis of reflective journals is presented. Eighty reflective journals were analyzed, where students\u27 reactions on introduced measures and media coverage related to these measures are monitored and linked to the electronic archive of the public media service Radio Television of Serbia news. Students\u27 thoughts on several identified measures are presented and analyzed together with their reactions on media coverage about these measures. Findings indicate the important role of the content and ways of media reporting in creation of reflections, as well as the importance of using reflective journals in both education and preservation of mental health. Possible directions of mental health improvement through media coverage in crisis situations and recommendations for education of social workers are presented.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, professionals working in the social protection system are confronted with multiple challenges – due to the health crisis, they are worried not only for the lives of their beneficiaries but for their own families, friends, including their own lives. In order to analyze and understand the changes that the COVID-19 pandemic brought to the social protection system of persons in migration in Serbia, qualitative research with professionals in the system has been conducted. Focus groups with 13 professionals and 7 interviews with key informants were conducted. Results have shown that the COVID-19 pandemic had lightened up the lack of adapting capacities in the social protection system and unpreparedness for situations of crisis – starting from challenges of consistent and equal provision of health protection equipment to lack of competent supervision

In order to respond to the growing needs of migrant families with children, and especially unaccompanied children, who were traveling on the Western Balkan route, social workers and other field workers and child protection officers had to acquire new knowledge and develop specific competencies in a relatively short period of time. Although Serbia is mainly a country of transit, migrant children, who have been staying in Serbia for a longer period of time, have experienced challenges in access to services due to language barriers, overstretched capacities and insufficient coordination. The aim of the paper is to describe and reflect on the process used to develop a design, which ensures migrant children are consulted throughout the process and are the co-creators of a social work curriculum responding to their vulnerabilities. In order to gain insights on the views of children on the move regarding competencies of the workforce in both the government and NGO institutions, a consultation process was introduced with both unaccompanied and accompanied children in Serbia. The methodology of consultations was designed as interactive and safe for children to express their views and experiences. Results indicate that children should be key participants in the co-creation of knowledge in matters that concern them, and it is necessary to develop, test and evaluate the ways in which we can best understand their experiences, points of view and perspectives and incorporate them into knowledge for action

Children in migration on the Balkan route are, in addition to other threaten- ing circumstances, exposed to all basic types (physical, psychological, sexual) and numerous other forms of violence, in the countries of origin and during the journey. This paper discusses the experiences of children in migration on the Balkan route from the point of view of children’s rights. The research results presented are part of a wider project: “Violence against children on the Balkan migration route – solutions through advocacy and research”. The project was developed in cooperation with Save the Children NWB and the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Sarajevo, with the support of the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI)

During an experiment conducted in Serbia, near the city of Sabac over two growing seasons (2012/13 and 2013/14), the yield and quality of grassland treated with an organo-mineral fertilizer (farmyard manure 30 t ha(-1) + 10 wt.% zeolite) was monitored and compared to fertilization with pure manure (30 t ha(-1)), spring nitrogen application (50 kg/ha N), treatment with pure zeolite, and treatment without the addition of fertilizers. All fertilizers were spread in the autumn of 2012. Nitrogen was exceptionally applied in the spring of 2013 and 2014. Dry matter (DM) yield and forage quality were evaluated during the growing season, in two forage harvests. In addition to yields, the chemical composition of the biomass, concentrations of total protein fractions and in vitro DM digestibility were examined in detail. The biomass yields of both cuts in the first season were considerably higher after the application of manure with zeolite, pure manure and mineral nitrogen, compared to the control and zeolite. No significant differences among the treatments were noted with regard to the chemical composition of the biomass, or the effect of the type of fertilization on DM digestibility of the biomass from the natural grassland. The application of the organo-mineral fertilizer considerably reduced the share of NPN in total protein, compared to pure manure

Biopreservation of traditional raw milk cheeses with an emphasis on Serbian artisanal cheeses and their historical production

Cheese is one of the oldest food products with preservation based on fermentation, the most common and perhaps the oldest biotechnology. It relies on the biochemical action of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and is regarded as health-friendly by consumers. Some autochthonous LAB, worldwide and in Serbia, have been characterized as effective producers of antimicrobial compounds such as low-molecular-weight metabolites, hydrogen peroxide, bacteriocins, and bacteriocin-like molecules, and so have demonstrated great potential as food preservatives . The raw milk cheese microbiota, as a good source of novel bacteriocinogenic LAB with high diversity of microbial activity, is key in controlling the microbial load in cheese and achieving diverse sensory characteristics
